4 origines des marchés de Noël de Strasbourg aux Antilles. The origins of the Strasbourg Christmas market in the Caribbean.
Depuis 1999, Bethléem est la capitale de Noël. Mais saviez-vous que c’est à Strasbourg, ancienne capitale de Noël, qu’est apparu en 1570 le premier marché de Noël : le Christkindelsmärik. Il fait suite aux foires de la Saint-Martin, fêtées le 11 novembre, où l’on vendait cochonnailles, oies et canards gras. Ce marché, associé au Christkin-del (l’Enfant Jésus), permit de concur-rencer et supplanter Saint-Nicolas. Les historiens auraient retrouvé des traces de quelques marchés de Noël aux An-tilles amenés par les colons français. Ce n’est que depuis 10 ans que l’on en retrouve régulière¬ment aux Antilles.
Ever since 1999, Bethlehem has been the capital of Christ¬mas. But did you know that the first Christmas Market was held in Strasbourg in 1570 : The Christkindelsmärik. It was the continuity of St. Marteen Day, celebrated on Nov. 11th where you could find all kind of sausages and water fowl. This market, associ-ated with Christkindel (Baby Jesus), ended up supplanting Saint Nicolas. His-torians did find some signs of a few Christmas markets, brought by French colons, in the Caribbean. They’ve been reappearing only in the last ten years.

BoxiNg day Et pour continuer avec l’esprit de Noël, n’oublions pas Boxing Day le 26 décembre. Jour férié dans tous les pays anglophones, il est devenu un événement important sur nos îles ! À l’origine, deux théories : La première racontant que le lendemain de Noël les employeurs offraient à leurs servit-eurs des cadeaux dans des boîtes. La deuxième relatant que c’était le jour où les prêtres ouvraient les troncs des églises et distribuaient l’argent aux pauvres ! Dans les deux cas il s’agit d’un geste d’amour et de don, illus-trant à merveille l’Esprit de Noël!
And to continue with the Christmas Spirit, Boxing Day will be celebrated on Dec.26 But what exactly is Boxing Day ? Well it is still a holiday on all English speaking territories, and there seems to be 2 theories on its origin. One of the two being that the day af-ter Christmas, employers offered gifst (in boxes) to their servants as bonuses. The second saying that it was the day priests opened the alm boxes and dis-tribute their contents to the poor ! In both cases, it is a gesture of love, and it reminds all of us that giving is part of the Spirit of Christmas !

Le gagnant du concours gagne un billet d’avion. Et c’est à l’office du Tourisme de désigner le vainqueur.Throughout December, Saint-Martin is illuminated by Christmas ornaments and lights. The houses are well deco-rated and lit as well as the shops and boats. The winner wins a plane ticket. And the tourist information office is to decide of the winner.

petits plaisirs du palais !A St Barth, la tradition veut que le repas de noel soit agre-mente de “tchek”, des galettes de noix de coco rapée et qu’on parfume à la canelle. Mais le clou de la fete de-meure le “pone”, un pain composé de patates douces, de giraumon(potiron local), de sucre, de vanille, de raisins, de canelle, le tout enduit de beurre et doré au four.In St Barth, traditionally, christmas meal has to be brighten up some tchek : a coconut round flat biscuit with sugar and cin-namon. Pone : a sweet patato and pumpkin bread with sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, raisins and butter

PUDDING A LA PATATE DOUCESweet potatoes pudding1kg patates douces, 200g sucre brun, 125g farine, 300g lait de coco, 150g cup de fruits secs, 2 cc vanille, 1 ½ cc noix de muscade, 1 cc mélange d’épices, 2 cc sucre, 1 cc sel, 1 cc margarine. Lavez et épluchez les patates, puis rapez les avec la noix de coco.Ajouter de l’eau et récupérez le jus. Mélangez la farine, les épices, sel et noix de muscade et ajoutez à la préparation initiale. Ajoutez le sucre, les fruits et le lait de coco. Bien mélanger. Graisser un moule, versez la préparation, faites cuire à 175° C pendant 40-60 min.
2 pounds sweet potato,1 1/2 cups brown sugar, 1 cup flour, 2 cups coconut milk, 1 1/2 cups dried fruits, 2 teaspoons vanilla, 1 1/2 teaspoon grated nutmeg, 1 teaspoon mixed spice, 2 tablespoons sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon margarine. Wash and pare off the skin of the potatoes. Wash again then grate along with coconut. Add water and squeeze juice through a strainer. Blend flour, mixed spice (raisins etc) ,salt, and nutmeg. Combine this mixture with the grated potatos and mix well. Add sugar, fruits and coconut milk. Mix well. Grease pan, pour in batter, bake at 350 degrees F for 40-60 minutes or until done.
