Last Friday the Pioneer lacrosse team traveled to Dexter for a match. Although the game was tied for much of the first three quarter, Pioneerbroke away in the fourth, winning 10-6.

    For three quarters

of Friday nights gamebetween Dexter andPioneer, the two boyslacrosse teams were prettymuch equal.

However, in the fourthquarter the Pioneers brokeaway, not only dashingDreadnaughts hopes of ashocking upset, but alsogiving further credenceto the Pioneers top fiveranking.

After entering the fourthquarter with the score tied

at 5-5, the Pioneers scoredfive unanswered goals inthe final quarter, eventu-ally winning the game 10-6.

We played hard,Pioneer coach JamesCorey said. We playedthree pretty mediocrequarters and one good one,so it was nice to get a win.

The Pioneer coach saidhe didnt feel like his teamplayed up to its potentialin the first three quartersof the game, however, hesaid that the Dreadnaughtsplayed a huge part inkeeping his team off of its

    THE PICTURE OF EXECUTION:

Pioneer perfectionDuring Friday nightsgame against Dexter, theDreadnaught lacrosseteam was giving thePioneers all that theycould handle.

Despite being rankedNo. 4 in the state, thePioneers were unable toever really build a leadagainst the upstart Dexterteam.

In fact, early in the sec-ond half, the Pioneers hadnever held more than aone-goal lead.

    Then, with about five

and a half minutes left inthe third quarter, Pioneercoach James Corey calleda time out to calm histeam down.

Just relax,he said tohis squad. Im yelling at

you too much or something.Youre too nervous, OK?

Were going to do this littlecalm thing, OK? Whatwere going to do is score a

goal right now. Just takeyour time and relax. Itsfive yards and were goingto clear. Were going to goSyracuse. Were going to seta pick for Kevin (Grupe).

Kevins going to run acrossand shoot low. Kevins

going to score. Its going tobe really special.

The coachs matter-of-fact tone was not lost onhis team, who promptlywent out and executed

their coachs play toperfection, as Grupescored the goal to put thePioneers up 5-4.

The goal was a turningpoint as the Ann Arborteam went on to outscoreDexter 5-2 for the rest ofthe game to win 10-6.

Playing formore respectBy Mike LarsonA2 Journal

The DexterDreadnaughts werent ableto escape with a win Fridaynight when they hosted thePioneer lacrosse team.

However, they left thegame with something that,in the long run, might bemore important.

The defeatedDreadnaughts walked offtheir grass field Friday

without a win, but with therespect of the Pioneers, aprogram ranked No. 4 inthe state.

They have come a longway, Pioneer assistantcoach Gil Leaf said of theDexter team. That coachthey have over there is onto something.

That coach in question isBrian Callanan.

In his second year ascoach of the Dexter team,as squad that is in just itssecond season of varsitycompetition, Callanan hasmade Dexter a power.

Going into the gameagainst Pioneer, the Dreadswere 11-0.

However, the teamhadnt played any highly-ranked opponents, whichcalled their undefeated

record into question. On Friday though, evenin a loss, the Dreadnaughtsput any questions abouttheir improvement to rest.

And nobody recognizedthat more than Pioneercoach James Corey.

Ill be honest, I neverthought Dexter stood achance.

I thought theDreadnaughts had beenflying under the radar allseason. I figured when

Dexter took the field againstPioneer Friday, the reallacrosse team, the one wear-ing purple, was going toteach the Dreads a few les-sons about the game.

Sure, Dexter was 11-0going into the game, buthaving never seen the teamplay, I wasnt impressed.

I saw the teams they hadplayed. Yeah, they put updouble digit goals againstLincolnbut come on, itsLincoln.

I fully expected thePioneers to pretty muchsmash Dexter. It would bethe first really good teamthe Dreadnaughts had faced,

and I figured Dexter wouldbe exposed as the immatureteam that it must be.

I was wrong. In fact, I was way wrong.Dexter not only played

well, they gave the Pioneersall they could handle.

In the end, the Ann Arborteam won 10-6, but the gamewas tied 5-5 at the start ofthe fourth quarter.

In other words, for threequarter, Dexter played equalto Pioneer.

Now, in all fairness to thePioneers, they didnt playvery well at the start of thegame.

    Pioneer player Kevin

Grupe, who scored threegoals in the game, said histeam came out flat.

The Pioneers, who playmost of their games on turf,
