“Time”… it’s a ticking!

Il est…

If you want to give a certain time, begin with “il est…” – Remember “il est” means “it is”

Follow “il est” with the hour and then any minutes.Il est dix heures – il est 10h (it is 10:00)Il est une heure– il est 1h (it is 1:00)Il est huit heures– il est 8h (it is 8:00)Il est six heures dix– il est 6h10 (it is 6:10)

** NOTE: DO NOT include the word MINUTES!!!**

NOTICE: The word “heure” is FEMININE, therefore, you MUST say “une” heure instead of “un” heure!!

Les expressions specialesTo say that it is noon, use the word “midi”

Mi = mid Di= day

To express the idea of midnight, use “minuit” Mi= mid Nuit = night

To say :15 – use “et quart” following “heures” 5:15 = il est cinq heures et quart

To say :30 – use “et demie” following “heures” 7:30= il est sept heures et demie

En français, if the time is after :30, you MUST… round up to the next hour then SUBTRACT the minutes from “60” (Use the word “MOINS” to mean minus. )5:50

10:35 Il est onze heures MOINS vingt-cinq (11:00 - 25 minutes)

6:40 Il est sept heures MOINS vingt (7:00 – 20 minutes)
