CANADIAN NATIONAL CN Locomotives retired since last issue:

DM&IR SD40-3 410 on April 22nd

ANY GP9RM 4005 on April 25th

BCOL RS18CAT 629 on May 3rd (This is the very last RS18CAT (2075 HP) on the CN roster.

ATHABASKA NORTHERN GP9RM’s 4005 and 4006 arrived at Woodcrest, April 2008 and both will likely be retired. They were transferred into CN ownership last month.

CN has sold the following 32 retired units to PROGRESS RAIL (PRLX), and in late April were forwarding them from CN-Woodcrest, IL to PRLX-Waresboro, GA for storage: DM&IR SD38-2 209, DM&IR SD40-3 418, CN GMD1m’s 1417, 1431 CN SD38-2 1651 WC GP40 3005 CN GP9RM’s 4012, 4014, 4109, 4117 GTW GP9R’s 4615, 4617, 4627, 4631 CN SD40-2W’s 5243, 5255, 5282, 5333, 5344 CN SD40-2’s 5372, 5375, 5376, 5383 CN GP9RM’s 7003, 7048, 7079, 7205 CN GP40-2LW’s 9493, 9619 CN GP40-2W’s 9669, 9670

The CN surplus & retired locomotives sale ended April 8th -- Updated! BCOL RS18CATm’s 607 and 610 (See paragraph below) BCOL SD40-2 758 CN GP9RM 4014 (Sold to PROGRESS RAIL in April) CN SD40-2’s 5259, 5285, 5364, 5365, 5371, 5374, 5382 and 5387 DMIR SD38AC’s 202 and 203 DMIR SD38-2 206 DMIR SD40-3 416 DMIR SD38AC 869 GTW GP38AC’s 4997 and 4998 (See paragraph below) WC SD35Q 2500 CN SD50F’s 5413, 5420, 5421, 5422, 5442, 5446, 5447 and 5456.

In early May CN scrapped former BC RAIL RS18m(CAT) 607 and 610 at Woodcrest shop, and are two of the units in the auction sale. As well, GTW GP38 4998 (from the above sale) arrived in Tacsheraeau Yard, Montreal in the second week of May. It is suspected this unit will be used to donate parts to other active CN GP38-2’s.

Distributed Power trains have been in operation across the Canadian Prairies since April 2008. Most CN locomotive engineers across the prairies have completed their 1-day classroom training on the operation of Distributed Power. Several On-The-Job Trainers (OJTs) at each terminal are in place to ride along with the engineers for their first trip. After that, they are considered qualified to operate trains with distributed power. All CN locomotives numbered 22XX and 88XX are capable of operating in DP mode. There are a few older CN locomotives

Page 3: Revised 06/03/08

that have been modified and some of the former BC RAIL Locomotives are DP ready. For now, the most common train to operate with Distributed Power eastbound has been train 346, which is assembled as a DP train at Edmonton. Train 346 typically hauls lumber destined for the Chicago area. Occasionally, some of the other 300-series trains operate with DP. After CN locomotive engineers are fully qualified, more DP trains will be seen running both east and west across the Canadian Prairies on the CN mainline. DP will be used on the larger, heavier 300-series trains and some larger grain trains. Train 346 is running about 21,000 tons with DP power and 8500-11,000ft. DP is expected to allow longer, heavier trains with fewer train separations due to in-train forces. During extreme cold, DP trains should help maintain brake pipe pressures and reduce problems associated with long trains and cold temperatures. You will always see the DP unit about 2/3rds of the way back. If it is placed at the wrong location, there is greater potential for the train to be ripped apart due to in-train forces. One train left Edmonton with the DP train marshalled backwards. The DP unit was placed 1/3 back instead of 2/3rds. This train ripped apart after leaving Edmonton before the marshalling error was noticed. Once put together, operating these trains is not much different than operating any other train. Whatever is done on the lead locomotive is sent back via radio signals to the DP unit. The air pressure in the brake pipe is monitored by the remote DP unit and can be used as a back-up communication method to idle the DP unit should the radio link fail. The DP locomotives have two screens. These screens replace the standard gauges found on older generation locomotives. One screen is set up to control and monitor the leading consist and the other is set up to control and monitor the remote consists. If setting out or picking up cars enroute. There is a procedure that must be done to put the DP unit to "sleep" if it is to stay in place while cars are added in front of it. When initially building the consist of a DP train, there are several tests that must be done to ensure proper operation and communication between the locomotives. CP rail has had many years of experience with DP. CN Rail has some catching up to do to learn the best ways to use this technology. The technology supports several remote consists, but for now it is unlikely you will ever see more than one remote consist.

