History Coach Jim Graver started the Leo ball rolling in 1957 and chances are that ball was a

baseball. Graver was the baseball coach of the Abington High School in Pennsylvania,

USA and an active member of the Glenside Lions Club. With help from his fellow Lion,

William Ernst, the first Leo club was charted on December 5, 1957.

As the world’s first Leo club, the Abington High School Leo Club created the Leo

acronym – Leadership,

Equality, Opportunity – and they chose their school colours, maroon and gold to

serve as the Leo club colours. Later, Equality was changed to Experience. In October

1967, the board of directors of Lions Clubs International adopted the Leo Club

Program as an official program of the association. The Leo Club Program has been

growing strong for over 50 years in Sri Lanka. Community service remains the

cornerstone of the program. Like their Lion counterparts, Leo club members enjoy

serving their neighbours and watching positive results unfold.

In 1969 the First ever Leo Club was inaugurated in Sri Lanka, Leo Club of Wattala, and

the program became popular among Lions which they paved way for many youth by

organizing more Leo Clubs. In order

to better fulfil both administrative and service requirements, District 306 was divided

in 1978, to two Districts – namely 306A and 306B.

With this division, Sri Lanka’s Multiple District 306 was born. Under the new structure, the two sub District 306 A and 306 B were able to serve more effectively.

With the passage of time, District 306 A and B expanded their network steadily. For

administrative purposes, the need for redistricting was once again necessary and in

1998 the Multiple District 306 re-demarcated to three Sub Districts, 306 A, B & C.

Due to the rapid growth of the Leoism once again in the year 2004 / 2005 another

redistricting programme was carried out re-demarcating to 6 Sub Districts – 306 A1 &

A2, B1 & B2, C1 & C2. However, after the establishment of 306 A1, as the Leos of 306

A1, we have conducted and will continue conducting various activities to the needy

children and elders, furthermore the environment and healthcare as well as the

betterment of the Leo Movement and its Members.

6

Motto Leadership Leo members acquire skills as project organizers and motivators of their

peers.

Experience

They discover how teamwork and cooperation can bring about change in

their community and the world.

Opportunity

Leos develop positive character traits and receive recognition for their

contributions.

Leo club objective

To provide the youth of the world with an opportunity for development and

contribution, individually and collectively, as responsible members of the local,

national and international community.

Leo Club Program Leo Clubs are open to young men and women of good character, from the age 12 to

30, who is dedicated in making a difference in their communities’. Each Leo club is

sponsored by a Lions Club. Leo Club members elect their own officers, schedule their

own meetings and execute their own fund- raisers and service projects.

Popular service initiatives among Leo Clubs include Protection of the environment;

Community improvement; Drug abuse prevention; Health education; Educational

assistance & Social services.

The social aspects of the Leo Clubs Program provide opportunities to meet other

young people who share common interests, values and goals. The international

scope of Leo clubs provides for interaction at regional Leo forums, the Lions

International Convention, ‘Club Twinning’ or pen pal. In addition, Leos can apply for participation in the Lions International youth exchange and youth camp programs.

Leo Gayanga Dias

It is with great excitement I express myself to the District Directory of Leo

District 306 B1.

Leoism; a place leaders are born, is a great opportunity for all the youth around

the world for their individual development. Leoism has many to offer for a

person who is willing to gain that knowledge, experience and development. As

Leos we have power and strength to change the world. Using that positively

can influence the communities in a greater extent. Since we are not in a perfect

world, using this power and strength to influence the communities for a

positive change will be a challenge. Yet, here we are as Leo youth leaders to

achieve that task.

In this journey towards a positive change, Leos in Sri Lanka are doing their best

in each and every aspect. Leos of B1 are also supporting in a greater extent in

achieving these targets. Therefore, I would like to wish all the Leos of B1 for a

successful year and furthermore, I would like to extend my best wishes for Leo

Message from District

President 306 C1

Leo Mandakini Kariyawasam

It is with great pleasure and honor I would

like to pen my words to the souvenir of the

17th Annual District Installation, Leo District

306B1. Despite of the current situation and in an

unpredictable environment I’m very much glad and proud to see a Lady leadership taking over the District which is also

very much commendable. As we all know that the current situation is

very much challenging I strongly believe that District President Leo

Minolee will definitely give her best and show the right path to all her

fellow Leos.

