METAMORPHOSISANDMEMORY
En lien avec l’École de printemps 2016, organisée à Rome à la Villa Médicis par le réseau international de formation à la recherche en histoire de l’art (RIFHA), sur le thème Passés présents, le Labex Les Passés dans le présent, le laboratoire des arts et des représentations (HAR EA/4414 Paris Ouest Nanterre la Défense) et l’Institut national d’histoire de l’art s’associent autour de la présentation du film Aby Warburg Metamorphosis and Memory, réalisé par Judith Wechsler.
Aby Warburg (1866-1929) was an influential art historian whose interests ranged from the Italian Renaissance to Hopi ritual dances, from frescoes to postage stamps, combining art history, anthropology and religion. He explored the afterlife of antiquity, the tensions between the Apollonian and the Dionysian, the rational and the irrational, and the secular and the religious, in Renaissance paintings of Italy, Germany and the Netherlands. This one hour documentary traces the development of Warburg’s ideas in the context of his life and times and his personal struggle with depression and psychosis. Told largely through Warburg’s own words and interviews with leading Warburg scholars in England, the US, and Germany.
Judith Wechsler is an art historian and filmmaker. She has written and directed 27 films, predominantly on art. Wechsler is Professor emerita of art history at Tufts University; she taught for many years at MIT and has been visiting professor at Harvard and the École normale supèrieure. She is the author of books on Cézanne and Daumier, and numerous articles and essays. Wechsler has made films for the Louvre (Dessiner, la main qui pense), with the Comèdie francaise, for the reopening of the Orangerie museum (Le dessein des Nymphéas), the Metropolitan Museum (Manet, Painter of Modern Life). The Passages of Walter Benjamin, was shown at L’INHA in 2015. Wechsler was a fellow at the American Academy in Berlin and was awarded “Chevalier de l’ordre des arts et des lettres”.
