Drifting, a variation on the theme of the still life, is the first solo exhibition presented by Maya-Inès Touam, the sixth winner of the Lcc Program.
Throughout history, though qualified as minor, this Western artistic genre has born witness to its time, interrogated its symbols, and revealed its consumption habits. Natural elements or artefacts anchor the composition in which they figure, in an identifiable temporality and geography. As if to seek her own geography, the young artist proposes her Drifting series as a personal reinterpretation of synthetic Western-issued codes through a study of the drapery, North African feminine ornaments, and pan-African attributes.
Through the process of staging certain cultural allusions , Maya - Inès questions the predominance and value accorded to objects , thus deconstructing their symbolic power . Like Wax - the fabric associated in the collective consciousness with sub-Saharan dress codes, but which was in fact originally manufactured in Holland for the Javanese market – the artist explores the connection to
representations as well as notions of consumption and accumulation, the sacrality that defines certain objects, and how they stimulate the historical imagination.
Making use of the various presentation modes explored during her Lcc Program residence, Maya-Inès Touam confronts a heritage customarily associated with folkloric representation, and renders it visible through compositions that abandon defined thematic groupings, relying instead upon a delicate aesthetic equilibrium.

Born in 1988 in ParisLives and works between Paris and Algiers
Maya-Inès Touam, a recent graduate of the Beaux-Arts of Paris, is interested in the ambivalent portrayal of women in the Arab world. Born in France to Algerian parents, her own path has been largely defined by this question of identity. Her work, over the past four years, has articulated around a certain feminine imagery of contemporary Islam, in the line of artists such as Zineb Sedira, Shadi Gadirian, Maïmouna P. Guerresi, or the dancer Héla Fattoumi.Through her experiences travelling through MENA countries as well as through various artistic mediums, she questions the femininity associated with an Orient exposed to occidental codes of interpretation, notably in the context of her thesis work series Révéler l’étoffe (Revealing Material). Since 2017 she has turned her focus to the genre of the still life. Her artistic projects are born of a vision that is realized through research into iconography , semantics , and symbolism, bringing to life carefully precise and balanced compositions. Maya-Inès Touam has presented her photographs in group exhibitions in the United States, Europe, and North Africa,
in tandem with Thomas Echegut, a photography technician trained by Marc Pataut and Patrick Feigenbaum. For her first solo exhibition, Maya-Inès Touam joins the Lcc Program in revisiting the still life ; shattering its codes without extracting any symbolic burden. She also questions conveyed cultural representations of both East and West through the staging of contemporary ordinary objects from daily life.

Launched in 2013, La Chambre Claire is a bi-annual award supporting emerging African photography through the promotion and exhibition of an emerging artist. Through this innovative program, Fondation Alliances wishes to give a concrete impetus to the young creative photography through a consistent cultural patronage policy, as part of an alternative approach to that of the art market. Since 2013, Fondation Alliances has chosen to provide support to emerging photographers, enabling them to produce their first solo exhibition and meet with the public. On the occasion of its fifth edition, La Chambre Claire has changed its name to Lcc Program, providing optimized visibility for the award winners, the special mention recipients, as well as all participants. In addition to the production of a first solo exhibition, the Lcc Program supports individual award winners in the evolution of their creative approach, providing the means necessary to pre-sent, develop, and disseminate their visual expression. Every winning candidate thus enjoys personalized assistance from the foundation team. In order to fully perform the role of a springboard platform, the Lcc team solicits assistance
from contemporary art professionals. During its sixthedition, the Lcc Program participated in the Rencontres de Bamako, solicited and received nearly 200 candidatures of emerging artists from across the African continent and the diaspora, and formed a new Jury. In partnership with The Ultra Laboratory (TUL) artist residency, founded in Casablanca by artist Rita Alaoui, sixth edition winner Maya-Inès Touam expanded her Ready Made series with new photographic compositions. These images are exclusively presented in her solo exhibition produced by the Lcc Program.
