« Au départ, la piste Yellow Quill (Yellow Quill Trail) a été utilisée par les Premières nations comme route
commerciale. À mesure que l’influence européenne s’est faite sentir dans le sud-ouest du Manitoba, les
explorateurs, les commerçants de fourrures (fur traders) et les chasseurs de bison (buffalo hunters) de la
colonie de la Rivière-Rouge ont réalisé que la piste était pratique aussi pour se déplacer. » (trad.)
La piste Carlton, de Fort Garry à Edmonton : « de quelque 900 milles depuis la Fourche jusqu’à Upper Fort
des Prairies à Edmonton. Plus tard, elle s’est appelée la Great Highway (la grande route), selon une carte
de 1874 ». « La piste Carlton permit de relier Fort Garry sur la rivière Rouge à Upper Fort des Prairies
(aujourd’hui Edmonton). La piste Yellow Quill partait de la piste Carlton à ce qui correspond aujourd’hui à
Portage-la-Prairie et allait vers le sud-ouest jusqu’à la piste de la Commission des frontières, juste avant la
frontière actuelle de la Saskatchewan. » (trad.)
Piste Fort Ellice : La section de la piste Carlton menant de Fort Garry à Saint-Francois-Xavier s’appelait la
piste Fort Ellice.
Piste Crow Wing : route commerciale reliant la colonie de la Rivière-Rouge du Fort Garry (aujourd’hui
Winnipeg), au Manitoba, à St. Paul, au Minnesota.

Piste Pembina : « arrivait ... à l’extrémité de la partie navigable du fleuve Mississippi. Ces anciennes routes
commerciales allaient de Fort Garry vers le Sud, au Dakota du Nord jusqu’à Saint Paul sur le fleuve
Mississippi. ... La charrette de la rivière Rouge (surnommée le Pembina Buggy) représenta l’étape
suivante de l’évolution du transport. Elle avait été inventée par les Nor’-westers. Elle avait d’abord été
utilisée par les Métis au cours de leurs déplacements pour la chasse au bison. En 1820, on estimait à 540
le nombre de charrettes dans la Rivière-Rouge. » (trad.)
