The parent body of Thornleigh West is represented by the Thornleigh West Parents and Citizens Association (P&C).The P&C helps to support and enhance our children's education byproviding teaching aids and equipment and education programs nototherwise supplied by the Department of Education.

P&C Meetings are held two Tuesday evenings each term in WeekThree and Eight respectively. These meetings are a forum for positivediscussion on how we can accomplish the goals we set jointly withthe school to develop our children's educational experience. Themeetings are conducted in a friendly and cooperative manner andare attended by many parents as well as the school principal.

Within the P&C there are 6 committees - Band, Canteen, Before andAfter School Care, Mothers Day Fathers Day Gift Group, Hall andFundraising Committee. These committees are represented at eachmeeting and report to the P&C Executive.

The P&C at TWPS has a total annual turnover of over $200,000made up of voluntary subscriptions, donations, communityfundraising, canteen contributions, band fees and so on. These fundsprovide for and enhance the excellent education received by ourchildren and financially support programmes within the school suchas Before and After School Care, French for all children, LearningSupport, Drama Enrichment Program, Wakakirri and Dance, acomprehensive Music Program through the four Bands and our“Healthy Choice” Canteen - to name a few. As well, the P&C supplynumerous classroom resources such as reading materials, interactivewhite boards and other digital equipment. The P&C also contribute to

the maintenance and enhancement of the beautiful grounds we allappreciate at Thornleigh West and are involved in a number ofcharitable activities.

This year our fundraisers and social events have included : MothersDay gift stall, Fathers Day breakfast, Cake Stalls, Easter Raffle, TriviaNight, Annual Yuletide Dinner and Auction, and very importantly ourmuch enjoyed Community Spring Fair.

Some other accomplishments achieved over recent years by havingan active, strong and supportive P&C are: fully networked computersin classrooms, our technology centre which provides a computer forevery child to use, sports equipment, updated amphitheatre as wellas upgraded electricity and air conditioning.

It has been found that children whose parents are involved in theircommunities become involved themselves. Our P&C is active, strongand supportive and we have fun achieving, and often exceeding, ourfundraising targets. Our main concern is our children's education in ahappy and safe environment and we work together towards this goal.We encourage a friendly, inclusive, community atmosphere ineverything we do and feel this is also very important to our children.

The P&C communicates with the wider school community throughthe school's weekly newsletter, which is sent home with the youngestchild in the family each Wednesday. The newsletter is very informativenot only for P&C news but also for general school information.

Join us in our meetings- you will find it a most rewarding andenjoyable experience.

Why the need for a healthy canteen?

The canteen plays a very important role within the school. It can beviewed as the central hub or `engine room' within the school thatkeeps students’ ‘fuel' supplies topped up and, in addition, supportssocial and learning objectives throughout the school.

As an integral part of the school it has responsibilities beyond thoseof the corner store or take away food outlet.

A healthy school canteen models the positive nutritional messagesthat are taught in the classroom and may introduce students to newfoods that they have not previously experienced. School canteenscan also provide a substantial proportion of a child's daily nutritionalintake if both lunch and snacks are regularly purchased. The canteenprovides a high standard of food service with regard to nutrition, menu planning, hygiene and management.

What is a Fresh Taste canteen?

A Fresh Tastes canteen complies with the key requirement of theNSW Healthy School Canteen Strategy. The Strategy requires thatschool canteens offer a range of healthy food and drinks, consistentwith the Australian Dietary Guidelines for Children and Adolescents.

Foods and drinks that lack nutritional value or are high in saturatedfat, added sugar and salt, may only be sold on two designated`Occasional' food days per term.

A Fresh Tastes canteen also:

• involves students and parents in decision-making• communicates well with the whole school community • runs as an efficient and effective service• complies with food safety and hygiene requirements • promotes healthy foods and seeks customer feedback • documents all key practices in a canteen policy• prepares and displays food in a safe and appealing manner• attracts, keeps and rewards volunteer and paid staff.

How does a fresh canteen work?Foods for sale in the Canteen are chosen using a food spectrum:

Canteen Committee

Being part of the canteen committee is a great way to get a little bitmore involved in the running of the canteen. The committee providessupport to the canteen and works in a communication role betweenthe canteen and the P&C.

Canteen ConvenorThis role is filled by a volunteer from the school community. Theprimary role is one of support to the manager and volunteers.