CN GP38-2 5854 was repainted into CN’s current scheme, March 7, 2008. Ken Lanovich photographed IC GP38-2 9562 at Woodcrest shop March 22, 2008 which had been recently repainted at the NRE facility in Capreol, Ontario. http://csxchicago.gotdns.com:6003/CN_Trains/Roll77%2678/0015822-R1-002-00A.jpg GRAND TRUNK WESTERN GP40-2 6420 is the last left on the CN roster in the GTW blue and orange paint scheme. GTW SD40-2 5934 is still looking great after being painted 15 years ago. This was one of the last units painted at Battle Creek shop in the CN North America scheme. Battle Creek used high quality, automotive paint on the units in the CNNA scheme, and it was well worth the extra cost. March 28, 2008. Ken Lanovich also clicked CN-liveried GTW GP38-2 5854 at Markham yard on March 28, 2008. Here are photos of the three different GTW units: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=158324 GTW 6420 http://csxchicago.gotdns.com:6003/CN_Trains/Roll77%2678/0015822-R1-012-4A.jpg 5934 http://csxchicago.gotdns.com:6003/CN_Trains/Roll77%2678/0015822-R1-014-5A.jpg 5854

Tim Stevens reported there are now two CN liveried engines numbered '6017' operating on the CN roster. CNNA SD40u 6017 and now IC SD40A-2R 6017. These EMD units were built on SDP45 frames, and this is the first IC 6000-series to be repainted. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=233922&nseq=554 Former CN GMD1m 1432 sold to Rail & Motor (RIMX), at Woodcrest April 5, 2008. http://csxchicago.gotdns.com:6003/CN_Trains/Roll77%2678/0015822-R1-028-12A.jpg

Joe Zika’s CN MacMillan Yard Report: Motive Power: Not much new in the last few weeks of April at work, There has been a noticeable increase of run-through Union Pacific power from Chicago to Toronto, there is also a more noticeable presence of BC Rail and Illinois Central power in and out of Toronto of late as well, probably a balancing act seeing as more of the new ES44DC's and SD 70M-2's have been roaming out west and down south. Included below are a few pictures of units that were in Toronto in April and May. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/4651.jpg BC RAIL C44-9W http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/4652.jpg BC RAIL C44-9W http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/9629.jpg IC GP38-2 http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/2102.jpg ONRAIL SD75I http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/7274.jpg CN GP9RM http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/7248.jpg CN GP9RM http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/5379.jpg CN SD40-2

From last month’s CRO report: Two updates: CN GP38-2 7515 has ended up in Capreol, as you may recall she was missing her front pilot. HCRY 3802 a GP 40-3 was waybilled from the Quebec & Gatineau Rlwy in Allenby, QC to American Motive Power in Dansville NY. We all did a bit of digging and have come to the conclusion that she started as a Ex PC/CR GP 40.

HLCX 3876 arrived in town ex-Proviso, IL and there was no waybill on her in the system as she was shown on the journal as a dead unit, however the car report shows to CBC via/at Riviere du Loup, I have heard that she may be going to Baie Comeau. Note the interesting Fuel tank, definitely a aftermarket retrofit, possibly a cut down FP 45 fuel tank - note the cut in step on the Conductor's side. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/3876.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/3876-2.jpg

For you freight car aficionados: There was a string of brand new 3 Bay hopper cars in the FURX 912000 series numbers waybilled from National Steel Car in Hamilton, ON to Whitecourt, AB. The Consignee is First Union Rail. Also caught a HTTX flat loaded with a new Liebherr Mammoet crane. It is destined he was destined to a construction dealer in Edmonton. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/912593.jpg FURX http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/93032.jpg HTTX

IC GP38-2 9629 has arrived at NRE-Capreol for electrical work and upgrades. I was brought from Illimois dead and tagged Non-Compliant and is one of several IC GP38-2’s being overhauled at NRE in Capreol, Ontario. An odd pairing of EMD power for this Union Pacific Springfield, IL work train: Brand new KCS SD70ACe 4046 and CN/IC GP38-2 9603. The train is heading south from Ridgely Yard to its morning worksite. On the left is a string of new concrete ties ready to be installed during the maintenance blitz planned for mid-June 2008. The wig-wags were installed between 1910 and 1940 said Transport Canada spokeswoman Tina Bouchard. “So we’re talking about pretty old technology,” she said. “Almost a 100 years old in some cases.” The working wig-wags are situated on Morris Line and Gleeson Line, east of Tilbury on CN’s CASO Subdivision. Bouchard said they would possibly be replaced sometime in 2009 as part of Transport Canada’s grade crossing improvement program.. Binder said Transport Canada intends to

