Pastor’s Poetry Post-It January 1, 2016

Happy New Year to everyone! I’ll give you today two poetic prayers to start off the New Year right. One is by the famous Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of many wise and insightful books. The other is by the Dalai Lama. Both come from religious traditions distinct from ours, but whose deepest thoughts and desires are not so different. Would that in this New Year, all of us, who believe and look beyond this year in hope, would work together for peace and prosperity for all.

Father Hugh, OP

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! The Music Ministry of Holy Innocents, extends to all of you our warmest wishes for a Happy and Healthy 2017! We look forward to a year filled with wonderful things and the opportunity to continue to share the blessings of our faith with all of you! We appreciate your participation as we continue to sing the beautiful songs of the Christmas season that will be used in the next few weeks during our parish liturgies. The Junior, Teen, and Adult Choirs of Holy Innocents, as well as all of our parish musicians wish you a very Happy New Year!

“A Prayer for the World”

Let the rain come and wash away

the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds

held and nurtured over generations.

Let the rain wash away

the memory of the hurt, the neglect.

Then let the sun come out

and fill the sky with rainbows.

Let the warmth of the sun heal us

wherever we are broken.

Let it burn away the fog so that

we can see each other clearly.

Let the warmth and brightness of the sun

melt our selfishness.

And let the light of the sun be so strong

that we will see all people as neighbors.

Let the earth, nourished by rain,

bring forth flowers

to surround us with beauty.

And let the mountains teach our hearts

to reach upward to heaven.

Amen.

Rabbi Harold Kushner

“A Daily Prayer of the Dalai Lama”

May we become at all times, both now

and forever:

A protector of those without protection,

A guide for those who have lost their way,

A ship for those with oceans to cross,

A bridge for those with rivers to cross,

A sanctuary for those in danger, a lamp for

those without alight,

A place of refuge for those who lack shelter,

and a servant to all in need.

On New Year’s day, the octave of Christmas, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God, the divine and virginal motherhood of the Blessed Virgin. This feast is the celebration of Mary’s motherhood of Jesus and is the oldest feast of Mary celebrated by the Catholic church. Let our prayer for the New Year be…….

Mary, Mother of God

Heavenly Father, You blessed the Virgin Mary with the fullness of grace. She is my model of faith, hope and love. I give this new year to her intercession and ask for her holy prayers. Place my needs into the protection of her motherly love. With her help, I want my faith to grow. Give me an increase in the virtue of hope when troubles tempt me to despair. Guide me in understanding Your infinite love. And join my heart, dear Lord, to the Holy Mother’s Immaculate Heart, so that I may improve in loving everyone unconditionally in imitation of my Savior, Jesus. Amen Maria Lamorgese, Director ph 914-769-3297 [email protected] Classes will resume on Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

SOLEMNITY OF MARY, THE HOLY MOTHER OF GOD

First Reading: Numbers 6:22-27: The Lord told Aaron to bestow his blessings on the Israelites. God wanted them to know that by invoking his name they would be blessed by him. Second Reading: Galatians 4:4-7: Paul describes how through Jesus' birth, we have been delivered from the laws that exiled Gentiles from God's community. Through Jesus, the Gentiles became God's adopted ones and would receive the same blessings that the Jewish converts had been promised. Gospel: Luke 2:16-21: The shepherds went to Bethlehem to see Jesus and immediately understood all that they had been told about him. They praised God for what they had seen, and Jesus was given the name that the angel had chosen for him.