Canteen SecretaryThis role is also filled by a volunteer from the community. Thesecretary is responsible for keeping an accurate record of theminutes at the monthly canteen meeting.

Committee Members/ FundraisersYou can get involved in planning and running fundraising days in thecanteen outside of normal canteen days. These fundraising days areessential to provide extra funds to keep the canteen running to thehigh standards set by the Food Authority. You will gain geat skills andwill be provided with Food Handling training.

School RepresentativeTraditionally the school representative is the principal. This roleinvolves supporting and coordinating canteen activities within theschool curriculum.

Student RepresentativeThis is usually one or two senior representative of the SRC (StudentRepresentative Council). Their input is valuable when planning ourpromotions each term. The canteen appreciates their ideas and inputand try to implement their suggestions as much as possible.

What is involved in volunteering for theTWPS canteen? The main objective in volunteering is to assist the canteen managerto provide a nutritious recess and lunch for the students and staff.

The Benefits:• Your child loves having you in the canteen.

• You have the opportunity to work in a friendly, relaxed environment

• You are supporting your child’s school in its efforts to improvenutrition for children at school.

• You gain catering skills and work experience in the food industry.

Morning: Arrival between 9am and 9.15am Finish at 11.30am

Afternoon: Arrival by 11.30am Finish between 1.30pm and 2pm

What if I can not be there right on 9am?Should you need to drop a pre-schooler off or are just running a littlelate…no problem. If you are going to be later than half an hour, a phone call is alwaysappreciated just so we know you haven’t forgotten.

Will I get to serve my child? Yes.

How do I volunteer to work in the TWPScanteen?Just fill out the volunteer form at the end of this document anddrop it off in the canteen letterbox in the School office .

Please note that for both safety and insurance reasons, children of volunteers are not permitted in the canteen.

What if I have a ‘free day” and amavailable to work at short notice?

Either ring the manager and let her know you are available, or justshow up – our regular volunteers don’t mind getting the odd day offif there is an extra pair of hands.

Watch the Wednesday Weekly too for days we are short.

LAST BUT BY NO MEANS LEAST…

How does my child order their lunch?

Please write in a DARK PEN with NAME & CLASS clearly written atthe BOTTOM of every bag so it can still be seen when the top isfolded over to keep food in.

PLEASE USE A SEPARATE BAG for FOOD & DRINK (as well ashot and cold foods).

MONEY falling out of lunch bags is also a problem. Please don’t usesticky tape to seal the bag as it always tears a hole in the bag whenremoved. One way to help solve money falling out when ordering hotand cold food/drink is the following:-

We suggest you put ALL the money in the cold food/drink bag, fold it inquarters and place it INSIDE the second food bag. Then fold the top ofthe second bag over a couple of times. If you are only ordering one

item, put the money in the one bag and fold the bag into quarters, itis less likely to fall out this way.

Sometimes money does fall out or goes walkabout. (Volunteers canonly go by how much money is in the bag when it arrives at thecanteen.) If this happens, lunch is provided as ordered and a stickeris placed on the lunch bag stating how much money is missing. Itwould be appreciated if this amount could be sent in to the canteenon the next open day, preferably with the lunch bag and sticker.

MISTAKES do happen despite all good intentions, especially if it’s abusy day and we are short staffed. If there has been a mistake withyour child’s order, PLEASE encourage them to come to the canteenIMMEDIATELY.If they are shy or nervous, encourage them to bring a friend or tell ateacher. We don’t bite and are more than happy to fix any problems! However, we can’t fix what we don’t know!

If at any time you have any questions or concerns, please come in and see us. We are very keen to please and are veryaccommodating.

Welcome to Thornleigh West Public School.

The Mother's Day/Father's Day Gift Group (MDFDGG) is asubcommittee of the P&C. On the Thursday prior to Mother's Day weoperate a small gift shop for the children of Thornleigh West PublicSchool to come and purchase a gift for mum, nanna or a specialfemale they would like to treat on Mother's Day. Each class isallocated a shopping time and the children thoroughly enjoy theexperience of choosing their own special gift.