CANADIAN PACIFIC CP Locomotives Retired since last issue: Nil Raymond L. Kennedy spotted our typo in “CP locomotives retired” last month: CP retired SD40-2 5635, should read 5625. Following the sale of retired SD40-2’s 5655, 5656, and 5834 to TRACOMEX in Winnipeg for their eventual scrapping at the CEMR Shop, CP has now sold an additional unit. CP 5669 has now already been moved to Winnipeg to join the others waiting for the cutting torch. CP and BNSF tested new Rail-Mate cars in April. In some ways similar to “Road-Railer’s”, “Rail-Mate” is a new innovative bi-modal transportation solution that recently tested on CP hauling select aggregate from Minnesota's Mesabi Iron Range for delivery to MNROAD, Minnesota Department of Transportation' s (MNDOT) cold weather pavement testing facility located near Albertville, MN. The railroad ballast-sized aggregate will be used as a foundation for a pavement test segment at MNROAD. The two-week transportation delivery system test, in conjunction with CP occurred from April 21 to May 3, 2008. RailMate units were placed on the rails at CP Hopkins Spur in Hopkins, MN. The TWIN CITIES & WESTERN Railroad (TC&W) moved the RailMate consist to the CP St. Paul Pigs Eye Yard, St. Paul, MN, and to Superior, WI. Jeff Foster Trucking, Inc., Superior, WI, provided tractors and experienced drivers moved Rail Mate trailers on and off the rail spur located at the CP Stinson Yard, Superior, WI. RailMate bogies were parked and RailMate trailers were then driven to the UnitedTaconite Mine, managed by Cleveland Cliffs, in Eveleth, MN, the heart of Minnesota's Mesabi Iron

Range, where Laurentian Aggregate loaded the aggregate material. This is a photo of the actual CP “Rail-Mate” train heading south over the BNSF Hinckley Sub, and others. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=232778&nseq=15http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=232781&skip=-2 http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=232780&nseq=70 Wrecked CP AC4400CW 9554 is seen here at CP’s LaCrescent Yard in Minnesota, on April 27th 2008. This unit on November 3rd, 2007 train CP 291 ran through a signal at River Junction on the CP Tomah Subdivision and side-swiped the end of the IC&E MSPKC train that was making a pick-up at LaCrescent, MN. The collision caused the CP 9554 to tip over onto the engineers side blocking the mainline. The CP has finally pulled the CP 9554 out of the yard at LaCrescent and loaded it on a flat car for what may be its final trip . Note: This is the same flat car, QTTX 131342 that wrecked CP 8814 rode on last month from Calgary to Relco's shop in Albia, IA. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=233289&nseq=78 Cor van Steenis had rare access to the CP Steam Shop at Ogden on April 29th, the home of CPR 4-6-4 Hudson #2816! The shop also houses the new shop switcher* CP FP9Au 1401. (see the 1401 update below and the attached photos). CPR 2816 with the Empress consist in tow left Calgary on May 3rd, for its shakedown steam run for the summer season hauling CP employees as the passengers. The engine moved from its shop at Ogden to Alyth, Calgary, turned on the wye, then ran east on the mainline through Shepard and Indus to Carseland West (all on the Brooks Subdivision), and then later returned that afternoon to Calgary after being turned on the wye at Carseland. The Empress then operated under steam from Calgary to Edmonton, AB on May 9th. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/2816-10.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/2816-11.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/2816-12.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/1401-11.jpg Cor van Steenis then caught CP Train 28B on May 9th at Olds, Alberta (56 miles north of Calgary on the Red Deer Sub.) with CPR Hudson 2816 and FP9A 1401 with the Empress Train on the 'Alberta Heartland' Charter from Calgary to Edmonton; it returns on Monday, 12 May 2008. Corr correctly pointed out they are now using CP 1401 for more than just Steam Shop switching duty, as this is the second weekend in a row that it was out on an excursion run! (See the paragraphs below) Cor also caught the return trip of the with 2816 and 1401 from Edmonton and submitted these great photographs taken at Bengal and at Ogden as it was about to be backed into Ogden Yard. For those of you not familiar with the Red Deer Sub., BENGAL siding (M1.2) is immediately south of the ZOO siding (M1.3); the Bow River is between the sidings (if you think I am making this up, check pg. 14-82 of the 2008 Canadian Trackside Guide. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/em10.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/em11.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/em12.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/em13.jpg The 1020 foot long (311m) consist was CP 4-6-4 Hudson 2816, Auxiliary Tender 35508, CP FP9A 1401, CP Tool Car 29114, CP Power-Steam Generator Car 96, leased coaches RPCX 5503 & 5534, CP 101 Club Car Dominion, CP 102 Coach Ernest 'Smoky' Smith VC, Baggage NSR 9107 Shoreview, CP 110 Sleeper H.B. A little history of CP’s “other” F-units: CPR 4101 was part of an A-B-A set of Fs CP acquired from the NEBKOTA RAILWAY and was used for several years on the Royal Canadian Pacific and the CP Business Trains. After a few years of operation FP7 No. 1400 was withdrawn from service and used for parts, while F9B No. 1900 and FP9A 1401 were stored as they needed overhauls. Rather than repair the units CP acquired a pair of ex-VIA/CN FP9As from Ohio Central that are now used on specials. When No. 2816 hits the road it often takes a diesel along as backup power. Rather than use a unit from the freight pool, the steam crew decided to use an existing unit and restore No. 1401 to service at minimal expense. The locomotive was built for CN in July 1958 as No. 6541 and was transferred to VIA with the same number. After VIA retired its F-unit fleet, the engine was sold to Nebraska's Nebkota Railway, which renumbered it 54 along with ex-CN F9B 6612 (Nebkota 66) and ex-CP FP7A 1400 (Nebkota 55). CP purchased the three units in 1998 for the Royal Canadian Pacific luxury train and renumbered the units 1401-1900-1400 respectively. CPR 1400 had very deteriorated wiring and two years ago CP looked into a complete rebuild with a 200HP engine and DB for it and they wisely just decided to buy two other ex-VIA FPAu’s instead. (Bruce Mercer and LBC) http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/1400.jpghttp://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/1401.jpg CPR F9B 1900 has been returned to service after the shop had located and installed a missing part pertaining to overheating It is still assigned to the RCP train. The train includes CPR 4-6-4 Hudson 2816 and support cars, two vintage passenger coaches, a heavyweight business car, a heritage baggage car converted into a travelling museum and a stage boxcar. As was reported previously in CRO, Canadian Pacific will test two high efficiency National Railway Equipment Company "GenSet" locomotives. The pair of environmentally friendly

