Liveoak

It is July, and now it really feels like summer. We hope the summer season is going well for you and yours. Here at Live Oak we had a great VBS in June. We owe a special thanks to all who participated, taught, gave, directed, cooked, cleaned and performed (singing, acting, directing and building). We owe so much to our volunteers and staff who make each ministry special and unique. We are especially grateful to our newest staff member Ms. Trish Graves, who is our Director of Children's Ministries. She has so many wonderful ideas and brings an abundance of energy and grace to LOUMC. For those who aren't aware, Terrie Crosby (Ms. Terrie) is officially retiring. She has served as Director of Christian Education for approximately 14 years. She brought some wonderful new ministries to our church. Some of her accomplishments: a new and improved VBS including writing the curriculum, Children's Church, Fall Festival, a new and improved children's wing and nursery program, and assistance in bringing AWANA to LOUMC. And..... she was instrumental in forming, leading, persevering and launching the 11:30 praise band and service that now averages approximately 400 in worship. As a "volunteer" she led small groups for the youth girls, chaperoned youth trips, and began "small groups" including The Union and The Branch (the college and career, 20 something’s and 30 something’s). The list could continue... So as we reflect on the time and effort Terrie gave as a professional and volunteer and the hundreds of lives she has impacted, we say THANK YOU!!! We hope you can join us in July as we look at the subject of FREEDOM and what it means to know Freedom and to keep our

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of

good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

“Thus God, determining to show more abundantly to the heirs of promise the immutable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we have strong consolation, we have refuge to lay

hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast . . .”

These scriptures make it clear that believers are going to have troubles in this world. No one is exempt. To accept Christ does not mean to take out an insurance policy against suffering.

Our lives are like an ocean voyage and there will be many storms and troubles along the way - physical and others. God promises that He will go with us through these storms until we reach the safety of the harbor. He also provides an anchor that will hold us secure to be able to ride out the storms. This anchor has three points that give us stability in the times of troubles. In his book Six Hours One Friday, by Max Lucado gives us these anchor points. He calls this “anchoring to the power of the cross.”

Anchor point #1 - My life is not futile. The function of this anchor point is to give us something which we can grip when facing the storms of life. It’s the conviction that there is absolute truth, someone is in control and each person has a purpose.

Anchor point #2 - My failures are not fatal. It’s not that God loves what we did, but He loves who we are . . .We are His. The one who has the right to condemn us provided the way to acquit us. We make mistakes, God doesn’t. And He made us.

Anchor point #3 - My death is not final. The tomb that held Jesus was not secure enough. He only went in to prove He could come out. When He came out, He turned the stone into an anchor point and dropped it deep into the uncharted waters of death. Because His tomb couldn’t hold, neither can ours. Our death is not final.

In spite of the storms of life, Paul tells us in Romans 8:18, “For I consider that the troubles of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”

Can you find yourself in the picture above? Many of our high school and adult

members either play a band Instrument in a band OR have played in a band in

the past. We want you to be a part of the new LOUMC community band!

What do you have to do? Email David Easley at

[email protected] and let him know what instrument you play.

This is not a band that will play every Sunday; however, we will rehearse on a

regular schedule and play in the services occasionally. There are terrific

arrangements of traditional hymns, gospel, praise and worship, etc. This is a

great opportunity to participate in another area of music ministry. Dust off that

trumpet, and buy a reed for that clarinet....better yet, just bring your horn and

we will dust if off and buy you a reed!

What was the first plague God brought upon the Egyptians when Pharaoh refused to let the Hebrews leave his land?

A. Water turned to blood

B. Dense darkness for three days

C. Death of all Egyptian firstborn males

D. Swarms of gnats

Answer: A (See Exodus 7:20-21 ff.)

River

In the Bible, rivers (and other bodies of water) often represent

deliverance, salvation, freedom and cleansing. The Jordan River is

especially prominent: The Israelites crossed it to enter the Promised

Land after God delivered them from slavery, and John baptized Jesus

(and many other people) there. The image of crossing the Jordan River

has long been a metaphor for death — crossing from earthly to heavenly

life, from worldly struggles to the bliss of God's kingdom, from physical

ailments to the wholeness of a resurrection body.
