Dn O'ut "Time

In September 1940, one hundred and thirty-three bewildered and excited

newcomers arrived at Watertown High School. Each carried with him a

bit of information which had accumulated over eight years in grammar school,

but the high and mighty upper classmen seemed so much wiser that the

youngest members of W.H.S. felt rather insignificant for the first month or

two. It wasn't long however, before the one hundred and thirty-three Fresh-

men were acquainted with each other — and in November they assembled

to pool opinions as to who should "take the wheel" of the class of '44 and

start it on the straight and narrow path this first year of the trek through

W.H.S. President, Muriel Andrews, was chosen with Vice President, Fred

Black, as right hand man. Accounts were to be balanced by Treasurer,

Harold Brew, and Secretary, Shirley Laneville kept a record of the progress

the class of 1944 made during 1940. Shall we take a peek at that record?

Saint Patricks Day, March 1940.

Tonight we Freshmen had our first taste of social life and found it quite

intoxicating. The "green" ice cream matched the shamrock decorations. The

program of entertainment "revealed" singers and dancers and everyone

enjoyed the relay races and dancing.

Exam Season 1941.

It was very exciting to take real exams and we Freshmen seemed espe-

cially anxious to pass them—we might change our names then—Sophomores!

After summer vacation the class of '44 reentered W.H.S. This time, with

the same excitement but no longer bewildered. Perhaps the title, Sopho-

mores, gave them self confidence. The record continued—

November 1941.

Class elections chose President Albert Podzunas, Vice President Fred

Black, reelected right hand man, and Kay Kantor, Treasurer.

Respectfully submitted,

Helen Kontout, Secretary.

Spring 1942.

This Spring the Sophomore's fancy turned to thoughts of a party and itwas fun although all of the class members did not attend. (Incidentally, ourone hundred and thirty-three has decreased.)

After another "exam session" and two months of summer vacation theClass of '44 found itself crowding the top men (Class of '43) and as Juniors itsmembers really got down to work. After Class elections, in which there werefew changes made, President Albert Podzunas was reelected, Fred Black,Vice President for the third time, Secretary, Barbara Tyler, and Treasurer,Irene Fufliese, committees were drawn up and the wheels of progress wereput into motion once again.

Ring Committee Report

Because of a shortage of material due to the war there were many rumorsto the effect that the fingers of the Class of '44 would not bear evidence oftheir alma mater, but Arlene Smalley as chairman of the committee finallybrought forth ring samples and the rumors were hushed.

Milk Committee Report

At last it was forty-four's turn to take over the milk business. The moneypoured into the Junior treasury as Helen Kontout, Irene Fugliese, Helen Pen-oncello and the rest of the committee increased the sales. The Prom com-mittee found the funds sufficient to make the Junior Prom extra special!

Prom Committee Report

Dancing tomatoes, carrots, celery, squash, cabbage, etc., decorated thewalls of the Gym and prom chairman Muriel Andrews' seven foot Uncle Samstood at the door directing the promenaders into the hall. A gigantic V forvictory and red, white, and blue balloons all carried out the patriotic theme.Because we were "rich" Cliff Slater and his orchestra were not too expensivefor us and the Juniors bade the Seniors a royal farewell.

So our Junior year passed and the seventy-one members of the Class

of 1944 suddenly realized that the year to follow would be theirs—1944.

The last officers were elected in the fall. John D. McGowan was chosen

president and Helen Kontout, Vice President. Irene Fugliese, our capable

treasurer, was reelected and Mary Zwanch, Secretary, recorded the final

year as follows:

March 24, 1944.

"Don't Take My Penny" was presented tonight and the gym was filled

to capacity (and then some). The class took in a number of pennies on the

performance—one-hundred and seventy-five to be exact. Thus the treasury

again swelled.

June 14, 1944.

Commencement! Caps and gowns, diplomas, speeches—at last these

were the experience of the Class of '44.

June 16, 1944.

