Le cas du Prof A: analyse
Type d’orchestration : ‘Sherpa-at-work’ Configuration didactique :

Type d’orchestration : ‘Link-screen-board’ Configuration didactique :

Type d’orchestration : ‘Technical-demo’ Configuration didactique :

A didactical configuration is an arrangement of artefacts in the environment, a configuration of the teaching setting and the artefacts involved in it.
Cf. the musical metaphor:• choosing the musical instruments to include in the
orchestra• arranging them in space and time to achieve harmony
(= convergence of mathematical discourse).

Didactical performance
Exploitation mode
An exploitation mode is the way the teacher exploits the didactical configuration for her didactical intentions: decisions on the way a task is introduced and worked, on the possible roles of the artefacts, and on the schemes and techniques to be developed.
Cf. the musical metaphor:• determining the partition for each of the musical
instruments involved.

Didactical performance
A didactical performance involves the ad hoc decisions taken while teaching, on how to actually perform in the chosen didactic configuration and exploitation mode: what question to pose now, how to do justice to (or to set aside) student input, how to deal with an unexpected aspect of the task or the tool?
Cf. the musical metaphor: • the actual musical performance

SchemesA scheme is an invariant organization of activity for a given class of situations (Vergnaud, 1996). More informally, a scheme is a more or less stable way to deal with specific situations or tasks, guided by developing knowledge. When using an artefact, a student develops a scheme of instrumented action, for example a scheme of equation solving using a graphing calculator. Such a scheme is made of gestures for using the given artefact, rules of action, and conceptual elements, both piloting the activity, and developed by this activity.
Techniques
Pragmatic stance: Techniques are the observable part of the students’ work on solving a given type of tasks (i.e., a set of organized gestures) and schemes as the cognitive foundations of these techniques that are not directly observable, but can be inferred from the regularities and patterns in students’ activities.
“A technique is a manner of solving a task and, as soon as one goes beyond the body of routine tasks for a given institution, each technique is a complex assembly of reasoning and routine work” (Artigue 2002, p. 248). Techniques are seen as carriers of knowledge and have both pragmatic and epistemic value (Lagrange 2000).
