La précédente edition de Notre Festival a connu un énorme succès grâce alla presse internationale qui en a souligné L’importance.Ayant eu l’an dernier un Président de jury de la classe de Claude Lelouch, il nous paraissait difficile de continuer sur une lancée aussi prestigieuse, même si notre tradition - valoriser la qualité - nous a toujours accompagnés au fil des années : présidents et jurés du calibre de Mario Monicelli, Ettore Scola, John Landis, Peter Bogdanovich, Georges Lautner, Edouard Molinaro, Lina Wertmuller, Claude Zidi, les oscarisés Luis Bacalov et Vittorio Storaro, Claude Pinoteau, Virna Lisi Michael Radford, Gabriele Muccino.. et tant d’autres.L’arrivée d’un cinéaste prestigieux comme Kusturica ne fait qu’enrichir notre Festival. Emir Kusturica, entre autres Chevalier de l’Ordre de la Légion d’Honneur en France, réalisateur Serbe et maître incontesté d’un cinema brillant, coloré, musical, surréel, artiste capable de mélanger et de jouer avec tous les genres de la comédie, farse et drame, sachant à la fois faire rire et pleurer, peut vanter un important palmarès de Prix :Meilleur Premier Film à la Mostra del Cinema di Venezia 1981 avec “ Ti Ricordi di Dolly Bell ”, Meilleure Mise en Scène à Cannes 1989 pour le film “ Le Temps des Gitans ”, Ours d’Argent et Prix Spécial du Jury au Festjval de Berlin 1993 avec “ Arizona Dream, Palme d’Or au Festival de Cannes 1995 avec le film “ Underground ”, Lion d’Argent à la Mostra del Cinema di Venezia 1998 avec “ Black Cat, White Cat ”, Meilleur Film Européen Globo d’Oro 2004 à Rome avec “ La vie est un Miracle ”. À part les nombreuses stars présentes comme chaque année, notre équipe s’est concentrée sur la sélection de grands films de comédie choisissant avec intuition des avant premières qui deviennent ensuite de grands succès internationaux comme par exemple, et je suis honoré de le souligner, “ Death of Stalin ” de Armando Iannacci avec Steve Buscema primé à notre Festival meilleure Mise en Scène et par la suite Meilleure Comédie Européenne aux EFA 2018.Je suis heureux de présenter cette année une excellente sélection:“ Superlopez ” qui vient de remporter le Prix Goya meilleures Effets Spéciaux.“ Bad Poems ” deuxième film de Gabor Reisz, réalisateur de “ For Some Inexplicable Reason ”.Nous aurons une première mondiale en compétition “ Le Mystère d’Henri Pick ” et encore :“ Juliet Naked ” avec Ethan Hawke et Rose Byrne, film adapté du roman de Nick Hornby.J’annonce aussi que nous aurons en compétition “ King of Thieves ” de James Marsh (réalisateur de “ The Theory of Everything ” et Prix Oscar 2009 pour le meilleur documentaire “ Man of Wire ” avec Michael Caine et Charlie Cox).

