    CONFIDENTIAL 109. (a) Carbonyl compounds react with hydrogen cyanide to fonn cyanohydrins. Startingfrom a suitable carbonyl compound ofyour choice, and using a cyanohydrin as an intermediate,devise a 3-stage synthesis ofcompound B.

[6 marks](b) Compound K, C4H1002, reacts with sodium metal but is insoluble in aqueous sodiumhydroxide.
