REDUCE THE NUMBER OF MOSQUITOES AROUND YOUR HOME AND NEIGHBORHOOD

•Dispose of tin cans, plastic containers, ceramic pots or similar water-holding containers that have collected on your property.

•Remove, cover or drill holes in discarded tires. Stagnant water in tires is where many mosquitoes breed.

•Drill holes in the bottom of recycling containers left outdoors.•Have clogged roof gutters cleaned every year, particularly if the leaves from surrounding trees have a tendency to plug up the drains. Roof gutters can produce millions of mosquitoes each season.

•Turn over plastic wading pools when not in use. Stagnant water in a wading pool becomes a place for mosquitoes to breed.

•Turn over wheelbarrows and don’t let water stagnate in birdbaths. Both provide breeding habitats for domestic mosquitoes.

•Aerate ornamental pools or stock them with fish. Water gardens can become major mosquito producers if they are allowed to stagnate.

•Clean and chlorinate swimming pools not in use. Smaller containers will produce many more mosquitoes than a pool will, therefore being diligent about the small breeding sites around your house will be most effective. Mosquitoes may even breed in the water that collects on pool covers.

•Use landscaping to eliminate standing water that collects on your property. Mosquitoes may breed in any puddle that lasts for more than four days.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters • 504-247-8459

I had one more day with Add. His wife had to leave early so we went out with his daughter, Barry, and Barry’s son Mike. After searching for amberjack on the last day of the season and getting nothing to keep guess what we found. Go figure.

We also landed a very big trigger fish. Guess what also closed the same time Amberjack did.

Always nice to fish with this group. Mike was the hot hand for the day.

All we could find that day was a limit of red snapper and we had to fish all day for them along with one vermillion. These were the biggest we saw being brought into Cypress Cove Marina that day. Had a cart full of studs.

The next day I took Janelle, one of our foster daughters, out fishing for trout. The storms drove us in after less than an hour but we did manage 2 keeper trout and her biggest fish ever. Made her day!

The following day I got on Thomas’s Calcutta John and Waylon. We had a good day and took very little pictures due to the action. We did manage to get 2 and a half Almaco jacks. The sharks were showing up at will. The tax man got his cut of the trip.

All amberjack were released but were fun to catch.

As previously stated we had some good action We ended up with 3 out of 4 cobia, some nice scamp grouper, almacos, red snapper, Vermillion snapper, and some good mangrove snapper including the one across the bow we pulled up from about 250 feet. Never before got one from that deep.

Good mixed bag today.

Life is Good!Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM • Our Freedom Charters

PPSO Hosts Regional Dispatcher Training

On June 14, the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office hosted an 8-hour training class for dispatchers specific to non-emergency call handling at the Sheriff’s Office’s Chief Dominic R. Verdi, Sr. Memorial Administration & Training Facility in Belle Chasse. 20 dispatchers, representing six agencies (Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gretna Police Department, Kenner Police Department, Thibodaux Police Department, St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office, and Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office) attended the training. The goal of the class was to better prepare call center team members on how to handle non-emergency calls efficiently while maintaining professionalism. Commander Eric Becnel, the PPSO’s Director of Training, coordinated the class with PowerPhone, a Connecticut-based company that is a leader in crisis communications management and dedicated to training public safety professionals across the United States. “Dispatchers are the first point of contact for the public when they call for assistance. We are proud to have offered this specialized training to our dispatchers and fellow law enforcement agencies,” said Commander Becnel.

PowerPhone instructor Mike “Tex” Teixeira speaks with the students

A funny thing happened on the way to Golden State’s second consecutive NBA title last week: It didn’t happen. Not because of injuries or bad coaching, not because of a lack of superior offensive talent, not because of a number of things. They got stomped in three games, score-wise and physically, and outlasted in a fourth and final game because of an athletic freak of nature who finally used a poor choice of words by an otherwise stand-up Golden State All-Star, Klay Thompson, to secure Cleveland’s first basketball championship. Thompson, half of the Splash Brothers, essentially dissed LeBron James after the Warriors took the first two games of the series in Oakland and it converted the drive of a proud man who returned to his birth land to win a title for the downtrodden Cleveland fan base from a normal quest to an angry quest to win. And it worked. Thompson should have known better and the Warriors would probably have the title today. But the Dubs, who turned into the Duhhhs! in the last three games of the series, were squarely in the sights of a man whose NBA career has polarized more fans in the past 12 years than any other player in the league’s history. Forget the move to Miami, the commercials, the pre-game chalk dust routine: the self-proclaimed King proved he was a King for All Postseasons with a five-game (forget the first two contests) performance unmatched in NBA lore. The man was magnificent and LeBron haters are blind if they don’t see it.

