Vacation Planning/Attending Mass

Now that the vacation season is here, families

who want to make sure they can attend Mass

wherever they’re visiting are encouraged to

check out a very helpful website,

www.masstimes.org. It lists Sunday and daily Mass sched-

ules for parishes throughout the United States and Canada.

And it gives directions to each church.

There will be an American Red Cross Blood Drive at Holy

Martyrs on Friday, August 21, 2015 from 3:00-7:00 pm in

Martyrs Hall. Park in the

rear lot.

Please give the

gift of life.

An Invitation

In less than a month our choir will resume

rehearsals and singing weekly at the

9:30am Mass. Have you ever considered

becoming a member of our choir, or could

you share your musical talent as a song

leader or instrumentalist at any of the

weekend Masses? We are looking for new (and returning)

singers and instrumentalists to participate in and enhance

our music ministry. Prior musical experience is a plus but is

not a requirement. All that is needed is a desire to learn and

an enthusiasm to elevate our communal prayer at Mass

through music. The choir will be hosting a picnic at the

pavilion on the parish grounds on Sunday, August 30

from 1:00-4:00 pm. All current and former choir mem-

bers, as well as those interested in joining the choir are

invited to attend. For more information feel free to contact

our Music Director, Jason Falkofsky at 216-548-4898 or

[email protected].

The Catholic Ministry to the Incarcerated is looking

for creative, friendly, compassionate people to make a dif-

ference in the lives of local inmates and their families. If you

are interested in the plight of families while a member is

incarcerated and/or the reintegration of the inmate into

society upon his release, you are needed. Projects may be

started that include opening emergency housing facilities,

helping inmates find jobs, getting Christmas presents to

inmates’ children, and developing a community helps pack-

et for men and women upon their release. For more infor-

mation, join us in the basement meeting room of St. Francis

Xavier Parish in Medina on Monday, August 10 at 7:00 pm

to see how you might help. Sister Rita Mary Harwood and

Father Tom Kowatch will facilitate the meeting. Several par-

ishes share in this ministry. Contact Holy Martyrs’ parishion-

ers Bob & Kathy Meyer at 330-721-7540 for more infor-

mation.

Reflection from parishioner Jennifer Mihalus

I had the wonderful opportunity to serve for a second time at the La Sagrada Familia Friendship Meal on July 11th

. First, let

me start with a little background.

When I served the first time in March of this year, I had not heard of La Sagrada before. I typed the address into my trusty GPS

and off I went. I knew I was headed into the heart of Cleveland, but I wasn’t sure exactly where.

As I made my way along through the neighborhoods, something felt very familiar. I have previously experienced deja vu, but

this one was different. As I turned onto Detroit Ave., the feeling was more intense. I looked up at the side street signs: West

83rd, West 82nd……then I saw it: West 81st. Yes! West 81st

and Detroit! Of course! The house I remember from my child-

hood! My earliest memories of my life were there. It had been about 45 years since I saw this neighborhood. Yes, there were

changes, new buildings, old buildings gone, but the neighborhood feel was still there. Older now, like me, but standing the

test of time.

Both times at La Sagrada were spent in the kitchen plating food. I felt so very good about serving, even feeling very proud of

myself. After things had quieted down, I took the opportunity to step out of the kitchen. What I didn’t know was when I

walked out into the hall, I would experience something very different.

I expected to see people of all races, age, levels of income, some sad, some happy. But what struck me the most was looking

at their faces, some into their eyes.

I have always been a person who wants to fix things, make it right and a person who feels that every problem should have a

solution, we just need to work hard to find it. But how do I alone do something about this? Is what I’m doing enough?

And when I saw the children, I couldn’t help but wonder if this was their first real meal in some time. “Where do you live?” I

wondered. “What will you do tomorrow, let alone what is in your future?”

I was once a child in this neighborhood and moved away at age 5 with my family. I always had a roof over my head, loving

family, food to eat, clothes to wear. I’ve done pretty well in my life. How can I help these kids have that too?

It was then I realized the pride I felt earlier was replaced with humility, compassion and, yes, a feeling of love & peace. This is

where I belong, giving back to a neighborhood where I resided long ago. I want to be part of the solution.

The past few years of my life, I have been doing a lot of soul-searching. I felt I was being called towards something I could

not quite put my finger on. But now I have found it. My life has come back home to God. Through Him and with Him, along

with prayer and patience, I am starting to discover where that call is leading me.

But, I alone cannot do it all. I call on others to search their hearts, their souls. Ask yourself, what can I do? It can be anything

from contributing food or clothes, to preparing meals, to serving meals and so much more. Every contribution matters; every

life matters.

La Sagrada Familia means The Sacred Family. We are all God’s Sacred Family. Find it in your heart to reach out and make a

difference in someone’s life. I know it changed mine.

Got Religion?

Part l ‘Breaking Down the Research’*

Ask Charlie Brown’s friend, Linus, what happiness is, and his answer is simple-“A blanket!” If he is right, we would all be

experiencing Nirvana! But we all know that his security blanket is a metaphor for something greater. Numerous sociological

studies have shown that having religion and regularly practicing it can bring us the lasting happiness associated with a

stable and satisfying married life, as well as a stable home life for our children.

Studies concur that faith helps families get through difficult times together, guides them with the moral compass needed

to make sound decisions in an often confusing world, and further helps families maintain their commitment to these deci-

sions.

If the results of the research seem exaggerated, if the association of practicing faith with having a stable home life seems

overstated, then we might do well to consider the words of Jesus, “For I assure you, if you have faith the size of a mustard

seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.” Matt

17:20. Imagine what a family that practices faith can do?!

In Part II of next week’s bulletin, we will further break down the faith-family connection, as it significantly enriches both

the mother-child relationship and the father-child relationship. Who needs Dr. Phil?!!
