Me? Read the Whole Bible? You Gotta Be Kidding!

There is today in the Church a strong emphasis on encouraging all Catholics to become familiar with the Scriptures, and to make these Scriptures a part of their faith and a part of their prayer. With this encouragement in mind, I am offering once again a Bible reading opportunity. The journey starts on December 1. In the course of one year, the entire Bible is read, in an organized way, from cover to cover. The program consists of a daily scripture reading schedule accompanied by background material for each month’s group of readings. The daily reading includes a passage from one of the four gospels, a psalm or proverb, and a third reading from one of the other books of the Bible. The readings follow a specific order and are read continuously, so they are not random or taken out of context. Each day’s reading would take a commitment of about thirty minutes. The background material, for the most part, is blended from the work of established biblical scholars. This is a reading program rather than a formal Bible study. Considering the extent of the reading activity, there are no questions to answer, no tests, no required meetings, no homework assignments. The sequence would be sent to your email each month. Just print, read, savor, and pray. There is no cost, and if you find that the program is not quite what you expected, it can be adapted to your own circumstances, or discontinued at any time. In the past ten years, approximately 350 people have undertaken this program. I’ve gone through it multiple times myself now, and have gained new insights and directions for my life with each reading. The program is a good way to acquire a basic familiarity with the Bible. If you are up to such a challenge, call me as soon as possible so that I can set you up and get the necessary material to you before December 1. I'd be happy, of course, to answer any questions. ~Deacon Jim Furey St. John the Evangelist Church, 630-289-7670

We are holding our annual Advent raffle for all of the parishioners and friends of St. Bernadette once again this year. Our fundraising efforts have been on pause since the spring and this raffle is a largely contact-free way to provide an additional opportunity for

you to support St. Bernadette Parish. Many of you have continued to support St. Bernadette through our weekly Sunday collection, even during the lockdown, and may simply prefer to continue to do so, we remind everyone that this is entirely voluntary. We will not be selling tickets after Masses this year, but they are available in the rectory. Prizes are the same as in previous years, with 5 early bird drawings in addition to the grand prize: Thanksgiving Day ..................................... $200 November 29 ............................................ $200 December 6 .............................................. $200 December 13 ............................................. $200 December 20 ............................................ $200 Christmas Eve grand prize ....................... $1,000 Thank you for all the ways you support St. Bernadette Parish.

The Giving Tree Names will be available on our Giving Tree starting the week of November 21-22. Tags on the tree have nameless identification cards of members of our own community who are in need, as well as women and children from the Courage Program in Oak Lawn and the birth-age 3 program in Evergreen Park. The tags list

gifts the individual would like for Christmas. We encourage you to take a tag and make Christmas special for someone this year.

Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Paul Harvey was a popular radio broadcaster with a daily program during which he would relate a historical anecdote, but it would have a twist at the end, and then he would intone “and now you know the rest of the story.” Our scriptures today are like that. We await the coming Christ as the readings describe for us how to be good servants, but they give us a limited picture. The famous Proverbs passage, “The Valiant Wife” is edited down from the full selection (31:10–31) to just a few verses. Take a couple moments to explore the fuller selection. Psalm 128 proclaims, “Blessed are those who fear the Lord,” but in this context “fear” doesn’t mean dread and trepidation. Rather, this kind of fear means “to show awe,” and there are wonderful promises made to those who do. The letter to the Thessalonians continues the call to be alert, and Matthew shows us various ways that people might respond to God in the parable of the talents. The Gospel is presented in long and shortened versions; be sure to read the whole thing so you can get “the rest of the story.” Remain In Me In the story of the talents, the head of the household leaves the servants “talents” or money, which they are expected to foster and develop during the leader’s absence. Today we think of talent as an innate ability or a skill. It is interesting that they were distributed “according to ability,” which would express a certain intimacy as we realize that the master knew each one, and already had an idea of their capabilities. They were not given explicit instructions like “put this in the bank” or “invest this in your portfolio” or “take piano lessons.” Rather, we are told that the goods were divided unequally. One received five, one received two, and the last received one. Bear Much Fruit When the head of the household returned, the outcomes were just as varied as we and our

