Perhaps the main reason making Tenerife such as popular holiday destination is the springtime feel to the island. The average year-round temperature is 22 degrees and locals and visitors to the island appreciate this true gift of nature.

The mild climate has created outstanding original settings and, thanks to its comfortable size (2,034 square

Tenerife’s mountain geography is the root of the island’s microclimates. The fresh wet north offers an array of vast Canary pine forests that line the mountains with a deep green hue. Laurel forests also dot several spots on this northern slope of the island - a trace of the Tertiary Period full of twisted trunks and giant ferns.

In contrast, the south is copper-toned desert terrain dotted on the coast by busy beaches - most with golden sand. The centre of the island is home to the fascinating outstanding landscape of the Teide National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.

Innovative urban development alongside picturesque villages

Avant-garde facilities and buildings have sprung up on the island in recent decades and are stylish locations for a meeting and a trip for your group. The island’s urban landscape offers a skyline of clean immensely attractive buildings such as the TEA (Tenerife Arts Centre) designed by the renowned Swiss architects Herzog and De Meuron. Santiago Calatrava designed the Tenerife Auditorium and the International Trade Fair and Conference Centre - both considered by many as architectural works of art.

A connected island

Tenerife enables to mentally disconnect from the usual working scenarios, without travelling long distances. It is only 2 hours’ flying time away from mainland Spain and 4 from the main European cities.

The 2 international airports, operates approximately 150 destinations through almost 100 different airlines.

The airport of Tenerife North is only 20 minutes away from the Puerto de la Cruz, the biggest tourist area in the north. Meanwhile, Tenerife Sur is one of the airports with more traffic in whole Spain, and is 10

minutes away from the boroughs of Arona and Adeje, the two big holiday resorts in this part of the island.

Additionally, the port of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is one of the most relevant in Spain and Europe regarding the reception of cruise ships, with more than half a million cruise passengers.

Watch dolphins amaze in their natural habitat

There are must-do trips on Tenerife such as dolphin and tropical whale watching. Families of several hundred live around the island’s southern coastline where they enjoy crystal-clear waters and the ideal temperature. Up to 21 different species of the 79 in existence can be spotted here year-round.

They live around three miles from the coast and what most surprises visitors is they can be seen close-up, just a few metres from the boat, in their natural habitat. Excursions depart from the ports of Los Cristianos, Puerto Colón and Los Gigantes.

The Teide National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site, is a dazzling immense volcanic setting at the heart of the island, just over an hour’s journey from the main towns and cities. The Teide is the third highest volcano in the world and the highest peak in Spain at 3,718 metres.

A trip to this setting, located above an almost constant cloud bank enveloping it with delicate beauty, offers visitors the chance to enjoy the extensive plains and lava flows. There are different spots to host lunches for up to 150 people. Groups can choose to travel by coach or 4x4 jeep and add hiking or orienteering activities.

As the island has one of the cleanest, clearest skies in the world, a dinner accompanied by stargazing through telescopes is a seductive activity to consider for your group.

Golf, between sophistication and relaxation

Putting a ball is a relaxing experience you can add to an incentive trip. In this sense, organising a golf tournament is surefire bet at any of the island’s eight courses. Players without the necessary handicap can take part in beginners courses or clinics with professionals on the practice courses. Here they can learn the basics without the pressure to hole the ball in a couple of strokes.

One of the things golfers most appreciate about the island, in addition to being able to play their favourite sport at any time of the year, is the variety of courses. They have been designed by international players such as Donad Steel or Severiano Ballesteros with lots of courses integrating many natural elements such as waterfalls and local vegetation, as well as offering picture postcard views over the Teide or the ocean.

Group cooking can be really fun and more so if you include it as an activity on an incentive trip. The good thing about island recipes is that they do not tend to be too elaborate so it is relatively easy to make a traditional dish. Potatoes with mojo sauce or ‘pella de gofio’ (toasted maize cakes that were a basic food for original island inhabitants) are easy to learn in just a few minutes. One local delicacy that was well-known centuries ago outside the island, especially in the UK, is the wine. Even the

brilliant William Shakespeare mentioned them in works such as The Merry Wives of Windsor and they probably helped inspire him when he was crafting his marvellous creations.

