Founded in 911, the Cluny Benedictine Abbey shone like a bea-con throughout all of Europe during the Middle Ages, sprea-ding its spiritual, economic, political and artistic influence. Theabbey's third church, named Cluny III and completed in 1130,was the dominant inspiration for all of Western Christendomprior to the construction of Saint Peter's Basilica in Rome in the16th century. The Cluny edifice would be dismantled followingthe French Revolution. Nowadays the abbey is almost complete. Apart from thechurch, several parts still remain : transept, gates, walls and de-fensive towers, palaces abbey, inns, monastic buildings andthe cloister of the 18th century, the flour store…”Increased rea-lity” screens (Cheese Tower and transept) and a 3D film cap-ture as faithfully as possible this immense abbey church.

Fondée en 911, l’abbaye bénédictine de Cluny arayonné sur toute l’Europe au Moyen-Age sur lesplans spirituel, économique, politique et artistique.Sa 3ème église abbatiale, Cluny III, achevée en1130, la plus grande de toute la Chrétienté occi-dentale avant la construction de Saint-Pierre deRome au XVIème siècle, est démantelée après laRévolution. L’abbaye est aujourd’hui presque complète ! Hor-mis son église, dont il ne reste que le bras sud dutransept, elle a conservé sa porte d’honneur, desremparts et tours de défense, ses palais abbatiaux,ses hôtelleries, ses bâtiments conventuels et cloî-tre du XVIIIème siècle, son farinier… Des écransde “réalité augmentée” (tour des Fromages et tran-sept) et un film en 3D restituent l’église abbatiale !

• Eglise Saint-Pierre de Brancion (Martailly-lès-Brancion)Chef-d’œuvre du roman tardif (fin du XIème siècle), elle sesitue à la pointe d'un promontoire qui surplombe la vallée dela Grosne à l'opposé du vieux manoir des sires de Brancion. Masterpiece of the later Romanesque period (end of the 11th cen-tury), this edifice lies at the edge of a bluff overlooking the GrosneRiver Valley across from the old manor house of the Brancion lords.

• Vieux Saint-Vincent (Mâcon)Proches de l’ancien oppidum de Mâcon, les deux tours et leporche d’entrée constituent les seuls vestiges de l’ancienne ca-thédrale dont le tympan roman est exceptionnel.

Located adjacent to Mâ-con's original oppidumsettlement, the two towersand entrance porchconstitute the lone ves-tiges of the former cathe-dral, whose Romanesquetympanum is consideredto be exceptional.

Défendant l'abbaye de Cluny et répu-tée imprenable sous Louis IX, Berzé estla plus importante forteresse de Bour-gogne du Sud avec ses treize toursconstruites du XIème au XIVème siècle.

As an outpost defending the Cluny Abbeyand reputed to be unassailable under thereign of Louis IX, Berzé is Southern Bur-gundy's most imposing fortress with its thir-teen towers built between the 11th and14th centuries.

Dominant un bourg médiéval, c’est parune porte fortifiée, unique accès, que l'onpénètre dans le village puis au château.Celui-ci fut l'une des plus redoutablesplaces fortes de Bourgogne du Sud.

Overlooking the Medieval hamlet, a fortressdoor is the sole means for accessing the villageand then into the castle. This set-up made forone of Southern Burgundy's most impenetra-ble fortified squares.

Château de Monceau PrisséLe poète y reçut de nombreuses personnalités. C’était sademeure de vigneron. Au milieu des vignes se trouve le pa-villon de la Solitude. Visite uniquement des extérieurs.

The poet played host here to many of the day's leading figures. Thisresidence served as Lamartine's winegrowing estate. Amidst the vi-neyards lies the "Solitude" Pavilion. Only the exteriors are open to visit.

LAMARTINE

Son nom est indissociable du Romantisme. Né à Mâcon en 1790, élevénon loin, à Milly, il mène simultanément des carrières littéraire et politiqued’envergure. En 1830, il est élu à l’Académie Française et devient, en1848, chef du gouvernement provisoire. Ses poèmes sont intem-porels, ses idées, d’avant-garde. Profondément attaché à saterre mâconnaise, il s’y retire en 1849 et y reçoit les célébri-tés du temps. Ses dernières années assombries par les sou-cis financiers, il meurt à Paris en 1869.

His name is inextricably tied to the Romanticism movement. Bonin Mâcon in 1790 and raised not far away in Milly, he simulta-neously pursued careers in literature and politics. In 1830, he waselectied into the prestigious Académie Française scholarly bodyand in 1848 became head of France’s provisional government.His poetry is timless, his ideas ahead of their time. Deeplyconnected to my Mâcon roots, he elected to retire there in 1849and host the day’s most influential personalities. His last few yearswere soured due to financial concern and he passed away in Paris in 1869.