Page 9: Revised 06/03/08

prototype locomotives will be tested in southern Ontario. The locomotives are unique in that instead of one 2,100 horsepower diesel locomotive engine they utilize three independent diesel engine GenSets to achieve the same amount of total horsepower. Overall, the technology aims to achieve significant fuel savings, ultra-low emissions and longer engine life. Additionally, CP has equipped three quarters of its existing locomotive fleet with automatic engine start/stop technology, which reduces emissions from idling locomotives. There are currently only two CP SD40-2’s remaining on the roster that still sport the original full-sized “CP RAIL Miulti-mark” These units are CP 5863 and 5911. However, as a BOSTON and MAINE fan, I was happy to catch CP GP40-2 4650 (ex-BM), but I’m sure most will consider this an “Industrial ugly”. The S-7, the former Atlas Specialty Steel #10, (xx-CN 8223) which was based in Welland, Ontario, was acquired by the LRHS in May 2002 along with former CN S-4 #8181, which toiled at Atlas as #9, and now is principal excursion engine CACV 3051, which powers tourist trains in season out of Milford, 7 miles north of the Junction. CACV 3052 is at the Junction to assist the moving when necessary of former Penn Central GG1 #4909, which has been sold to Henry Ford Museum of Dearborn, Michigan. Power on the CP train this day was CP 5966, SOO 6045, CP 5776, 5671, STLH 5615 and CP 7307. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/5966.jpg On April 19th, Wayne D. Craig Konopski’s CP-CN Lakehead Report

A new alternate design air ride seat is being tested on several GE-built CP AC4400CW’s. The engineer’s seat on five AC4400CW’s will be replaced with a new test seat manufactured by Seats Inc, and crew comments will be evaluated over the next 12 months. In mid-April CP AC4400CW 8638 is the first unit equipped with a new “Seats Inc.” chairs.

It only takes one stop at the gas pump to see the effects that the high cost of a barrel of oil has on all our lives. When you consider the amount of fuel CP consumes to move products across their network, it is obvious that they must do everything possible to cut fuel costs. For each $1.00 rise in a barrel of oil, it adds approximately 7.3 million to their yearly budget. To assist in their fuel conservation efforts, the following changes to the shutdown policy is effective immediately. If the locomotive is expected to be standing for 15 minutes or more, (i.e. trains staged on line, trains waiting work blocks, unmanned trains waiting for crews, locomotive(s) set out on line, locomotives stored at tie-up points, locomotives on shop tracks, etc., the locomotive(s) must be shut down. (A recent visit to St-Luc Yard proved to us that this new regulation was already in effect. It was strange not hearing the familiar idling locomotives – Ed).

