FUTURE TENSE

French 3 Notes

In French, the future tense is a SIMPLE verb (one part to the verb)/To make a regular verb into future tense, keep the ENTIRE verbinfinitive, (drop the -e from an -re verb) and add these avoir endings:

Future Tense

EX: I will walk the dog after dinner:Je promener le chien apres le diner.

Je – ai nous - ons

Tu – as vous - ez

Il/elle/on – a ils/elles - ont

ai

In English, we would translate future tense as "will do something"

Je finirai - I will finishTu demanderas - You will askNous repondrons - We will answer

*If you look up the word "will" in the dictionary in an attemptto translate future tense, you will find "testament" or"volontiers" - remember that will is built into the future tense verb!

Irregulars:

For these irregular verbs, you must memorize the future stemsand then add the appropriate endings:

Avoir – aur- Savoir – saur-

Etre – ser- Devoir – devr-

Aller – ir- Venir – viendr-

Faire – fer- Mourir – mourr-

Voir – verr- Envoyer – enverr-

Pouvoir – pourr- Pleuvoir – il pleuvra

Courir – courr- Falloir – il faudra

Vouloir – voudr-

Spelling Changes:

These spelling changes occur in ALL subject forms, not just the boot.

Mute -e verbs: add an accent grave to the e (e)tu acheteras

-YER verbs - change the y to i

nous paierons

appeler and jeter - double the final consonant