Leo District 306B1 is one of the Districts which produced a lot of

leaders who led by example and the statement itself is proven as one of

the Past Leaders has been designated to the Multiple District to serve as

the Secretary for the current Leoistic year. I also hope that the new

generation of B1 will also climb up the ladder under the leadership

of District President Leo Minolee and would achieve greater heights.

I would like to extend my warm wishes to my loving fellow District

President Leo Minolee to continue on a very successful Leoistic year

and to show her charisma and unbeatable leadership to everyone out

there. Finally I also would like to humbly request from all the Council

Officers, Club Presidents, Past leaders and all other fellow Leos to give

their fullest support to the young lady to conclude a very successful yet

another remarkable journey of Leo District 306B1.

Message from District President 306 C2

Leo Lion Hasindu

Maharage

It’s an immense pleasure of mine to convey this message to the Annual

District Directory for the leostic year 2021/2022. Leo is a movement where you can be proud of yourself for the times you’ve said “yes” when all it meant was extra work for you and was seemingly helpful to someone else. When most of the people live their lives wondering if they were able to make a difference to this world we leos don’t have that problem. I wish all the very best for the betterment of your district and I believe that you as a district has a strong leadership with capabilities to make a significant difference this year. I’d like to congratulate the outgoing district president for the job well done and I extend my best wishes to your new president and the team for an excellent journey ahead. Leo Lion Hasindu Maharage, District President (2021/2022), Leo District 306 C2.

Induction Ceremony of New Members

The Leo club president, the Leo club advisor or a specific Lions club officer performs

the ceremony for the initiation of new members. The presiding officer calls the

meeting to order with these words:

“We are about to begin the initiation ceremony which will welcome new members to the Leo Club. This is a most important occasion for these members and for our

club, and I sincerely request the attention and silence of the membership during the

ceremony. Please withhold any applause or demon- strations until it is complete. I

will now call the names of the new members and as I do, I would request that they

rise and come forward.”

45

The presiding officer calls the names of the new members. When all the candidates

are standing, the of- ficer says:

“On behalf of the officers and members, I welcome you to the Leo Club. You

have been invited to

become members, and we are all happy and proud of your decision to accept.

Membership in a Leo club is a privilege. You are about to enter a program that

extends throughout the world. It began in 1967 as an official activity of The

International Association of Lions Clubs. Leo goals include high moral standards,

personal responsibility, an attitude of cheerfulness and understanding, and in

addition, extending a helping hand to those in need.

Now, in your own community and with your own acquaintances, an entire series of

challenges await. You are not alone in your efforts. At all times, you can count on the

encouragement and cooperation of your fellow Leo club members, officers, and the

Leo club advisor. They will be happy to help you achieve the high goals which you

have adopted.

Once again, I express my congratulations to you for having joined this club. I now ask

that you repeat after me the obligation of membership:

“I...(Each one should state his/her name)... in the presence of the members of the Leo club... Take on this solemn obligation... To abide by the constitution and Bylaws

of the club... To attend all meetings regular- ly... To support and further the interests

of the club... In all its undertakings... And the contribute my fair share...Towards the

financial support of the club... I further declare that I will assist in maintaining...

Build- ing... And strengthening the membership of the club... That I will help the

club... By actively serving on com- mittees and in other capacities...Where my efforts

are needed... And finally... That I will develop in myself...

Those qualities... Of cheerfulness, service and loyalty... Which should characterize a

Leo club member... At all times.”

You are now members of the Leo Club.”

(The presiding officer now pins a lapel button on each new Leo club member and

presents a membership card and membership certificate.)

46
