to an older generation and to a socie-ty where the family is the mostimportant aspect while the individualdid not matter. The film captures thefathers inner conflict when he fightswith his own self to allow his son to

    Campaigning at grass-

    roots,fund-raising, or-ganizing social gather-

ings, community discussions,debate-watching parties, phone calls to voters theyworked tirelessly since Feb-ruary last year to get theirleader to win Democratic Par-ty nomination.

And now, as Barack Oba-ma gets into the second and fi-nal leg of the campaigning forUS Presidency, these secondgeneration Gujaratis will beas much a part of his effortsand even more as members ofSouth Asians For Obama(SAFO) a grassroots move-ment to mobilize the southAsian community in the USto support.

Anhoni Patel, chair of theBay Area chapter of SAFOand the national media chairand spokesperson for thegroup, says, I felt exhilarat-ed and extremely proud thatI was a part of this historiceffort. When my future chil-dren and grandchildren willask me about this time in ourpolitical history, I will be ableto say I was a part of helpingthe first African-American tobecome the nominee of a ma- jor party.

Obamas Yes we can! con-fidence reflects in 25-year-oldAvani Bhatt, a member of LawStudents for Obama.I felt ec-static when he won the nom-ination. But, the real feelingthat washed over me was oneof hope. This one man hasmobilized Americans to notsimply ask but demandchange, she says.

Thirty-one-year-old Sid-dharth Desai,a managementconsultant at Accenture based out of Atlanta worked extensively with theGeorgia Obama campaign andis a member of ObamasAsian American and PacificIslander Council. The greatthing about this campaign isthat I feel connected to peopleI never met we all worked

together to achieve our firstof two big goals. The secondgoal will hopefully be accom-plished in November,he says.

The young NRGs now lookforward to getting thousandsof people across the countryinvolved in the politicalprocess. One great strengthof the campaign is that sena-tor Obama found support frompeople who have never par-

ticipated in politics. Many peo-ple only tune in when itsdown to final selected candi-dates, says Bhatt.

I will spend time regis-tering new voters, buildingunity within the Democraticparty and speaking with vot-ers about Obama, says Patel.

I will do everything with-in my capacity to convincepeople that senator Obama isthe right choice, come No-v em be r, s ay s D es ai .Whether its door-to-door can-vassing or fundraising,to me,the task at hand has notchanged. That has alwaysbeen for Senator Obama towin the Presidency, not justthe Democratic Party nomi-nation and I am confident thatwe will get there, he adds.

The tragedy of keeping up withthe Jones is, 'we spend moneythat we do not have, to getthings that we do not need, to

impress people we do not like'.What dowe do for the people we love? Notenough.

In a world that is more connected, thetragedy is that we communicate evenless. Parents with teenagers will surelyagree that we spend more timeengaging with the TV, than we spendtalking to our children. We may justifythis by asking, 'why should we spendtime with children who value theirfriends more than they value us?'

Parents need to see the importance ofspending quality time with theirchildren, and to be there for them as theynegotiate some of life's changes andchallenges. This is the time that they

need all the help they can get, eventhough teenagers act like they do notneed any help.

Career choices, exam pressure, unstablerelationships, and the need to move fromone stage to another - teenager to adult- are all reasons why children getconfused, and sometimes depressed.

How do we realise whether we arespending enough time with the family? Are there any red flags that we can watchout for?

Today's children are open enough tospeak their minds. Do not treat somecomments lightly - such as,'are you really

going to come for my graduation?', or,'how do you expect me to believe you?'

Changes in patterns - sleep, Internet, sports and games, reading and listeningto music - will provide a clear indicatorthat things are changing. Too oftenparents try to ignore this stage byfocusing on some other issue, likecollege, friends, and issues that do not

even concern them. Children findthis strange and escapist, and willrespond accordingly. If this stage isnot addressed adequately, the child'sself esteem gets messed up,and theylose their self worth.Loss of interestin things that are normally liked bythem is a clear sign of change, andpossibly indicative of greateramount of change to come.

WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT THIS?

Do not evaluate things from thebenchmark reference of your time asa teenager. Things have changeddramatically since then.Call a familycouncil.S eat all the members of the

family round the table, and present themwith the issue that you would like todiscuss and resolve.Discuss openly, andget a solution that is agreeable foreveryone. If they do not easily speak theirmind, then do request someone else tofigure things out on your behalf - anuncle, aunt or cousin,or even their best

    friends.

Stay in touch with the educationalinstitution. They will be able to map thechanges in your teenager, without bias, and probably better than you can.Checkwith other family members or friendswho are close to your children, they willknow a lot more than you do.That's justthe way it is.

Give them respect. They may not respectthemselves at this stage, but they feel

confident that their parents will notlaugh at,or ridicule them. Give trust andspace.Children require a certain amountof freedom. They do not like being talkedabout or sniggered at. Trust them andmore often than not, the youth willreciprocate accordingly.Understand thatthis is a passing phase and will pass.

Accidents or medicalemergenies can strikeanyone at any time. Ifeffective medical care ispromptly deliveredduring this criticalperiod, many lives couldbe saved. Read on tolearn the importance ofefficient, promptmedical assistance

Medical care during emergenciesin India leaves a lot to bedesired. Those of us who watch

medical shows on television (such as ER)are very impressed with the high qualityof care emergency rooms the USprovides. In India, unfortunately, the

reality is far grimmer. If there is anaccident, most of us prefer not gettinginvolved. If we do try to help the victimby rushing him to the nearest localhospital, the doctor there may refuse totreat the patient and tell us totransfer him to a governmenthospital. Many victims diebecause simple medicalproblems (such as bleeding)are not treated on time.Doctors know that during amedical emergency (forexample,a traffic accidentor a heart attack),there isa 'golden hour' whichcan literally spell the

differencebetween lifeand death. If effectivemedical care is promptlydelivered efficiently during this criticalperiod, many lives could be saved. However, traffic accidents remain a

distressingly common cause ofpreventable death in India.

Given the state of ourroads and our civicsense, this problem isgoing to keep onincreasing unless wetackle it efficiently.

    OUR EMERGENCYSYSTEM

If you see an accident andthe person is bleeding

profusely, the first humaninstinct is to rush the patient to

the local hospital for emergencymedical care;or call for an

ambulance. However, the nearestmedical facility could be your local

    nursinghome or hospital,many of which

will refuse to admit these patients.Patients are then shunted off losingvaluable time - and possibly their lives,

in the process. Not that large privatehospitals are much better. Many do noteven have a well-equipped casualtyward (ER);and even if they do,theyrefuse to take on the patient, untilpayment is first made. It's true that doctors have an ethicalobligation to treat any patient -especially during an emergency. However, many refuse to do so. The sadtruth is that many often don't have theexpertise or equipment to do so or theyare worried about police hassles.Accident and emergency cases areoften medicolegal cases, and theseentail the burden of a lot of paperwork. While some are worried about who willpay for this medical care (which can beexpensive),others arefearful that if they try

to help and the patientdies, the mob will venttheir anger on thedoctor and beat himup. It's often mucheasier for the doctor todo nothing.
