■ Le Château de Santenay
■ Le Mont de Sène
Nestled amidst famed vineyards and preserved landscapes of the southern Côte de Beaune, Santenay represents Burgundy’s very art of living. The people there have always succeeded in maintaining the high-quality standard of the community. Not only for their own good, of course, but for yours, too.You will appreciate it either with a wine glass in your hand during a cellar tasting of red and white local wines, or at a Chapter of the Brotherhood of the Grumeurs of Santenay. Vintners will lead you to the delight of ever-renewed fl avours that spring up from the glasses, like the ones that can be found at the tables of local chefs.Another way to appreciate it would be to cross the village and walk the hillside paths that lead to Mont de Sène; and, to walk or ride or even roller-skate along the ones that mirror into the Canal du Centre or go through the vineyards. You will be amazed by Romanesque Saint-Jean de Narosse Church, built against a stone amphitheatre, or by the turn of the Sorine mill’s blades; or, by just contemplating the sun’s playing with the varnished tiles of Philip the Hardy Castle. You will get thrilled by Casino games and take a refreshing bathe at the pool. The friendliness shown by Santenay inhabitants will help you share this art of living, be that in a hotel, a bed & breakfast, at the camp site or in the local stores. Welcome
St-Jean de Narosse Church Built down the cliff in the late thirteenth century A. D. in a charming place that shapes an amphitheatre overlooked by Mont de Sène, Saint-Jean de Narosse Church was listed as a historical monument in 1926. Its choir is of Gothic style since it was rebuilt later on, in the late fi fteenth century A. D.
Inside, solid walls have helped preserve beautiful polychromatic wooden statues as well as an alabaster sculpture of ‘Virgin with Child and Killing the Dragon’.
The Church can be visited year-round by appointment to the Tourist Offi ce.phone : 03 80 20 63 15
The Sorine MillEvery fall since 1995 the Sorine Mill has been accommodating a milling show. The mill overlooks the vineyards . Having been restored and now in full operating condition, it is started whenever wind rushes into its blades.
The Sorine Mill can be visited year-round by appointment to the Tourist Offi ce. The Milling Show takes place every June.Phone : 03 80 20 63 15
Santenay CastleAlthough the roofs in fl amboyant varnished tiles are recent, they are typical of Burgundian style, like the roofs of the Hospices de Beaune are. A. k. a. Philip the Hardy Castle, Santenay Castle was built in the fourth century A. D. on the site of a former castrum. Turned into a fortress in the fourteenth century A. D., and surrounded by moats from then on, it now shelters a wine estate.
Mont de SèneOr the “Three Crosses” (1709 ft - 521 m)
A former Celtic and Roman worship place, Mont de Sène provides hikers with a fantastic viewpoint: to the East, they can see the Saône River, the Jura, the Alps and even the Mont Blanc whenever the weather is clear; and to the West, the Hautes-Côtes de Beaune. Mont de Sène has now become the privileged turf of hikers and gliding fl ight lovers.

Canal du CentreThanks to the Canal du Centre built by engineer Emiland Gauthey between 1783 thru 1793 A. D., you can sail into Santenay. The canal played a major role in the economic growth of the Santenay vicinity. Yachts have now replaced barges. Along the Canal, a nautical stop has been established near the centre of the village in order to accommodate vacationers in the best possible conditions. It faces the vineyards end and offers a nice frame of greenery there.

TastingIn the southern Côte de Beaune, the wines of Santenay epitomize the very idea of Burgundy’s terroir. The varieties grown there, that is Pinot noir for the reds -a majority- and Chardonnay for the whites, show their respective characters, following various patterns due to their rank, terroir, aspect and, last but not least, grower.
To the South of the appellation, near the Maranges, the reds come robust and full-bodied and reveal deep red fruit scents of blackcurrant and raspberries. Wines that are made from the fi elds abutting on Chassagne-Montrachet seduce wine lovers with their natural elegance and fi nesse. But all of them will keep and age so smoothly as to then unveil intricate fl avours that set the landmark of great Burgundy wines.
Santenay village and Premier Cru reds match with traditional cooking as well as today’s cuisine, while the fat and rich yet beautifully fresh whites will drink perfectly along fi sh or white meat.
Local growers are inviting you to taste the diversity and richness of their wines. About 40 estates hold and work some 1136 acres -460 ha- of land of the Santenay appellation, out of which 296 acres -120 ha- are classifi ed as Premiers Crus.
Among Santenay’s most sought-after Premiers Crus are Les Gravières, La Comme, Clos de Tavanne, Beauregard, Passetemps, Beaurepaire, La Maladière, Clos Rousseau, Clos Faubard and Clos des Mouches.