The island’s wines are grouped into five designations of origin and one way to discover them is on the ‘wine routes’, which can be organised for groups. The activity offers visitors the chance to uncover the history of the towns marked by these wines with a true volcanic spirit. You can also include stops on the tour at any traditional winery, with a tasting to boot.

The fabulous marine world

Although there are many sports to be enjoyed on the waters of Tenerife including windsurfing, kitesurfing or surfing to name just a few, one activity that probably best suits team building or groups is a sailing race. Crews, advised by experts, cooperate and have a great time working together to get the best place for their boat.

You can also choose to head out on boat trips to impressive landscapes such as Los Gigantes cliffs (up to 600 metres high), diving courses or bob diving that let you float in a transparent ocean full of sea life.

A sea conservation experience

Ever more companies are introducing a corporate social responsibility element to their meetings or incentive trips and Tenerife offers interesting options to bear in mind. This option is available for groups of 20 or for a conference with 1,000 delegates. The activities mix team work, conservation and environmental protection, social activ-ism and a whole lot of fun surrounded by nature.

A sea conservation experience

The ‘Fly Over’ project, supported by the Océano Sostenible Association and Project Aware from the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), allows par-ticipants to collaborate in regenerating a micro marine reserve while discovering the beauty of Tenerife’s seabeds. The profits go to finance marine environment protection activities.

Recovering natural spaces

The island offers the chance to work on recovering some of its deteriorated areas in collaboration with the Environmental Participation and Volunteer Office at the Council of Tenerife. Activities may vary throughout the year and include removing rubbish from nature spots to recovery work

on forest paths or the supervised release of turtles. Work days include all necessary material to carry out the activity, which is always done alongside specialised staff.

Solidarity projects

Tenerife Solidario is a programme from the Social Action Department at the Council of Tenerife to promote solidarity on the island. It is run by the public company SINPROMI (Island Company for the Promotion of People with Disabilities).

Any companies with Corporate Social Responsibility policies can collaborate and are offered different possibilities: supporting companies and associations, repairing and fitting out communal spaces, employment workshops, supporting people with disabilities or at risk of social exclusion, etc.

Montaña para Todos Association

The Montaña para Todos Association (MPT) is a non-profit company comprised solely of volunteers that is based on solidarity and bringing together those with and without disabilities. The aim is to share leisure activities in nature through adapted hill walking with a joëlette, a wheelchair designed for hill walking and on uneven terrain.

Montaña para Todos offers companies and groups visiting Tenerife the chance to offer their time and effort in helping people with disabilities. In a mutually beneficial charitable activity, they tour nature spots together which would be impossible to get to any other way.

Documentation, invitations, registration.

Try and ensure that the entire information, documentation and registration system for the event is done digitally, over the web. Tenerife Convention Bureau (TCB) offers free information on the destination so that it can be used by event organisers, such as photographs of the island or room plans.

If printed material is necessary, you can ask for it to be printed directly in Tenerife, saving transport costs for this material that tends to be heavy. We recommend using recycled paper.

Food and drink.

Ask for your event to use local seasonal products, both for food and drink. Tenerife has a wide variety of top quality natural produce and using these products is a great way to help local agriculture and cattle farming. Ask for local wine and bottled water. The quality of Tenerife’s wine is internationally recognised and this also avoids unnecessary transport costs. In terms of water, think about swapping individual bottles for water coolers. Our caterers ensure they use porcelain and crystal plates and glasses instead of plastic materials.

Waste

Request separate containers for organic, paper and plastic rubbish in all rooms and communal areas and tell attendees about the need to collaborate in this effort.

Gifts

Look for gifts that are useful and have been manufactured responsibly and from recyclable materials. Giving a locally produced gift in Tenerife helps small local industry and avoids transport costs.

As far as possible, organise transfer by bus to reduce the use of private vehicles. It is very easy to organise shuttle bus services in Tenerife thanks to the short distance between hotels with conference centres and airports.

The Pirámide de Arona is located in the Mare Nostrum Resort in Playa de Las Américas and has a large auditorium, 18 meeting rooms and a 1,300 square metre exhibition space.

The auditorium has a large 200 square metre stage and comes equipped with the latest audiovisual technology. Thanks to its 1,800 person capacity and design, the centre is able to fully adapt to the needs of any corporate image.
