Née en 1969

D’origine ukrainienne, Oksana MAS travaille différents genres, de la peinture

à l'art d'installation.

Sa ville natale, Odessa est l’une de ses grandes sources d’inspiration. Peut-être

est-ce parce qu’après de nombreuses années sous l’emprise du totalitarisme, la

ville a pu s’ouvrir à la culture, au point de devenir un centre cosmopolite. Ou

alors est-ce simplement les bords de mer qui ont nourri ses fantasmes de

liberté.

Après des années d’apprentissage artistique, dont sept à l’Ecole d’Art

d’Ilyichivsk, Oksana MAS décide d’étudier la philosophie et les sciences

sociales, car selon elle, les compétences techniques sont une chose mais, les

particularités de la conscience en sont une autre.

A travers la série « HEART REMOVING », l’artiste rend hommage à un

moment clef de l’Histoire, où les avancées technologiques, notamment la

création des moteurs, ont permis la facilité de nos déplacements, et

l’accélération de nos mouvements. C’est cette faculté d’évolution de l’Homme,

qu’Oksana Mas a su sublimer en apportant à ces moteurs de voitures de luxe,

une touche de glamour et de féminité, parvenant ainsi à en retirer une beauté

matérielle, symbolique d’une beauté plus conceptuelle.

Born 1969

Oksana MAS is an Ukrainian artist who works different genres as

painting or installation art.

Odessa, the birthplace of the artist, is the one of the main sources

of her inspiration. Perhaps this is because this city has been open

to culture, after many years in the grip of totalitarianism and

finally became a cosmopolitan center. Maybe the seashores just

fed Oksana MAS’s fantasies of freedom.

After years of artistic learning, including 7 in the Ilyichivsk Art

School, she decided to study philosophy and social sciences, as

technical skills are one thing but the characteristics of

consciousness are another.

Through the "HEART REMOVING" series, the artist celebrates a

key of history, when technological advances, including the

development of engines, enable the ease of our travel time, and

the acceleration of our movements. Oksana Mas sublimated this

ability of evolution of man in providing a touch of glamor and

femininity to these luxury cars engines. She managed to remove a

physical beauty, symbolic of more conceptual beauty.

Perfoming Arts

L'art est un moyen de faire son deuil, de se reconstruire

après la perte d’une partie de soi. A cet égard, la création est

un processus de guérison pour l’artiste, qui utilise la forme

comme la preuve limpide d’une plénitude retrouvée.

La sphère est l’emblème d’une circularité qui a la capacité

de rassembler Instinct, Rationalité et Spiritualité comme le

montre l’Histoire de l’Art depuis le Moyen Age. Depuis

plusieurs années, Oksana Mas travaille la sphère comme une

forme géométrique tenant en elle-même un principe de

l'unité universelle. L'artiste s’inspire de la Krashenki,

coutume folklorique ukrainienne : des œufs en bois

recouverts de motifs traditionnels célébrant Pâques. Sa

démarche fût de donner des œufs à des détenues de prison

pour femmes, des intellectuels et d’autres personnes issues

de domaines et de pays différents, pour leurs demander de

les peindre.

L'installation Post-vs-Proto-Renaissance présentée à la

Biennale de Venise dans le pavillon de l'Ukraine est une

partie de son œuvre monumentale (92x134m), elle est

composée de 3.640.000 œufs en bois. L‘iconographie fait

référence à l’œuvre Les Jardins du Paradis des frères Van

Eyck, artistes flamands du XVème siècle, qui peut être vue sur

un autel dans la ville flamande de Gand. Les œufs constituent

une véritable architecture dont la structure évoque une

mosaïque, dans laquelle, tels des tatouages iconographiques,

les œufs constituent des éléments indépendants. Art ancien et

moderne se confondent en une image embrassant histoires de

péchés et rêves de rédemption, mais aussi espoir et désir de

pureté. Selon le point de vue adopté par les spectateur, le

travail se décompose comme s'il s'agissait d'un fichier

numérique: les œufs faisant office de pixels et représentant le

destin dramatique de l'humanité. Contempler le travail

d'Oksana Mas est une forme d'initiation à une nouvelle vie.

Performing Arts

Art is the attempt to mend a bereavement, the loss of completeness and

the descent into a partial and fragmentary world. In this regard, creation

is the development and healing process of the artist who uses form as

the crystal-clear evidence of a newfound wholeness. The sphere is the

emblem of a circularity that flows and brings together, as shown in the

history of art, which, ever since the Middle Ages, has always combined

reason with instinct, rationality with spirituality. For several years now,

Oksana Mas has been working on reclaiming the sphere as a geometric

shape holding within itself a principle of universal oneness. The artist

starts from the krashenki Ukrainian folk custom: wooden eggs covered

in traditional decorations celebrating Easter. She gave the eggs,

incarnation of the sphere, to inmates in women’s penitentiaries,

intellectuals and people working in various fields from forty-two

different countries asking them to paint them.

The installation by the title Post-vs.-Proto-Renaissance presented at the

Biennale di Venezia in the Pavilion of Ukraine is a section of the

monumental work (m.92X134), composed by 3.640,000 wooden eggs.

The iconographic reference is the work of the Van Eyck brothers,

proto-Renaissance artists who painted "The gardens of paradise," which

can be seen on an altar in the Flemish city of Ghent.

The eggs form a veritable architecture whose structure evokes a mosaic in

which the eggs’ iconographic tattoos constitute the single elements. Ancient

and modern art merge into an image embracing stories of sins and dreams of

redemption, hope in the future and a yearning for purity. Depending on the

distance, the work breaks down as if it were a digital file of egg-pixels, each

one representing the dramatic destiny of mankind. Contemplating the work of

Oksana Mas is a form of initiation into a new life, a full life.
