October 2nd, 2016 ~ Twenty – Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

A SHORT NOTE FROM FATHER JOE… This week Fr. Dan and I are at the priests’ convocation with Bishop Serrtelli. I just wanted you to know you are in our prayers and thoughts even when we are a little farther away. Monday we held the funeral service for Deacon John Meyer and I thank that OLM parishioners who came out to support his family. Fr. Joe A THOUGHT FOR THIS WEEK… Struggle can build character or wrestle it down a dark and dingy road, but I believe that faith and the warmth of good people around us…and good choice…strengthen the person within, the one God designed, the person he wants us to be. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY…ends Nov 20 but God’s mercy never ends… “Dear brothers and sisters, Christ died and rose once for all, and for everyone, but the power of the Resurrection, this Passover from slavery to evil to the freedom of goodness, must be accomplished in every age, in our concrete existence, in our everyday lives. How many deserts, even today, do human beings need to cross! Above all, the desert within, when we have no love for God or neighbor, when we fail to realize that we are guardians of all that the Creator has given us and continues to give us. God’s mercy can make even the driest land become a garden, can restore life to dry bones (cf. Ez 37:1-14). So this is the invitation which I address to everyone: Let us accept the grace of Christ’s Resurrection! Let us be renewed by God’s mercy, let us be loved by Jesus, let us enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and let us become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace flourish. And so we ask the risen Jesus, who turns death into life, to change hatred into love, vengeance into forgiveness, war into peace. Yes, Christ is our peace, and through him we implore peace for all the world. — Pope Francis CALLING ALL MEN!! On Saturday, October 15th from 8:00 until 1:00 the Paterson Diocese is holding a Men’s Conference. You are invited to attend. Register online at www.insidethewalls.org. It promises to be an uplifting and enhancing time. Join with Danny Abramowicz former New Orleans Saint wide receiver, and others! Head counts are needed to prepare light snacks and coffee. For questions see Deacon Jim or contact him at [email protected].

R.C.I.A. PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT FOR 2016-17 Do you, a family member or one of your friends have an interest in learning more about the Catholic Church with the possibility of joining our Faith? Are you already a Catholic who has not been confirmed or received your First Communion? Or do you just want to learn more about your faith? If so, Our Lady of the Mountain and Saint Marks Catholic Churches will be beginning our 2016-2017 R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation) program on Wednesday October 5, 2016. If you or someone you know meets the above criteria and would like more information about our RCIA program call Deacon Nick Ardito at 908-343-8094 or the parish office at Our Lady of the Mountain or Saint Marks. CROP WALK… A crop walk is taking place in Long Valley on Sunday October 23rd --- A CROP walk is a community effort to help alleviate hunger in the world and in our local community. The CROP walk is sponsored by St. Luke’s, St. Mark’s, Our Lady of the Mountain and Messiah Episcopal Church in Chester, NJ. We have had a CROP walk in town since 2008. If you have never participated it is really easy. It can be a fun family day. We walk from St. Luke’s Church to the Middle School and back to St. Luke’s a total of 3 miles. The purpose of the hike is to raise money. A percentage of the money we raise is returned to Long Valley and we donate it to the Long Valley (CAP) food pantry which helps many people in need. There will be donation/sponsor envelopes on the gathering space table. All you have to do is take an envelope and get some pledges from family and friends and bring the envelope with the donations to St. Luke’s church at 1:30 on Oct. 23rd. The walk begins at 2 p.m. The walks takes just about 1.5 hours on average. BISHOP’S ANNIVERARY CELEBRATION FOR COUPLES MARRIED 25 OR 50 YEARS… The Silver and Gold Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at St. Peter the Apostle, Parsippany. Arrangements can be made by contacting the parish office. Registrations will be accepted through Monday, October 24, 2016. Information will be sent from the Office of Family Life once your registration has been processed. Congratulations on this joyous occasion! SOME THOUGHTS ON THE POLITICAL PROCESS… Quotes from the United States Bishops’ document – Faithful Citizenship…. “The Church’s obligation to participate in sharping the moral character of society is a requirement of our faith, a part of the mission given to us by Jesus Christ. As people of both faith and reason, Catholics are called to bring truth to political life and to practice Christ’s commandments to “Love one another”. The US constitution protects the right of individual believers and religious bodies to proclaim and live out their faith without government interference, favoritism, or

discrimination. Civil law should recognize and protect the church’s right and responsibility to participate in society without abandoning its moral convictions. Our nation’s tradition of pluralism is enhance, not threatened, when religious groups and people of faith bring their convictions into public life. The Catholic Church community bring to political dialogue a consistent moral framework and broad experience service those in need.” WHY WE ARE CATHOLIC... We are Catholic because we believe…The Church is a “communion of saints”: this expression refers first to the “holy things”, above all the Eucharist, by which “the unity of believers, who form one body in Christ, is both represented and brought about”. The term “communion of saints” refers also to the communion of “holy persons” in Christ who “died for all,” so that what each one does or suffers in and for Christ bears fruit for all. We believe in the communion of all the faithful of Christ, those who are pilgrims on earth, the dead who are being purified, and the blessed in heaven, all together forming one Church; and we believe that in this communion, the merciful love of God and his saints is always attentive to our prayers. The Catechism of the Catholic Church 960-961.