The Senior Prom! The "man shortage" was of vital concern to the fairladies of W.H.S. but some of them were especially thrilled (and lucky) tohave uniformed escorts. Each Senior danced the night away but made themost of its every moment—they were the last to be had as students ofWatertown High.

As alumni we shall be proud of Watertown High and ever grateful forhappy memories of the four years we spent there.

The colorful comedy "Don't Take My Penny" was presented on March

twenty-fourth. The audience enjoyed stage struck Penny (Helen Kontout) as

she recited Shakespeare to the disgust of her boy-friend, Carey, played by

Fred Black, who donned mustache and wig in an attempt to bring her to

her senses.

In silk stockings and long curls Martin Kopp was a lovely Gloria Lovely.

The cleverest remark or at least the one which brought the most laughs

of the performance, was an accident. Carmella Guerrera, in shouting about

her chicken's first egg, instead of exclaiming, "Nellie laid an egg", credited

Penny with the accomplishment.

Our school squad was composed solely of new members, those whohad never been "varsity" before. They started off with a record of six straightvictories; then lost regularly until the last game, which was a glorious end-ing. Although the team had a period of bad luck, it was highly respectedand admired by all the "Watertownites." The schedule was as follows:

"Thespians Troupe No. 423 presents- Familiar words, those, to allwho followed the Saturday afternoon broadcasts of the W.H.S. Victory Players.

Troupe No. 423 tried a little of just about everything this year, from radiobroadcasts to writing musical comedies. The season began when Thespians,Elma Beach, President, Muriel Andrews, Secretary, Donald Miller, PeterShatzki, Fred Black, Jack McGowan, Janet Snyder, Jack Hoffman and WaltMcGowan decided to write the A.A. Show which was given on November18th. Karl Koslosky and Don Flynn became eligible to join the Troupe, as aresult of their good work in this show.

In March and April some members found themselves dashing in threedirections as rehearsals were being held simultaneously for radio broad-casts, the Dramatic Club presentation "Stage Door" and the competitive play"Vengence Height."

Mr. Cavallaro's untiring efforts to make W.H.S. vocalists realize their

talents and to show them what pleasure may be derived from singing with

a Glee Club, finally have begun to bear fruit. The choir is the largest in

years—rehearsals have been held Wednesdays during school hours— "spe-

cial" period!

The Glee Club sang many patriotic numbers at the Armistice Day

assembly—some were accompanied by the orchestra.

May twelfth the music organizations had "their" night. Mr. Cavallaro

selected many difficult and very beautiful compositions for the Spring Concert

and the program was spiced with delightful novelty tunes.

Although none of the W.H.S. "musicians" particularly liked the idea of

getting to school at seven-thirty on Friday mornings (some came early Tues-

days, as well) most of the members were faithful and the orchestra played

for assembly programs on Armistice Day and at Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Their first public appearance was made the night of the Senior Play.

That performance enabled the members to get in shape for the big event—

the Spring Concert which is scheduled for May Twelfth. If the seven-thirty

rehearsals continue to be successful we may look forward to a super-per-

formance.

The demand for a revival of "Inkspots" was voiced and on February 18,

at a special meeting it was definitely decided to bring forth another and

greatly improved edition. Officers and staff for the remainder of the year

were chosen so that they would be able to carry on next fall. Peter Morell

was elected editor-in-chief with Donald Miller associate editor.

Other officers included Lewis Payne—news editor; Robert Weidgenant—

sports editor; Teresa Capolupo—feature editor; Raymond Ellis—Paige Bass-

ford—and Ann Judd—circulation editors, and Robert McGough—advertising

manager.

The first edition was sold almost before the ink was dry. The staff voted

to send copies of future "Inkspots" to alumni in the armed forces.

This year, the student council representatives, willing and eager, not onlymade many ambitious plans, but carried them through. Miss Barrett andMiss MacKerracker, the faculty advisors, deserve a round of applause fortheir unceasing work with the council.

