    Treatment of Chikungunya Disease

There is no antiviral drug or medicine specifically for Chikungunya. But since chikungunya is cured by immun

system in almost all cases there is no need to worry. Treatment usually is for the symptoms and include taki

sufficient rest, taking more fluid food and medicines to relieve pain (paracetamol for example). Aspirin should

    avoided.

Honey and lime mix is found to have soothing effect on the disease. Avoiding specific medicines is actua

recommended for quick recovery. Also very mild exercise to joints can help ease the pain.

Currently there is no vaccination against Chikungunya. Research is ongoing on the development of DN

    vaccination against Chikungunya.

Usually the disease starts to decrease in intensity after 3 days and it may take up to 2 weeks for recovery. B

in elderly the recovery is very slow and may take upto 3 months. In some cases the joint pain can last eve

    upto a year!

    Group: Group IV ((+)ssRNA)

    Family: Togaviridae

    Genus: Alphavirus

    Species: Chikungunya virus

Chikungunya (in the Makonde language "that which bends up") virus (CHIKV) is an insect-borne virus

of the genus Alphavirus, that is transmitted to humans by virus-carryingAedesmosquitoes.[1]

    There have

been recent breakouts of CHIKV associated with severe illness. CHIKV causes an illness with symptomsimilar to dengue fever. CHIKV manifests itself with an acute febrile phase of the illness lasting only tw

to five days, followed by a prolonged arthralgic disease that affects the joints of the extremities. The painassociated with CHIKV infection of the joints persists for weeks or months, or in some cases years.[2][3]

    Signs and symptoms

The incubation period of Chikungunya disease is from two to five days. Symptoms of the disease includea fever up to 40 C (104 F), apetechial ormaculopapularrash of the trunk and occasionally the limbs,

and arthralgia or arthritis affecting multiple joints.[4] Othernonspecific symptoms can include headache, conjunctival Infection, and slightphotophobia. Typically, the fever lasts for two days and then ends

abruptly. However, other symptomsnamely joint pain, intense headache, insomnia and an extremedegree of prostrationlast for a variable period; usually for about 5 to 7 days.

    [4]Patients have complaine

of joint pains for much longer time periods; some as long as 2 years, depending on their age.[5][6]

    [edit] Diagnosis

Common laboratory tests for chikungunya include RT-PCR, virus isolation, and serological tests.

y Virus isolation provides the most definitive diagnosis but takes 12 weeks for completion and must be carrieout in Biosafety level 3 laboratories.

[7]The technique involves exposing specific cell lines to samples from

whole blood and identifying chikungunya virus-specific responses.

y RT-PCR using nested primer pairs to amplify several Chikungunya-specific genes from whole blood. Results cbe determined in 12 days.

    [7]

ySerological diagnosis requires a larger amount of blood than the other methods and uses an ELISA assay tomeasure Chikungunya-specific IgM levels. Results require 23 days and false positives can occur with infectio

via other related viruses such as O'nyong'nyong virus and Semliki Forest Virus