KUSTURICA PRESIDENT OF JURY AT THE 16° MONTE-CARLO FILM FESTIVAL

Last year’s edition of the Monte Carlo Film Festival de la Comédie obtained notable success highlighted by numerous mentions in front pages of international newspapers, proving its continuous growth and recognition. After last year’s edition, presided by Claude Lelouch, it became difficult to find yet another president that could be worthy of the calibre of previous participants such as Ettore Scola, John Landis, Mario Monicelli, Peter Bogdanovich, Lina Wertmuller, Claude Zidi, Louis Bacalov, Claude Pinoteau, Vittorio Storaro, Michael Radford, Gabriele Muccino, Edouard Molinaro, Virna Lisi and many others.This year’s jury presided by a prestigious cinematographer such as Emir Kusturica ads yet further prestige to the “Monte Carlo Film Festival”. Emir, named Commander of the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, is a Serbian master of coloured, musical and surreal cinema, that masters the ability of mixing comedy with drama as well as laughter and crying. Kusturica is the winner of numerous awards including: The Golden Lion in Venice in 1981 for “Do you remember Dolly Bell”, Best director at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989 for “Time of the Gypsies”, the Silver Bear / Special Jury award at the Berlin Festival in 1993 for “Arizona Dream”, the Palme D’or in Cannes for “Underground” in 1995 and the Silver Lion in 1998 in Venice as the best director for “Black cat, white cat” and Cesar Award for best European Film in 2004 for “Life is a miracle”. Appreciated and recognized by international critics for his surreal, grotesque and satirical style, Kusturica will be accompanied at the MCFF by other prestigious jury members including Sandra Milo, iconic Italian cinema actress involved in projects with Fellini, Rosselini, Zampa, Molinarò, and Jean Renoir, as well as French actress Mathilda May, known and appreciated even in Italy and Edoardo Leo, Itaian actor and winner of various Globi d’oro, Nastri D’argento and David di Donatello. This year’s event will still occur under the High Patronage of S.A.S Prince Albert II de Monaco and the Italian Embassy. The festival remains a unique and global showcase for Comedy, a genre loved by the public in the international

panorama of Film festivals. At the Monte-Carlo Film Festival, along with great stars, there are also great comedy films, with previews that are often great intuitions of our artistic directors. I am honored to be able to underline that “Death of Stalin” by Armando Iannucci, with Steve Buscemi, had his first French preview in Monte Carlo winning the award for best director, later also became the winner of the “Best European Comedy” award of 2018.Among various movies this year, we will also present “Superlopez” recent winner of the Goya award for best “special effects”. “Bad Poems” - second feature by Gabor Reisz - director of “For Some Inexplicable Reason”, who had already competed at our Festival. We will also screen the worldwide preview, of “Le Mystere de Henri Pick”. Also in competition we will screen “Juliet Naked” with Ethan Hawke and Rose Byrne, an adaptation of the novel by Nick Hornby. Among the films out of competition I’m pleased to announce “King of Thieves” directed by James Marsh director of “The Theory of Everything” and Oscar winner for best documentary in 2009 for “Man on wire” - with Michael Caine and Charlie Cox. And finally I expect you all at the Award Gala on Saturday evening, March 9th at the Grimaldi Forum with the television coverage of Canale 5 for the film awards and career prize ceremony. It will be an exciting parade of stars that I will personally present to the audience of the 16th edition of the Monte Carlo Film Festival.

WHAT A COMEDY SHOULD BE

EN - As comedies always had a bit of trouble finding its place in film festivals, we thought it was just fair to make one only for comedies that could make audiences laugh and think at the same time. Let us say that after 15 editions our mission is fulfilled. Next challenge? Well, we tried to see what kind of comedy was even more reviled: the romantic comedy. Wasn’t it the apex of foolishness and insubstantiality, disposable as a cheap handkerchief?Well, no.

The romantic comedy has an elementary narrative driving force, the romantic tension between its protagonists, reflected in a roller coaster of continuously disappointed and finally fulfilled expectations. And precisely from such an universal and essential point of departure it explores new and current issues. Examples this year are not lacking: the mature marriage break-up in the Argentinian The Unexpected Love, the life-changing aspirations on the Israel-Palestine border of Tel Aviv on Fire, the existential crisis of a not-so-young woman in the Belgian Emma Peeters, the memory romance of the Hungarian Bad Poems, the conflict between artistic insignificance and transcendence of Juliet, Naked, the impossible and Woody Allen-esque love of The Story of a Summer Lover, the search for true talent in the French Le mystere de Henry Pick, or, to finish, nothing less than the (ahem) salvation of the planet in the Spanish Super Lopez.This year three European directors who perfectly embody the spirit of the festival return to Monte-Carlo: Javier Ruiz Caldera, Paul Negoescu and Gabor Reisz. Young, talented, with a deep and fresh look on comedy.May you enjoy all of them!