This year, James had help from Kyrie Irving, who proved he was as good a postseason guard as the league offers. He totally outplayed everyone else on the court except for James. This year, Warrior injuries (Andrew Bogut in the post, Steph Curry still favoring his knee, Andre Iguodala with a bad back) had an effect on the team, along with a near-fatal one game suspension of Draymond Green in Game 5.

Both teams have work to do. Cleveland needs a better guard contingent; the Warriors need a real power forward to go with Green, a power forward lite because of his size. Improvement in the post will come in the draft and it looks like at least three Warriors will either not be with the team in 2016-17 or will play a backup role. In any case, don’t look for any more incredible records from the Warriors or Curry. They really can’t do much more than this past season. They won 88 games, including 15 playoff games. They played 106 games. Now Cleveland gets to remove their name from the sports trivia board and the city which once had one of their rivers catch on fire, was the setting for both Major League movies and the town that lost not one but two professional football teams to cities where they later won Super Bowls (the 1999 Rams and the 2000 and 2012 Ravens) can rest easy…until July, when they will be Trumped for several days as the Republicans come to town.

The Cavaliers finally used the Cleveland baseball Indians’ old mascot, Chief Wahoo, on the basketball court in the literal sense of the name. They certainly got a big “Wahoo!” out of their long-suffering fans back in Cleveland. Cleveland’s also the home of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Well, “Roll over, Beethoven, and tell Tchaikovsky the news”. The Cavaliers say “We Are The Champions”. Golden State says “I Can’t Get No Satisfaction”. And the long 52-year wait for Cleveland sports fans? “It’s Over”.

Don’t P.O. The King!

They choose Theriot, Cormier’s Director of Administration. Cormier had served two terms on the parish council before his election as President in 2014. The sitting council had 30 days to select and vote for an interim President or else Governor John Bel Edwards would have done so. Council members seemed determined last week that they would do the honors. The interim parish President will serve less than five months and cannot run for the office in November.

Cormier’s tenure had been filled with issues such as a loss of parish income because of declining oil prices and the attendant need to cut back or eliminate certain parish services and personnel. The parish gets its new Sheriff, Assessor and Clerk of Court next month following last year’s elections and now it receives a new parish leader. Speculation has it at least one council member could seek the presidency, which would mean another change in parish government and perhaps another special election for the council if a council member succeeds Cormier in November.

EFFECTIVE FEBRUARY 1, 2016

Amina is one of the happiest and goofiest dogs at PAWS! She is a 2 year old Retriever mix who came to PAWS as a stray. Amina is very friendly and loves to be loved on. She plays well with other dogs, but her excitement can be a little too much for calmer dogs. If you, or an existing canine family member, have the energy to play then Amina would love to meet you! She spends her time in her dog run pacing and then lights up when it’s her turn to run. She greatly values the one on one time with the staff and definitely thinks she is a lap dog! Amina is located at PAWS at 455 F. Edward Hebert Blvd. in Belle Chasse, LA and is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations.

Karina is a gorgeous 6 year old tortoiseshell girl who came to PAWS as a stray. Karina is the type of cat that likes to hang out by herself for awhile, then when she needs love, she’ll find you. She has come out of her shell so much since when she came to us and is making progress trusting people daily! As you read the newspaper or watch TV, she’d probably come sit by you to get some love. She hangs out in our General Population room with the other adult cats. You can call her independent, but she still likes affection. Karina is up-to-date on shots, micro-chipped and spayed. Come by PAWS to meet Karina Tuesday thru Saturday 12:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. and Sunday 12:00 P.M. - 3 P.M.

This is Allan and he is one handsome dude! He is very friendly, loves to play, and climb into laps. He is a big boy with a big personality. He would love to come home with you and play and cuddle and just hang out. Do you have a cat tree? He would love to come hang out on the tree and watch the world pass by. Allan has been at PAWS for over a year! He is ready for a home and we’re ready for him to find one. Allan is up-to-date on shots, neutered and micro-chipped. Can you give him a forever home?

Meet Lizzy! Lizzy is an adorable Lab mix who is right at a year old. She was brought to Animal Control with significant hair loss and sores on her skin caused by demodex. Some medical care and TLC was all she needed - she is now unrecognizable from when she was first brought in! Her hair has regrown and her personality is coming out more and more every day. She is goofy, playful, and energetic - everything a year old dog should be! Lizzy seems slow to adjust to all of the dogs here at the shelter. She is friendly but overwhelmed, but we are very happy to see a lot of progress in her daily! She is spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and currently undergoing heartworm treatment! This little girl is going to make a great addition to someone’s home so come meet her soon!