Construit au XIIème siècle, il servait de défense àl’Abbaye de Cluny. Saccagé à la Révolution, il est ra-cheté en 1801 par Pierre de Lamartine, père dupoète. Alphonse de Lamartine n’a alors que 11 anset y reviendra régulièrement. Marié, il hérite du châ-teau qu’il revisite dans le style Troubadour. Il est en-terré dans une chapelle à l’extrémité du parc.

Built during the 12th century, this castle held a position to de-fend the Cluny Abbey. Ransacked during the French Revolu-tion, the property was purchased in 1801 by Pierre deLamartine, the poet's father. Alphonse was only 11 at the timeand would return regularly. Once married, he inherited the cas-tle and proceeded with a Troubadour style makeover. Lamar-tine is buried in the chapel along the edge of the castle grounds.

Lying at the border between the Kingdomof France and the Holy Roman-German Empire from 843 to1600, Mâcon was able to prosper thanks to the customs dutiesimposed on travellers and traders. In 1790, Mâcon was namedthe administrative seat of the Saône-et-Loire Department andsaw the birth one of its most famous native sons: Alphonse deLamartine. As a hotbed of Resistance during World War II,Mâcon would be the first city between Paris and Lyon to join thefree zone.

Cathédrale Saint-Vincent MâconUnder the orders of Napoleon the 1st, the Saint-Vincent churchwas initially renamed Saint-Louis in homage to Louis XVIII. Thiscathedral was selected to hold the funeral ceremony for Al-phonse de Lamartine on March 4, 1869.

Even before Mâcon became a city, the Saône River was beingforded ! The Saint-Laurent was among very few bridges in theregion to be left standing after World War II.

Sentinelles de calcaire émergeant du vignoble mâcon-nais, les roches de Solutré et Vergisson composentavec le Mont de Pouilly un paysage d’une beauté sai-sissante. Foulé par les hommes depuis 57 000 ans, sitearchéologique majeur, cet espace culturel et naturel re-marquable abrite une faune et une flore fragiles et pré-cieuses. L’ascension de la roche de Solutré (493 m - 1h aller/re-tour) ouvre sur des perspectives éblouissantes et un à-pic vertigineux plongeant sur le royaume duPouilly-Fuissé.

Perched like limestone sentinels surging from the Mâ-connais vineyards, the Solutré and Vergisson escarp-ments create, along with the Mont de Pouilly, abreathtaking landscape composition. Known to manfor 57,000 years, this major archaeological site har-bours a remarkable natural and cultural zone containingflora and fauna both extremely vulnerable and highlyprecious. The climb to the top of Solutré (493 m elevation - 1 hourround trip) offers a magnificent panorama and a near-vertical drop overlooking the kingdom of Pouilly-Fuisséappellation vineyards.

Le papier peint, imprimé à la planche de bois,entre dans la décoration des appartements auXVIIIème siècle et connaît un essor fulgurant aprèsla Révolution grâce aux perfectionnements de latechnique et à la qualité des dessinateurs. Dans lapremière moitié du XIXème siècle, la fabrication derevêtements muraux couvrant la totalité des mursd’une pièce, les panoramiques, ouvre un genredécoratif typiquement français qui eut un énormesuccès, tant en France qu’à l’étranger. Joseph Dufour, enfant de la Bourgogne du Sud,est l’un des plus illustres représentants de cet art,qui connaît aujourd’hui un regain de faveur.Il naît à Tramayes en 1754 dans une famille mo-deste. Intelligent, entreprenant, inventif, il apprendson métier à Lyon et installe une manufacture àMâcon en 1797. Propulsé par le succès du pa-noramique “Les Sauvages de la mer Pacifique”(dont on peut voir un exemplaire au Musée desUrsulines à Mâcon), il s’établit à Paris en 1808.Dès lors, sa notoriété se répand dans le mondeentier.

Wallpaper printed on wood planks became a fixture inapartment decorating during the 18th century and washighly in vogue after the Revolution, thanks in large part totechnical refinements and the quality of wallpaper crea-tors. During the first half of the 19th century, the produc-tion of floor-to-ceiling wall coverings, also known aspanoramic murals, launched a typically French decora-tive style that would go on to enjoy tremendous successboth domestically and abroad. Joseph Dufour, a Sou-thern Burgundy native, was one of the most brilliant ar-chetypes of this art, which today is coming back intofashion.Mr. Dufour was born in 1754 in the town of Tramayes intoa family of modest means. Intelligent, hard-working andinventive, he learned his trade in Lyon and in 1797 set upshop in Mâcon. Propelled by the success earned fromhis panoramic design of "Pacific Ocean Storm" (an exam-ple of which is hanging at the Ursulines Museum inMâcon), Joseph moved his operation in 1808 to Paris,from where his notoriety spread throughout the world.