For Father's Day over the past few years we have organised aFather's Day Breakfast. We serve approximately 380 fathers, grandfathers and children from the Thornleigh West Community. Thebreakfast is held in the school hall, the band entertains us and wehave a gift shop for those who would still like to purchase somethingfor that special male in their lives (this is much smaller than theMother's Day Shop as the main focus for Father's Day is thebreakfast). This has been a great success. The community spirit andenjoyment on the children's faces sharing breakfast with dad, grandad and friends is wonderful. We serve a delicious breakfast offresh fruit, homemade muffins, eggs and sausages, not to forget the

essential morning coffee for dad before he heads off to work.

We purchase most of our gifts and craft supplies from wholesalersand our volunteers make, create, wrap and price approximately onemorning a fortnight in preparation for these two big days. So keep aneye on the Wednesday Weekly for meeting dates.

We average around 1,200 gifts for the Mother's Day store providingthe children with wonderful variety. Some of the gifts have includedsoaps, umbrellas, shawls, cushions, scarves, pamper packs,'diamonds', ornaments for the garden and for around the home, special note pads … and many more.

A selection of gifts are displayed in the school library the week beforeMother's Day and Father's Day so the children have the opportunityto be inspired. A note is printed in the Wednesday Weekly to assistmums and dads with prices and ideas as well. Prices range form$2.00 - $12.00. We meet in the school hall kitchen area for acuppa, a laugh and to try our hand at creating, or simply wrappingand pricing. New ideas and new buyer contacts are always welcome. The smile on the children's faces makes it all worthwhile. If you haveyounger siblings they are welcome to join us as well.

Band Program

Thornleigh West Primary School has a long and proud historyof a strong Band program. The Thornleigh West BandProgram has been a successful part of the school'sextra-curricular education for more than 17 years.

This program continues to be a very popular activity for our students, with around 100 children in Years 3-6 participating.

The program is co-ordinated by specialist band conductors, supplemented by a number of private music tutors, acommittee of parent volunteers, and the support of oursenior teaching staff. While the majority of our bandmembers enter the program with no prior musicalexperience, it is fantast ic to witness the progressivedevelopment of individual musical ability, performance skillsand personal confidence in these students.

The school has 4 Bands with their band rehearsalsheld in the mornings except for Funk Band which isheld in the afternoon:Training Band For first year apprentices open to Years 3-6.Rehearsals once a week.

Junior Concert BandThose with one year's experience.Rehearsals twice a week.

Senior Concert BandThose who have been in the band program at least 2 years or whocan play at that same standard.Rehearsals twice a week.

Funk BandFocusing on the jazz idiom - entry is by audition only, for studentswho are progressing to senior concert band.Rehearsals once a week.

One of the main highlights each year is the band camp attended byall band members and which plays an important role for developingskills musically and socially in a fun environment. Many areas ofperformance and teamwork can be focussed upon heavily in such anenvironment.

In addition to the weekly band rehearsals, all students are required toattend a half hour one-to-one tutor lesson each week which isimportant to develop the necessary skills to be able to play in anensemble

Outside the normal school band programme, the String Ensemblewas formed in 2009 and managed by an independent music tutor. This string ensemble caters for students who play instruments suchas violin, viola, cello etc to enhance their skills in a group setting.

All bands and the String Ensemble will have the opportunity toparticipate in school assemblies, spring fairs, performances andeisteddfods throughout the year.

Youthsaver accounts have replaced the old Dollarmite accounts.

The account can be opened through the school when your childstarts or before hand if you prefer.

Processing the deposits is quick and easy. A volunteer from the

school collects the money and enters each deposit into user-friendlyInternet-based Windows software, provided by the CommonwealthBank. This is balanced and transmitted to the Bank electronically. Thevolunteer then makes a single deposit at the nearest CommonwealthBank branch or Australia Post outlet.

Who benefits from School banking?Benefits to the Children:Student banking encourages infants and primary school children tosave their money and watch it grow.

Benefits to the School:The bank will give

• $5 for each new Youthsaver account opened through the school

• 5% commission for each deposit (up to a maximum of $10 incommission per individual deposit)

• Minimum commission payment of $25 per quarter (provided atleast one deposit is processed in the quarter)

Banking is done on a Tuesday morning at 9.30. It takes about anhour and requires two volunteers.

Twice per term Book Club forms are sent home with your child: eachclub demonstrates a relevant reading level for your child. Other levelsare also available if needed.

Purchasing books is purely optional; there is certainly no obligationto buy.

All orders do, however, assist the classroom teacher to build up theirclassroom resources through free picks, and the Library purchasenew books through bonus coupons.
