Remembrance of Names

Because our beloved departed have enshrined themselves deeply in our hearts - because their lives were a benediction to us - because through the nobility of their living, and the royalty of their character, they inspired us to live worthily and nobly - the dead, whose souls we commemorate today, shall not glide swiftly into the depths of oblivion. We shall hold them long in cherished and consecrated memory.

We inscribe their names in this Memorial Booklet as a token of our everlasting love and affection.

CONGREGATION: May the merciful Father who dwells on high, in His infinite mercy, remember those saintly, upright and blameless souls, the holy communities who offered their lives for the sanctification of the Divine Name. They were lovely and amiable in their life, and were not parted in their death. They were swifter than eagles and stronger than lions to do the will of their Master and the desire of their Stronghold. May our God remember them favorably among the other righteous of the world; may He avenge the blood of His servants which has been shed, as it is written in the Torah of Moses, the man of God: “O nations, make His people joyful! He avenges the blood of His servants, renders retribution to His foes, and provides atonement for His land and His people.” And by Thy servants, the prophets, it is written: “I will avenge their blood which I have not yet avenged; the Lord dwells in Zion.” And in the holy writings it is said: “Why should the nations say, ̒ Where then is their God?ʼ Let the vengeance for Thy servantsʼ blood that is shed be made known among the nations in our sight.” And it is said: “The Avenger of bloodshed remembers them; He does not forget the cry of the humble.” And it is further said: “He will execute judgment upon the nations and fill [the battle-field] with corpses; He will shatter the [enemyʼs] head over all the wide earth. Some have the custom to visit the grave on the yahrzeit and recite psalms and the E-l Maleh Rachamim there.

One is obligated to observe the yahrzeit of parents only. This is in keeping with the Torah’s notion that honoring parents is a mitzvah not only while they are still alive, but even after their death. However, one can observe the yahrzeit of other relatives, especially if they have nobody to observe it.

The yahrzeit in the vast majority of cases is observed on the Hebrew date of the passing of the relative. In unusual cases a rabbi should be consulted to assist in calculating the proper date of observance.

By honoring the memories of our beloved parents and relatives through the observance of the ancient traditions, we hope to bring z’chut (merit) to their souls. As we recite the Yizkor service today, may Hashem hear our prayers and elevate our loved ones “al kanfei Hashechina,” upon His sheltering wings, for eternity.

children’s continued dedication and pursuit of good deeds impacts greatly and influences the outcome of their judgment. This annual judgment plays a large role in how we observe the yahrzeit.

Observing the yahrzeit is an ancient tradition among the Jewish people. In the Talmud it is considered to be a somber day. The earliest traditions have the yahrzeit as a fast day for the children of the deceased. In the Sephardic communities it is still observed as a Yom Tzom, a fast day. Other guidelines for its observance are as follows:

A candle is lit in the home of those observing the yahrzeit. It should be lit on the eve going into the day of yahrzeit. It should continue to burn the entire day and go out on its own. There is a strong scriptural link between the human soul and the flame of a candle.

It is considered a sad day and as a consequence some level of mourning should be observed. It is therefore customary not to attend a wedding or a festive occasion on that day.

Kaddish should be recited on the yahrzeit. If possible, sons should lead the services on that day.

Both sons and daughters should give tzedakah (charity) in their parent’s name.

It is customary to study Mishnah texts on the yahrzeit, preferably selections from Seder Taharoth.

It is also customary to receive an aliyah to the Torah on the day or the day closest to the yahrzeit. It is also the custom to have the E-l Maleh Rachamim recited on the yahrzeit or the day of Torah reading closest to the yahrzeit.

and relatives who have passed on, but to also remember their good deeds and noble character traits. This will serve as an impetus for us, the living, to emulate them.

To mark the anniversary of an important event is natural. The anniversary of the passing of someone near and cherished is no exception. It evokes bittersweet emotions. Echoes of voices long ago silenced are still heard. The giggles and laughs as well as other sounds can be relived in the mind. Images of experiences once shared are again animated. Special gestures and unique idiosyncrasies are remembered and especially vivid when thought about on the yahrzeit. We recall special occasions and relive times of sadness as well. Perhaps those last months, weeks, and days before their passing are once again thought about. Many memories flood the mind. It can be a highly charged emotional experience even after many years, or even decades, have passed.

But the yahrzeit of a loved one is more than just a time for memories and some sadness. It is an opportunity that we have to reestablish connections that transcend time and space. We create a link by engaging in an ongoing sense of responsibility to those we love - even beyond the grave. Our deceased parents are sometimes judged by our actions and deeds. If we live refined and proper lives then it confers merit to them. To some degree they are rewarded for the fine qualities which they transmitted to us.

The Talmudic tradition teaches us that the initial judgment of our parents takes place within the first year of death. As the year passes hopefully the soul ascends higher and nearer to G-d. However, our tradition also teaches that each year on the anniversary of their death, the souls are judged once again. If through their good works while they were alive, the positive effects continue to make an impression, then the award accrues to the soul of the deceased. In effect there is a new “Din”, judgment, on the yahrzeit. The

Yizkor and Yahrzeit:Memorializing our Loved Ones

One of the basic principles of the Jewish faith is our belief that life is eternal. Judaism teaches that the human personality lives beyond the grave, and that G-d recalls those who have lived and grants them perfect tranquility in the world to come, Olam Habah. Though our understanding of Olam Habah is limited by our physical boundaries, its reality is a fundamental precept of our tradition. The physical co-exists with the spiritual, and this world is but a link to Olam Habah.

We are taught that our deeds and our prayers in this world impact the souls of our loved ones in the world beyond. Our tradition guides us to memorialize our loved ones four times a year with the recitation of Yizkor, and also on the yahrzeit, the anniversary of their passing. Through the observance of these customs, the veil that separates the living from the dead is parted, and the souls of our mothers, fathers, and other loved ones are rejoined with us, the living.

On every major Jewish holiday the Yizkor prayer is tearfully intoned. Its focus is to memorialize and elevate the souls of the deceased. As part of the service, we pledge charity in the hope that our mitzvah will help bring merit to them. An integral part of Yizkor is to remember not only how much we miss our parents
