des conversations et des dialogues qui se sont poursuivis à Londres et à Paris. Ces discussions rassemblent la

plupart des grands thèmes que Francis Bacon n'a cessé de ressasser sa vie durant : son travail, Picasso,

Velazquez, ses amitiés, ses voyages, ses lectures, l'alcool...

Francis Bacon moved into 7 Reece Mews in London's South Kensington in 1961. It was to remain his principal

home and studio until his death in 1992. Prior to the removal of the studio to the Hugh Lane Municipal

Gallery of Modern Art in Dublin in 1998, access was granted to photographer Perry Ogden to produce this

record of the house and its contents. He captured every part of the small building's hidden and untouched

interior. In the studio itself, thirty years of artistic endeavor had accumulated unchecked: the slashed,

discarded canvases scattered across the floor; the brushes, rags and tins encrusted with paint; the doors and

walls used as impromptu palettes; the piles of photographs of friends and models; the crumpled and torn

pages of magazines and books that served as visual stimulus for his work; the notes, sketches and ideas

jotted down and then cast aside; the last unfinished painting on the easel. For some of those close to Bacon

in his lifetime, the studio was an heroic statement, a work of art in its own right, created over many years to

distil and give form to his aesthetic intentions. Now in this astonishing book, we are invited to take a

privileged look around his private space, to become intimate witnesses to the amazing conditions in which

he lived and worked, to gain unrivalled insights into how, why and what he painted.

Published in 1996, Francis Bacon: Anatomy of an Enigma was the first in-depth study of the artist's life. It has

not been superseded. In this substantially revised, updated edition - to coincide with the artist's centenary,

which will be celebrated from autumn 2008 through summer 2009. Peppiatt will incorporate confidential

material Bacon gave him, which he did not include in the first edition. This valuable, first-hand information

comes from the hundreds of conversations Bacon had with Peppiatt, often late into the night, over thirty

years, particularly during the periods Bacon spent living and working in Paris. It includes insights into Bacon's

intimate relationships, his artistic convictions and his general view of life, as well as his acerbic comments on

Twenty years after the artist's death, this new publication presents a timely and rich overview of the life and

work of Francis Bacon. The book includes some 60 paintings as well as photographs, ephemera and archival

material largely drawn from the artist's studio. An introduction and four essays by international experts look

at specific aspects of Bacon's work, from detailed analysis of archival material to a study of the influences of

Marcel Duchamp. The paintings divide into a thematic chronology of five decades: the 1940s, which looks at

the figure studies closely related to Bacon's famous Three studies for figures at the base of a crucifixion; the

1950s, where his work is informed by Velázquez and van Gogh, but is also dominated by ambiguous,

shadowy figures in somber tones; the 1960s and 70s, which focus on the portraits and subsequent

memorials to Bacon's lover George Dyer, who died in 1971; the 1980s, while calmer and more naturalistic,

reveal more haunted works which make reference to classical mythology and epic poetry. Each decade is

defined by influences in his life and motifs which form part of an evolving pictorial language.

With their searing colors and dramatically contorted figures, the paintings of Francis Bacon compel

attention. Unlike most painters of his generation, who preferred to investigate the rigors of abstraction, the

75-yearS-old Bacon has devoted his skills to portraying the human body. The power and magnitude of his

life's work are vividly conveyed by this thorough evaluation written by Hugh Davies, director of the La Jolla

Museum of Contemporary Art, and art historian Sally Yard. Born in Dublin, as a teenager Bacon moved to

London, where he worked as an interior designer and taught himself to paint. Responding to influences as

diverse as Michelangelo and the photographer Muybridge, he has created a motion-filled style uniquely his

own. Fascinated by the challenge of capturing what he calls "the mysteries of appearance," Bacon confronts

Francis Bacon (19091992) was renowned for his dramatic depictions of the human form; he portrayed the

ordeal of the vulnerable, defenselessly exposed body like no other artist of his generation. This book

presents about sixty of Bacon’s disturbing yet captivating studies of the human figure, encompassing works

from the late 1940s until his death.

Throughout his career, Francis Bacon made many anti-religious and, more specifically, anti-Christian

statements. Bacon was a militant atheist but his atheism was not a simple dismissal of religion and religious

belief. He exploited the symbols of Christianity, especially the Crucifixion and the Pope, in order to show

their gap with the modern age. Setting out the account for Bacon’s recurrent and sustained use of religious

symbols, Rina Arya explains how the artist redeployed religious iconography to convey an experience of the

human condition of animalism and mortality. By placing the work within the context of post-war