The point system which was introduced two years ago, was abolished be-cause it did not affect enough students to make it necessary.

The hum of a thriving "business" could be heard each Thursday morn-ing when War Stamps and Bonds were sold in each Home Room. Rememberthe day someone bought a $1,000 one, Miss Barrett?—The banner made therounds as each room rallied to ring up the largest total, and the stars andflags on a poster gave credit to rooms going 100% weekly.

Easter Stamps and money for the Infantile Paralysis and Red Cross driveswere handled by the Student Council Representatives.

The Council leaves one of its biggest undertakings unfinished—the com-pilation of a record of W.H.S. alumni who have distinguished themselves inthe scholastic, athletic or battle fields.

Mr. Harrison suggests to the Student Council that Teen Age Dances beheld in the lower hall of the Community Building. A committee was selectedand a number of Watertown and Oakville young people turned out toseveral dances.

The record of this year's Student Council should be a constant reminderto all W.H.S. students that there are many achievements possible when eachdoes his best.

WillWe the Class of 1944 bequeath to

the on-coming lower and upperclassmen the prizes we so greatlytreasured during our stay at Water-town High School—

To Mrs. Moberg we leave an au-tomatic heater for Room 4 which willchange with the weather — so thatshe will not need to keep her coaton during class.

To Mrs. Bronson we leave a bottleof crimson finger nail polish and apackage of artificial finger nails.

To Mr. Robert Cook we leave adeferment so that the succeedingseniors may appreciate his Eco-nomics class.

To Mr. Baker we leave a class ofprim, polite, and perfect pupils whoneed no discipline, so that he mayspend all his time teaching them.

We leave an adding machine toMiss Barrett so that her mind won'tswim with dollars and cents onstamp days.

To Mr. Fontane we leave a limo-sine, so that he'll have room enoughto collect the teachers who "bum"rides.

Because Mr. Bartlett's satchel mayfall apart any day we leave him anew one, and since his car is in thesame condition we think he shouldhave a jeep.

To Mr. Cavallaro we leave loadsof good musicians and Glee Club-bers to make up for those going out.

The seniors leave the best of luckand countless hours of future hap-piness to Miss Marshall.

To Mr. Swift and Mr. Cook weleave unbreakable panes for the of-fice doors that uninvited guests maynot intrude.

We leave to Mr. Chrisman somewilling fellow who will run after histools which are seldom returned.

The Senior class leaves its abilityto produce an extraordinarily profit-able play to next year's class.

Barbara Butterfield leaves herability to referee to Jackie Starry.

Mary Russell's second wind tocatch a bus from Oakville is left toall the "tail enders".

Don Miller and Don Flynn leavetheir experience as stage managersto Bill Rice.

We leave the six Senior cars toHorace Gibson in the hope that hemay get enough parts to make onegood one.

"Dot" Mangini leaves her argu-mentative nature to Bob Weidgenont.(Not that he needs it!!)

We leave Fred Black's ability toplay the French horn to little BillyLeach.

To the class of 1945 we leave someboys!!!!!

"Meme" Andrews leaves her ex-ecutive ability to her sister "Twin",and her red hair to Ginger Copes.

Helen Kontout leaves her loquaci-ousness to Marion Connelly.

To all the faculty we leave GeorgeWildman, with the hope that he willcontinue some of the theoreticalarguments maintained by Don Mil-ler.

"Renee" Fugliese leaves hertresses to Alice Miller.

We leave Johnny Zwanch and BobMichauds' jazz ties to Walt Mc-Gowan.

"Ellie" Andrews leaves her mem-ory to "Chy", hoping she'll use itwhere her lunch is concerned.

Fred Black leaves the tights whichbecame so attached to him, throughhis work in dramatics, to any under-classman who feels disposed to highflying.

To all future seniors of W.H.S. weleave fair warning—start your Eng-lish Author reports early!!!!!

To this will and testament we setour hand and seal on this first dayof April, Anno Domine, 1944.