CE QU’UNE COMÉDIE DEVRAIT ÊTRE

FR - Considérant que les comédies ont toujours eu du mal à trouver leur place dans les festivals de film, nous avons pensé qu’il était juste de créer un festival uniquement pour les comédies qui puissent en meme temps faire rire et réfléchir le public. Apres 15 éditions du Monte Carlo Film Festival de la comédie nous pouvons dire que notre mission est accomplie. Le prochain défi? Nous avons identifié le genre de comédie le plus critiqué : la comédie romantique. N’est-ce pas le sommet de la bêtise et du manque de substance, aussi interchangeable qu’un un mouchoir?Et bien non!

La comédie romantique à une force narrative fondamentale. La tension romantique entre ses protagonistes est reflétée comme des montagnes russes don’t les déceptions sont finalement comblées. Justement, à partir d’un point de départ aussi universel qu’essentiel, elle explore des questions nouvelles et actuelles. Les exemples de cette année n’en manquent pas: la rupture du mariage dans le film Argentin « The Unexpected Love », les aspirations qui changent la vie à la frontière Israélo-Palestinienne de Tel-Aviv, la crise existentielle d’une femme plus si jeune dans le film Belge « Emma Peeters », les mémoires de romance de « Hungarian Bad Poems », le conflit entre l’insignifiance artistique et la transcendance de Juliette dans « Naked », l’amour impossible et Woody Allen-esque dans « The Story of a Summer Lover », la recherche d’un véritable talent dans « Le mystère de Henry Pick », et, pour finir, rien de plus que le sauvetage de la planète dans le film espagnol « Super Lopez ».Cette année, trois réalisateurs européens évoquant parfaitement l’esprit du festival sont de retour à Monte-Carlo: Javier Ruiz Caldera, Paul Negoescu et Gabor Reisz. FR - Sans boulot ni diplôme, Sandra, ex miss Pas-de Calais, revient s’installer chez sa mère à Boulogne-sur-Mer après 15 ans sur la Côte d’Azur. Embauchée à la conserverie locale, elle repousse vigoureusement les avances de son chef et le tue accidentellement. Deux autres filles ont été témoins de la scène. Alors qu’elles s’apprêtent à appeler les secours, les trois ouvrières découvrent un sac plein de billets dans le casier du mort. Une fortune qu’elles décident de se partager. C’est là queleurs ennuis commencent...

EN - Sandra is a young woman forced to leave the south of France to flee a violent husband. Without attachment, she returned to Boulogne-sur-Mer, the city of her childhood which she left almost 15 years ago. She finds her mother there and a world she left behind. Without money, she is hired in a fish cannery where she befriends two workers. But one day, one of her colleagues tackles her insistently, she defends herself and kills him accidentally.

Persuadé qu’il s’agit d’une imposture, un célèbre critique littéraire décide de mener l’enquête, avec l’aide inattendue de la fille de l’énigmatique Henri Pick.

EN - In a strange library in the heart of Brittany, a young editor finds an extraordinary manuscript. She immediately decides to publish it. The novel becomes a bestseller. But the author, Henri Pick, a Breton pizza chef who died two years earlier, “never wrote anything besides a grocery list”, according to his widow. Suspecting a literary hoax, a famed critic decides to investigate, with the unexpected help of the daughter of the mysterious Henri Pick.

FR - Petru est professeur de mathématiques à l’Université polytechnique. Il a une relation ouverte avec Irina, ce qui permet à Petru de temps en temps de voir d’autres femmes. Néanmoins, Petru souhaiterait rompre avec elle parce qu’il ne réussit pas avoir d’orgasmes pendant leurs relations sexuelles. Un jour, Irina découvre qu’elle est enceinte. A ce moment-là, curieusement, Petru change d’avis et décide de s’engager avec Irina, mais elle n’est pas très convaincue de ses intentions. Pendant ce temps, Petru rencontre Sinziana, une fille à qui il doit donner des cours pour un examen de mathématiques à l’École polytechnique.

While wallowing in self-pity, Tamás takes a trip down memory lane to figure out if love only exists when it’s practically gone.