VIA RAIL and COMMUTER RAILROADS

In late April CRO learned that GO TRANSIT has apparently advised BOISE LOCOMOTIVE to discontinue sending any more MP40PH-3C until minor modification can be made on the roofs (which leak) and the electrical problems are resolved. It is unknown if the delivered GO units will have to return to Boise or not. CADRAIL in Lachine, Quebec finished out the month of April with a flurry of activity. It began with the delivery of brand-new RP20BD RPRX 5407. The new RAILPOWER demonstrator was destined for St. Jean, Quebec to show off on the Montreal, Maine & Atlantic (MM&A). It arrived on April 21st. http://bicotsphotos.fotopic.net/p49887634.html (RPRX RP20BD 5407, (photo by Marc Caya) On April 29th, RPRX RP20BD 5407 was billed to the Port of Montreal, for testing at the Montreal Harbour. Here is Ed van Pelt’s shot of RAILPOWER RPRX 5407 east of Montreal at MM&A’s yard in Farnham, QC on April 27, 2008. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/5407.jpg

RPRX 5407 arrived back from the MM&A at St-Luc on May 7th, and was interchanged to CN at Parsley on May 9th for delivery to the Port of Montreal. Interestingly this three-engine RP20BD Genset is on a GP9 frame, and not a 2nd generation EMD or GE frame like more recent Genset-conversions have been. Of the four RP20 on EMD frame conversions before the 5407, three were on GP38's, and one was on a GP40 frame. All 98 for UP, plus the five leasers RPRX 5402-5406, are on GE B23-7, B30-7, or B36-7 frames. The frame for RPRX 5407 is ex-UP GP9B

Page 14: Revised 06/03/08

158B. That unit later went to SANTA FE as their no. 125, was converted to a slug, and made it all the way to BNSF as their 3966. The unit was stripped by BNSF's Topeka shops and sent to RAILPOWER early last year. At the time, BNSF released photos of it in documentation as being the frame for a fuel-cell hybrid conversion. That project is a joint venture of the Fuel Cell Propulsion Institute, Department of Defense, and BNSF. Railpower is listed as a vendor in the project to provide the Green Goat platform to be used in the project. For reasons unknown, Railpower supplied ex-CP 1704 in its place. That unit moved to Denver and later Topeka as BNSF 1205 last summer. This frame was held aside for future projects. It was seen outside of CAD carrying the number RPRX 1700 in the spring of 2007. http://bicotsphotos.fotopic.net/p41252756.html (Frame photo at CADRAIL by Marc Caya)

Later that week, EMDX GP22 7102 (Ex-CP GP9u 1637), was moved to CN’s Taschereau Yard in Montreal. Ian McCord who works at OTTAWA CENTRAL sent CRO this image of EMDX 7102 has been forwarded to Ottawa for testing on the OTTAWA CENTRAL on OCRR trains 529 and 530. The unit 7102 failed in Ottawam and was sent back to CN-Taschereau Yard and then to CADRAIL http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/7102power.jpg http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=232882&nseq=0 http://www.flickr.com/photos/71639059@N00/2444717568/

Note: There has been much discussion on this locomotive’s exact model designation. CRO has learned that it actually called a “Repower 710ECO” or a “GP22”, and not a GP9ECO, or a GP67 as it is called in the Umler (Electonic Equipment Management System). Here is the link to the 5407's roster page, with its complete prior unit history, and several photos. At press time in mid-May, the unit had been returned to CADRAIL for repairs. http://www.trainweb.org/gensets/railpower/rprx/5407.html

This unit is the demonstrator for EMD’s 710ECO engine repowering program. The platform, ex-CP 1637, was moved to CADRAIL in 2007. An historical photo showing CP 1637 undergoing conversion to EMDX GP22 7102. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/cp1637.jpg

Around the same time in late April, UPY 897 and 898, the latest two RAILPOWER RP20CD six axle Gensets left CADRAIL headed for the Union Pacific in Chicago (Proviso Yard) , and ultimately to the UP Yard in Roseville, CA. These two units were built on retired UP SD40-2 frames – UPY 897 was formerly UP 7891, nee UP 3622, while UPY 898 was formerly UP 3635. The pair headed south to Toronto behind the power of CP train 233-24 on April 24th and reached Chicago on April 28th. On April 28th UPY 899 was been released from CADRAIL moved to St-Luc the next day. UPY 899 is former UP SD40-2 7916. (Note: The actual number is WP 7916, which is a holding number that the UP assigned the unit after it was retired. This has been done with several units, without any real visual indication that the reporting marks have been changed. The unit's number when it was in service with the UP was UP 3613). UPY 899, which is the last unit of the current RAILPOWER RP20CD order for UP, left Montreal and arrived in Toronto on May 1st and was on the UP in Chicago on May 12th. All three are fully painted in BNSF colors.

