AWARD SELFMATES 1958

During 1958 our various columns presented 42 correct selfmatesin comparison with pr~ious years a gratifying progress Fortunately this progress was illusshytrated too in the general standardalthoughon the other sidea rather large pershycentage of the compositions submitted was of rather poor quality Some other comshypositions lacked originality and it can be said that also in this field it becomes exceedingly difficult to present new ideas

After careful study I selected the problems mentioned underneath

1st Prize AH 1336 KAKLarsen A most original selfmate of exceptshyional difficulty The white ~ueen and the white Bishop on e2 are the star-performersand it wi 11 be seen that in the main set-variation and the three var i at ions after the key these two figures alternativshyely occupy the squares a2 and c2 Furthermore it should be mentioned that besides two changed continuations in this complete blockthe surprisinq key allows a fl ight to the black King one of the most beautiful selfmates I have ever seen

2nd Prize AH 1279 GThomas The white haHpin in the selfmate dates from 1911Sbut only a few outshystand ing compos i t ions ere krown Here we have anextremely cleshyver example where the half pi nshyposition s caused by the key The changed continuation after e6 is a surprising additshyion to a very difficult theme

1st H M AH 1216 OFaria amp OROsaThe Il promotions of a black pawn can be differentiated without great difficulty in a selfmate A1ready in middot 1913 the famous composer pauly showed S proshymotions by a si ngle pawn on two squares and 13 years 1ashyter orBettmann gave his W-dlshyknown illustration of the Babson-taskwhere the Il black promotions are en~ountered by Il equal white onesOn account of the following factors I have included this prOblem in the award a)in one variation only the new black piece disshyappears from the board b) in each variation we see a quiet white move c) the position of the white King on the 8th 1 i ne

Amongst the 27 problems submitted for judgment Lam 294 and Hab 350 were disshyQualified on account of cooks Although many problems showed interesting features it must be pointed out that there was not a single work of outstanding value Conse~uently
