Le Passé Composé

• In English, we have two different kinds of past tense:

• I have eaten. I ate.• I have seen that film. I saw that film (yesterday).

• In french, both tenses are expressed one way.• J’ai mangé J’ai mangé• J’ai vu ce film. J’ai vu ce film (hier).

• To clarify that you’ve already done something, You throw in “déjà”.– J’ai déjà mangé.– J’ai déjà vu ce film.

How to Form the Past Tense (passé composé)

• Step One: Identify your noun – (e.g. Fred.)

• Step Two: Conjugate it with avoir

• Fred a

• Step Three: Add the Past Participle of the main verb you want to use. (vendre) – Fred a vendu sa voiture.

Finding your Past Participle.• Oh, not so easy. Only sure fire formula is for verbs that end in –er. For

them, just take off the “r” and put an accent aigu (the friendly accent!) on the “e”.

– manger------- mangé– Jouer -------- joué

• For the –ir verbs we’ve learned so far, take off the –r and you’re done.– Je dors (dormir) ------ j’ai dormi– Je sors (sortir)----- je suis sorti

• For the –re verbs you learned today, take off the –re and replace with a “u”– J’ai attendu le bus (attendre)– Il a perdu son chapeau (perdre)

Random Participles

• Some follow no patterns. For these, you just have to memorise them. (Pg.193)

• Faire---- fait (j’ai fait du bricolage)• Avoir---- eu (j’ai eu un petit accident)• Être ----- été (j’ai été surpris!) (yes, just like the word for

summer!)

• Mettre----mis (j’ai mis le livre dans mon sac.)• Pleuvoir--- plu (Il a plu hier!)• Pouvoir---- pu (j’ai pu dormir ce week-end)• Voulouir---- voulu (il n’a pas voulu partir)• Devoir------ dû (j’ai dû travailler ce matin)
