Candlemas is one of the most ancient celebrations of

the Christian Church and is mentioned by Egeria,

during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land (381–384).

“All the priests, and after them the bishop, preach, always

taking for their subject that part of the Gospel where

Joseph and Mary brought the Lord into the Temple on the

fortieth day, and Symeon and Anna the prophetess, the

daughter of Phanuel, saw him, treating of the words which

they spake when they saw the Lord, and of that offering

which his parents made. And when everything that is

customary has been done in order, the sacrament is

celebrated, and the dismissal takes place.”

Candlemas marks the end of the Epiphany season.

‘The redemption Christ will bring must be won through

suffering: the incarnation is directed to the Passion;

and Simeon’s final words move our attention away from the

celebration of Christmas, towards the mysteries of Easter.’

l’Église. Égérie la décrit dans le récit de son pèlerinage

en Terre-Sainte (381–384).

Dear friends, forty days ago we celebrated the

birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Now we recall

the day on which the infant Jesus was presented

in the Temple, In their old age Simeon and Anna

recognized him as their Lord, as we today sing of

his glory. In this Eucharist, we celebrate both the

joy of his coming and his searching judgment,

looking back to the day of his birth and forward

to the coming days of his passion.

Priest Let us pray (Please remain standing and hold up your candle to be blessed)

Lord God, the springing source of everlasting

light, bless these candles, and pour into our

hearts the brilliance of your eternal splendour,

that we, who light up this temple to your glory,

may have the darkness of our souls dispelled,

and so stand before you in that eternal city

where you live and reign, one God, now and for

ever.

Thus says the Lord God: See, I am sending my

messenger to prepare the way before me, and the

Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple.

The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight –

indeed, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. But who

can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand

when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like

fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of

silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and

refine them like gold and silver, until they present

offerings to the Lord in righteousness. Then the

offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the

Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

become like his brothers and sisters in every respect,

When the time came for their purification according to

the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to

present him to the Lord (as it is written in the law of

the Lord, "Every firstborn male shall be designated as

holy to the Lord"), and they offered a sacrifice

according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, "a

pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons." Now there

was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this

man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the

consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him.

It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he

would not see death before he had seen the Lord's

Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the

temple; and when the parents brought in the child

Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the

law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God,

saying, "Master, now you are dismissing your servant in

peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen

your salvation, which you have prepared in the

presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to the

Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." And the

child's father and mother were amazed at what was

being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and

said to his mother Mary, "This child is destined for the

falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign

that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of

many will be revealed--and a sword will pierce your

own soul too." There was also a prophet, Anna the

daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a

great age, having lived with her husband seven years

after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of

eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped

there with fasting and prayer night and day.

At that moment she came, and began to praise God

and to speak about the child to all who were looking

for the redemption of Jerusalem. When they had

Syméon. C'était un homme juste et religieux, qui

attendait la Consolation d'Israël, et l'Esprit Saint était

par l'Esprit, Syméon vint au Temple. Les parents y

pensées secrètes d'un grand nombre. » Il y avait là une

femme qui était prophète, Anne, fille de Phanuel, de la

tribu d'Aser. Demeurée veuve après sept ans de

mariage, elle avait atteint l'âge de quatre-vingt-quatre

ans. Elle ne s'éloignait pas du Temple, servant Dieu

jour et nuit dans le jeûne et la prière. S'approchant

d'eux à ce moment, elle proclamait les louanges de

Dieu et parlait de l'enfant à tous ceux qui attendaient la

délivrance de Jérusalem. Lorsqu'ils eurent accompli

tout ce que prescrivait la loi du Seigneur, ils

retournèrent en Galilée, dans leur ville de Nazareth.

CELEBRATING THE EUCHARIST

During this hymn a collection will be taken for the work of the

Cathedral in Downtown Montréal. Please give generously. If you

would like to find out about regular or tax efficient ways of giving

please speak to a steward.

Through our outreach programmes the Cathedral supports many

local organizations which help the needy.

The Cathedral is open seven days a week, between 7.30am and

6pm on weekdays and Sundays, and 11am – 6pm on Saturdays,

for all who want to pray, for all who are looking for peace, a quiet

place to sit and rest, and seek help.

LA LITURGIE EUCHARISTIQUE

Pendant cet hymne, il y aura une quête afin de soutenir la mission

de la cathédrale au centre-ville de Montréal.

Donnez généreusement. Pour obtenir de l’information concernant

une contribution régulière ou les reçus d’impôts, vous pouvez vous

Everyone is welcome to receive Communion or a

blessing at our services, as appropriate. In the

Anglican tradition Communion is in both kinds.

During Communion, there is an opportunity for prayer with

two members of the congregation. You may particularly

invite you to join them.

COMMUNITY

SENIORS' LUNCH Tuesday February 3rd at noon in the

Hollis Lounge. Please confirm attendance with the

Cathedral office by Monday morning, Feb 2.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We are looking for two

volunteers: someone to advise on sound engineering to

set up recording microphones which do not conflict

with our current system, and a graphic designer

interested in helping with the graphic design for a one-

time project of hymnal insert to welcome visitors or

those asking for assistance. Contact the cathedral office

if you are able to help.

The CATHEDRAL BOOK GROUP will discuss The Storied

Life of AJ Firky by Gabrielle Zevin on February 22nd. All

are welcome to join the group. Speak to Ann, Diana or

Jane.

SPONSORS NEEDED FOR FLOWERS to beautify the

Cathedral. The cost of the flowers is approximately

$60.00. Flowers can be offered in thanksgiving, in

memory of a loved one, or for the joy of offering

flowers to the glory of God. Sponsors are needed for

Sunday, February 8.

SHROVE TUESDAY PANCAKE SUPPER Come prepare

for the beginning of Lent. We will eat pancakes and lock

away the Alleluias on February 17 at 6pm in Fulford

Hall. Volunteers needed to help set up and clean up -

please see George Deare. And join us for the Ash

Wednesday services the next day (7:30am, 12:15pm,

7:00pm)

CATHEDRAL FORUM The sounding board of the

community, will meet at 6:30pm on Tuesday, February

24. This month's meeting will be held on the fourth

Tuesday of the so as not to conflict with the pancake

supper. All congregation members are invited.