Ian Pyatt and Wendell Lemon reported six of the ECR Exports latest batch arrived in Halifax, NS in mid-May. Ten left Ontario hauled by CN 5787 with ECR 77013, 77015, 77017, 77018, 77019, 77020. As well four others are currently at the IRSI Repair Shop in New Brunswick.

In May 2008, BHP Billiton was scheduled to take delivery of their 10 SD70ACe locomotives from EMCC. These locomotives were part of a BNSF order numbered in the group 9130-9229, and are urgently required for expanding iron ore traffic. The order is in addition to that placed by BHPBIO for 1 similar units numbered 4324-4333, which are expected to be delivered in December 2008. The new loco's will be delivered painted in BNSF base orange livery, but without stripes or logos, which are sure to become eagerly sought after by rail buff’s “down under”. They will have typical US domestic features such as roof level mounted number boards and nose mounted headlights. It is expected that external mirrors will be removed as they would foul BHPBIO's loading gauge. Since the arrival of BHPBIO's original "low clearance" model SD70ACes, the car dumpers of Nelson Point and Finucane Island have either been replaced or rebuilt and will now accommodate the larger profile of a standard US domestic unit. Apparently the new outline has also been checked to clear the Mount Whaleback load-out tunnel. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/cad1.jpg BHP SD70ACe’s waiting shipment to Australia in Halifax, Nova Scotia a few weeks ago.

SHORTLINES, REGIONALS & INDUSTRIALS Raymond Farand caught brand new prototype EMDX GP22 7102, (ex-CP 1637, nee-CP 8511) taken on April 29th at Walkley Yard. The unit, rebuilt and just released by CADRAIL in Montreal is a 2000hp 710ECO, and was sent to Ottawa for evaluation and tested on the Beachburg Subdivision between Ottawa and Pembroke the first week of May. Unfortunately, the locomotive suffered a major failure, and EMDX 7102 left Ottawa on May 7th billed for CN-

KELOWNA PACIFIC RAILWAY has returned three leased units: LLPX SW1500’s 219 and 219, GMTX GP38-2 2643; and are moving on CN to NRE-Paducah.

In April, GODERICH-EXETER’s Diesel Shop in Goderich, Ontario performed repair work on GEXR GP35 2211 and GP9-4 4001. Sitting stored-unserviceable outside of the shop were GP9 901, FP9u’s 1400 and 1401, GP35m 3834, GP40 4046 and CEFX GP38-3 6537. In May three HATX SD40-2’s all in HELM’s corporate burgundy and dark blue paint scheme, have been re-assigned from RAILAMERICA to the GEXR, with a possible fourth on the way. They were at Winnipeg Transconna Shop on May 8th, and then arrived on the GEXR on May 9th on train 431 with HLCX SD40-2’s 6061, 6091 and 6522 trailing, and were moved to Stratford. HLCX 6061 is ex-CR 3318 / PC 6065 / PRR 6065 and HLCX 6091 is ex-CN 5208. The fourth unit coming could be HLCX 6058. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=449445 HLCX 6522. Here are links to former GEXR GP9 180 in fresh paint. This locomotive was originally built as a low-nosed GP9 for CARTIER RAILWAY as their #6, and later numbered #56. It was one of he last Geep’s built in Canada at GMD in 1960. In 1990 it was sold to HELM Financial, who sent it to the LAMOILLE VALLEY in Vermont for overhaul. After completion It was then moved to Ontario’s GODERICH-EXETER, and then transferred to the ONTARIO L’ORIGNAL Railway in 1996. Finally in 2005, it went stateside to the MID-MICHIGAN Railroad. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/jimthias/Trains/MS180-0684.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/jimthias/Trains/MS180-0687.jpg http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y17/jimthias/Trains/MS180-0677.jpg CANAC SW1200RS 1391 will move on CP from Red Deer to Blackfalds, Alberta for lease by ALBERTA & ORIENT GLYCOL COMPANY LIMITED. RAIL SWITCHING SERVICE SW9 5176 has been moved to their shop in Stettler, Alberta.