responses might be. Some people are multitalented, and capable of accomplishing many great things, like the servant who turned five into ten. Others may be more inclined to do one or two things very well and may excel in them. Still, there are some who may struggle in life, and their accomplishments are very small. But those who made use of their gifts were praised and told, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” When it came to the second coming, the return of their master, they both made some effort. The only one in whom the head of household showed any disappointment was the one who made absolutely no effort, the one who was frozen by fear or indifference. As we journey toward the kingdom, there are not always clear instructions. We are simply asked to try, to give it our best effort. There is nothing in the passage to say that these servants didn’t make mistakes along the way, but their master saw them and loved and praised them for their actions, their attempts, as God will do with us. And now you know the rest of the story. Today’s Readings: Prv 31:10–13, 19–20, 30–31; Ps 128:1–2, 3, 4–5; 1 Thes 5:1–6; Mt 25:14–30 (14–15, 19–21) Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

pre-recorded Sunday Masses. You can watch with us live at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, or any time later that week. (Recorded Masses will be kept for up to a month.) We will also stream Masses for Holy Days of Obligation and other special events. Please be aware that if you do attend 4:00 p.m. Mass on any Saturday, you may appear in the stream.

Anger, Loss, and Grief in the Time of Covid: A Living Room

Conversation via Zoom

The Portiuncula Center for Prayer in Frankfort is a virtual gathering on Monday, November 16 from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. In the past few months, our experience of the coronavirus has shifted from “What’s that?” to “What is this going to mean for my life?” The virus is touching all aspects of our personal and community life. Anger, loss, and grief are common experiences and are occurring more often in the uncertain times of the Covid-19 pandemic. What is your experi-ence? A Living Room Conversation is a conversational model developed by dialogue experts in order to facilitate connections be-tween people, despite differences, and even identify areas of common ground and shared understanding. The gather is free, but the Center asks for a free-will donation. If interested, please register by calling 815-464-3880. Facilitators: Janice Keenan, OSF, and Fr. Terry Johnson (pastor at St. Irenaeus in Park Forest)

I would like to remind you once again of the rules we follow here at St Bernadette for worship. While the term “rules” may sound a bit harsh, they are the best practices we are following to keep this virus from spreading within the walls of this community. Since it has been a few months that we have reopened, I would like to remind you of the following and why: •It is important that you reserve your seat in advance for several reasons, first we are limited in the number of people who can have at a Mass. In the event that a person who had attended Mass where to have been diagnosed with COVID, it would be this list we would use to notify those people at that particular Mass/prayer service of such. Lastly, a simple check off of your name upon entering Mass prevents a hold up of the line.

•Hand sanitizer stations are at each entrance and are required to be used by each person upon entering the church and at Communion.

•Assigned Seating is set up to allow people to fill the church from the front to the back, While I realize some of us are comfortable in our “preferred seating” it really is nice to see our church from a different view. More importantly this seating plan prevents cross contamination when a person walks past you who is already seated. Please do not exit the church until the ushers have asked you to exit using the center aisle. There should be no persons leaving Mass using the side rows.

•Face masks-once again, we ask that all people entering Mass are wearing a face mask and it remains in place throughout the entire time. The mask needs to cover both your mouth and your nose as it works to prevent the spread of germs. At no time, other than Communion, should the mask be removed. Remember, the wearing of a mask is preventing any of your microbes from being spread to another person. So be kind & considerate of your pew neighbors. If you find it hard to wear a mask, then perhaps your best bet for your own health and well being for now, is to participate at Mass from home.

You are also encourage to bring donations of food for the Evergreen Park Food Pantry. However, rather than bring them to the altar during the Offering, we ask that you leave them in the vestibule when you arrive. We also ask that you sign up for this Mass (it has been added to our Sunday Mass sign up form available from our website).

Spiritual Communion

While the church gradually reopens, we are nonetheless painfully aware that not everyone is able to join us yet. Being cut off from the sacramental life of the church, especially the Eucharist, creates a great hardship for the Church and Her people. We remind everyone unable to join us in person, but participating spiritually, to do the best they can to practice spiritual communion and to use this prayer in the absence of the Eucharist: “My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.”

The Stewardship Prayer

My parish is composed of people like me. I help make it what it is. It will be friendly, if I am. It will be holy, if I am.

Its pews will be filled, if I help fill them. It will do great work, if I work. It will be prayerful, if I pray.

It will make generous gifts to many causes, if I am a generous giver. It will bring others into its worship, if I invite and bring them.

It will be a parish of loyalty and love, of fearlessness and faith, of compassion, charity, and mercy, if I, who make it what it is, am filled with these same things. Therefore, with the help of God, I now dedicate myself to the task of being all the

things that I want my parish to be. Amen.
