    How to Measure

  • 2

Measuring Tape Requirements Purpose A tape measure is a necessary audit tool and is the basis for confirming actual

garment measurements against specified measurements at various stages of the manufacturing process.

Description The best tape measure to use is a metal tape measure, as it does not tend to

    stretch or distort.

Requirements Comply with the following requirements when using tape measures:

No. Requirement 1 If using non metal measuring tapes, ensure that the tape is

calibrated against a long metal ruler on a monthly basis. Note: Allocate one standard tape measure to be used for calibration only. This tape measure must be used to calibrate all tape measures.

2 All tape measure digits must be clearly legible. 3 Tape measure must be straight and free of tattered or damaged

edges. 4 All metal stops must be intact.

    Alternate Measuring Tool

Metal templates are an excellent source for measuring. They must be checked weekly for bent or damaged edges or surfaces. All sewing guides, gauges, and templates should be checked weekly or any time off specification measurements are noted during the manufacturing process

    Unacceptable Measuring Tools

Cardboard or any masking tape is not ideal material for measuring as both damage and wear easily. Humid climates tend to further deteriorate the cardboard and tape more rapidly.

Note: Always follow how to measure guides found in the specification packages or

    as outlined in this manual.

How to Measure Knit and Woven Products

Introduction This section describes the various ways to measure woven and knit garments.

Each illustration will have an illustration number next to it. Please refer to these illustration numbers when referencing corresponding spec instructions.

Note: This section combines knits and wovens. Areas of measure have been color coded as follows:

Text appearing in red pertains to knits only. Text appearing in blue pertains to wovens only. Text appearing in black pertains to both knits and wovens. Refer to the yyeellllooww hhiigghhlliigghhtteedd aarrrroowwss for specific locations of measure.

Abbreviations The following abbreviations are applicable to items described in this chapter:

Abbreviation Description HSP: High Shoulder Point

The highest point of measure on the garment where natural fold of shoulder intersects neck joining seam or neck edge, regardless of the neck seam or shoulder edge.

SSNP: Shoulder Seam at Neck Point

The point of measure on the garment at the shoulder seam intersection of neck seam or neck edge.