A group of local investors and four municipal governments have purchased the former CP railway line in the Nipawin area, which included the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways which provided 32% of the funding. After more than a year of negotiations with CP which was mediated by the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA), the new Torch River Rail Inc. now owns the 45-kilometre rail line, including this historic bridge (See photo) http://tinyurl.com/52hmoq The former CP White Fox subdivision runs from the Nipawin town limits to Choicel and in recent years was usually operated with a pair of back to back CP GP38-2’s, and in years past by GP9’s and lightweight RS23’s. http://www.nipawinjournal.com/News/392888.html

MANITOBA HYDRO’s 6 mile tramway linking two power dams on the Winnipeg River is slated for closure in 2009. Constructed almost 100 years ago, the small standard guage railway is the lifeline between the village of Pointe du Bois and the generating station at Slave Falls on the Manitoba/Ontario border. The line was a virtual musuem for many years featuring Mack Railbuses and railtrucks and a 80 year old Davenport centre cab, arch-bar trucked wooden flatcars, 56lb rail and ancient switchstands. The 4-4-0 #3 that currently runs in tourist train service in Winnipeg as the Prairie Dog Central, was a regular out at Pointe du Bois and made

the run from there to the CPR connection at Lac du Bonnet until those tracks were pulled up in 1962. These days, the railbuses running are converted school buses and the locomotives are small GE 4 wheel versions [a 25T and a 35T] and the flatcars have been modernized with a pair of 50's era ex CNR steel cars. A new road will be built and then the tramway will be pulled up and the equipment sold off. http://www.gov.mb.ca/conservation/eal/registries/5282tramway/ea1_10.pdf

THE BC RAIL STORY

By Claude Prutton and Mark Forseille.

PGE Part 2:

These month we showcase the PACIFIC GREAT EASTERN Railway’s myriad of attractive paint schemes applied to the MLW’s. We will start with the PGE RS3's, built between 1951 and 1955. The first 8 (561 to 568) were delivered as RSC-3's and were later re-trucked to RS-3's. Photo by Claude Prutton. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/3.jpg In 1952 the people of British Columbia elected the Social Credit Government under the leadership of W.A.C. Bennett. Almost immediately Bennett made plans to tap the huge resources within the Province George to the Peace River & beyond. The line ventually reached as far as Ft. Nelson (mile post 979). Branch lines off the main route were at MP495 to the Stuart & Takla subs & MP567 to the McKenzie sub & to the Dawson Creek sub at MP 658. The main resources collected were Wood chips, Lumber, Grain & Sulpher, the latter of which is a byproduct of natural Gas. Because of all this expansion PGE was constantly short of motive power & orders were placed with MLW for more RS18’s with an eventual roster total of 30 units of this model. In addition the Co. entered the age of 2nd generation power with the purchase of 30 3000hp C630 & M630 road units. In addition the Railway leased as many units as they could get from a variety of Railroads. Because trains were becoming long & heavy the Co. experimented with Locotrol. They bought four retired B units (2 Alco & 2 FM’s) & installed locotrol receivers in them. One of there units was then mu’ed with conventional power about 70 cars from the end of a 100 car train. PGE introduced passenger service between North Vancouver & Prince George in 1956 with the acquisition of self propelled Budd cars. They acquired 3 RDC’s & 9 RDC1’s. This service lasted until the late 1990’s when it was permanently suspended. PGE RDC-1 # BC-12 Taken by Al Chione at the PGE shops in North Vancouver, BC. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/22.jpg PGE RDC-3 # BC-31 Taken by Al Chione at the Lillooet Station. On this photo you can see the ditch lights located on the roof of the Budd Car. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/31.jpg The Co. never installed ABS or CTC signals but instead in 1957 installed a microwave communication system. Towers were placed strategically through out the system & all movements were & still are authorized by the dispatcher who provides Block Occupancy Permits which are given to the crews & read back by both the Engineer & Conductor. The same applies for MOW crews. On April 1 1972 the name of the Co. was changed to BC Rail & in subsequent issues we will explore BC Rail’s ongoing Motive Power acquisitions & talk about the heavy grades encountered & the need for manned pusher locomotives in the coast mountains. Correction: Last month we inadvertently placed the wrong link to one of Claude’s photo’s in the MAY CRO. The May Issue has now been updated online with the corrected PGE MLW RSC-3 561 photo Claude took the photo in July 2002.

SOUTH OF THE BORDER In late April, GENERAL ELECTRIC proudly displayed some of their newest locomotives at the GE Stockholders Display in Erie, PA. The line-up included the new GE “Hybrid” unit, a new CSX Gevo (CSXT 865), and RIO TINTO 8111 (An Australian Export Locomotive) all shown outside the Convention Center on what is left of the CSX Bayfront industrial tracks. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=232816&nseq=63 http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/2010.jpg Paul Duda’s April 22nd photo of the yard at the GE Plant in Erie. Some GECX units, a BN green unit, a UP Dash-8 all sit in the yard at General Electric. Looking further back into the yard you can see more GECX units along with a few green units. (via Froth) http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=234631&nseq=57 Al Gorney of New York caught five NdeM E60C’s that recently moved from Montreal to Utica, NY. As reported last month, the five NdeM E60Cs were purchased by BDLX and they will be parted out and scrapped. Al added “These locomotives built twenty five years ago only have about 50 hours of service on them!” Of the other three NdeM E60’s, EAO15 is now enroute to Utica and EAO13 and EAO18 Are still in Lachine Quebec. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/ndm1.jpg Al Gorney also photographed MOHAWK ADIRONDACK & NORTHERN C425 804 still sporting its BC RAIL paint scheme, which was leased to the NYSW because the units available in Utica were all out of service. A new turbo is coming for the NYSW GP40 3040 and until it arrives, they will lease the MHWA C425. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/805.jpg On April 23rd, 2008 MM&A (Former AMTRAK) F40PH-2 227 arrived at AMERICAN MOTIVE POWER, in Dansville, NY for repairs. Gary Knapp clicked a modern Mixed train on May 9th when CP train 250 ran with SD40-2 5963 leading a pair of SOO LINE SD 60's in candy apple red. Not a locomotive consist to take for granted these days. After lifting four BBD-Built Commuter Cars for New Jersey Transit from Bluff Point, NY 250 became a large mixed train, using the term loosely! This was the oldest road unit on CP when it was retired. As far as the other F-units in that batch; the last digit was the same on CP as AMT; i.e. AMT 1304 was ex CP 4074; AMT 1305 was ex-CP 4075, etc. Ex-AMT 1306 is for sale at OZARK MOUNTAIN RAILCAR who have AMT FP7A 1304 as well. www.ozarkmountainrailcar.com The Bridge Line: A June 1975 photo of a new D&H PS-2 red and yellow covered hopper. Letters Good evening Will, Just a little side note, it's not a GP40-2L that got stuck in Northern Quebec, its actually CN SD40-2W 5252, that was sent as an extra from Joffre yard to attempt to free the bogged down Train 426. Also today, while passing by Taschereau yard, I noticed a EMD "Repower" GP9 (or GP22 as I read somewhere else) 7102 parked on the ready track, as well as another NdeM E60C coupled to it, and AMT GP9RM 1312 in for repairs. The shop was also pretty full, with CN GP38-2W 4785 (newly painted, looks great!), 4760, numerous GP9RMs, and CN 4717, all in for repairs. Earlier in the week, CN 7233 (if my memory serves me right) had its entire long hood removed from the frame, and was undergoing heavy work. Its been a while since I popped in there! Great issue, and keep up the fantastic work! Looking forward to reading the next issue! Luc Doiron, Montreal, QC Hi Will, Have just gone through your April edition of the CRO and noted the reference to the scrapping of NJ 1548 by CASCO. I thought the attached photo - taken 7 March 2008 - might be of interest. http://www.canadianrailwayobservations.com/2008/6/1548.jpg Bill MacIntyre, Toronto, ON Will, I enjoyed reading through the May issue of Canadian Railway Observations, but noted an error in CP Vignettes concerning the CLC/FM H-Line (CLC designation H16-44) unit 8721. That unit is identified as being a "baby Trainmaster." This statement is incorrect and reflects a common misperception that comes up on the railfan discussion groups all the time. Baby Train master units were six axle units of less horsepower than the regular 2400HP Trainmaster unit. While the CPR had several actual 2400HP Trainmaster units, (CLC designation H24-66) CPR did not have any baby Trainmaster units. (H16--66) All CP CLC H-Line units were four-axle H16-44 units. William, Wanted to let you know that my web site has moved from rlehmer.50megs.com to www.calcoastrails.com. You can find photos from my 1985 Canada trip at http://www.calcoastrails.com/cgi/photo_index.php?group=CDN85&index=DATE Enjoy, Ron Lehmer [email protected] Hello, A while ago I decided to create a map of Saskatchewan that would show all the abandoned trackage in addition to the current state of affairs. This map can be found in the files section. I now need your help to perfect it. I myself would like to see dates along with the abandoned trackage, but cannot find such a database at this point. Perhaps we can all pitch in with dates for the sections we know. A more serious problem is that the map itself s not 100% accurate. To create it I used this 1947-48 map as a base: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~skwheat/trial.html And then I updated it using the latest (Apr 19 2008) Government map. In the process a number of issues became apparent: a) Lines built and abandoned before 1947 aren’t included. b) Similarly lines built after 1948 and abandoned before 2008 weren’t included. There shouldn’t much of the former, while the later is limited to potash spurs and overall ‘stubs’. For instance CN abandoned its line to Kelvington, so CP built a spur, etc. Due to CN & CP swapping lines, some sections might not be shown correctly. Any other suggestions or help would be appreciated. Roman Litarchuk, Saskatoon, SK [email protected]