By Paula JohnsonHi, Everyone! email me! [email protected] Chasse Academy’s Farm to School

Program Named “One in a Melon”Voted Top Farm to School Program in Louisiana

USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service recently awarded Belle Chasse Academy a “One in a Melon” award for administering an exemplary farm to school program. One school district per state was selected for the award by receiving the most public nominations. “It is such an honor for our school to be chosen for this award” said Sam Downing, the School Garden Coordinator for BCA. “Our students have worked very hard to make the garden a success, and our entire staff have been very supportive. Our Head of School, Jane Dye, cast the vision for our school garden and our Food Service Director Leslie Babin worked very hard to source local food and expose our students to healthy vegetables in new and creative ways” he went on to add.

From March 15 – April 15, parents, teachers, community stakeholders, and students were invited to visit USDA’s Farm to School Census website and nominate their favorite farm to school program to receive the award. BCA is committed to sustainable, organic agricultural practices and teaching students not only about food and good nutrition but also how they, too can grow their own food. “I tell our students growing your own food is like printing your own money” said Downing. BCA began its Victory Garden program last year, its inspiration taken from the “Victory Gardens” planted by families during World War II in an effort to assist with the war effort. During the 2015 – 2016 school year the school added a large production garden and built 8 grade level raised planter beds to be used by teachers as an extension of their classroom learning environment. In the 2016 – 2017 the school plans to build an interactive Math Garden as well as add a hydroponic growing system to its greenhouse.Farm to school programs help kids form healthy habits, learn where their food comes from, and develop an understanding of the importance of nutrition and agriculture. Results of the 2015 USDA Farm to School Census show that schools with robust farm to school programs report reductions in food waste, higher school meal participation rates, and increased willingness of the students to try new foods, notably fruits and vegetables. Census results also show that U.S. schools invested nearly $800 million in local food from farmers, ranchers, fishermen, and food processors and manufacturers in the 2013- 2014 school year, which is money going directly back into local communities. “Hi, Heavy Chasse! Hi, Heavy Chasse!” - This is how the staff greets Heavy every morning and he gets so excited he literally prances in place! Heavy Chasse might just be the happiest dog in the entire world. He calmly waits in his run every day for someone to walk by or let him out to run.

Heavy Chasse!

The second he sees you he perks up and starts wiggling all over. Heavy has the kind of face that actually smiles and he adores everyone he meets, including other animals! He is currently helping Peach, one of our most untrusting and fearful canines, learn to play and we couldn’t think of anyone better for the job! Heavy is undergoing heartworm treatment and has 3 visible tumors on his body. We are establishing a treatment or surgery plan for Heavy with our veterinarian based on a biopsy and will update his information once a treatment plan has been made. In the mean time we are hoping someone falls in love with this adorable boy as quickly as the staff did! Medical issues and all, Heavy Chasse is one of the most gentle, loving, and charismatic dogs at PAWS and we sincerely hope he finds a forever family to share his wonderful personality with!

Hi Everyone, Have you had enough rain yet? I feel totally water logged. I was so glad that we didn’t get any rain for Father’s Day. It turned out to be a beautiful day, at least where I was. I was really glad we didn’t have rain because I had to drive out to AMF in Kenner for bowling Sunday evening. I really don’t like driving in the rains. On the way home the full moon was absolutely beautiful! The perfect ending to a wonderful day.

My day started out going to Buras bright and early to bring flowers to the cemetery, than to Gretna to bring flowers to another cemetery and finally back home. Since I had taken pictures of these two bouquets (one for my Dad and the other for my Father-in-Law, that is why they are just alike) I decided to show and tell you about these. I love working with flowers, it is my true passion. So let me tell you a little of what I did. I used a 5J paper mache pot and a block of floral foam. I soaked the foam in water treated with floral food. After the block was soaked I put it into the pot and trimmed the foam to sit 1 inch above the pot. I than started inserting the flowers. I decided I wanted to use irises in the bouquet. To me, an iris is a masculine flower, along with ginger, bird of paradise, and lobster claw. But they also have thick stems and I just wanted to make something to show our respect to our Dad’s, so I decided on the iris. I really iris’s. I also decided to add the red carnations, yellow salidago, tree fern, and leather leaf fern. I do like to wire some flowers when I am going be traveling a distance away with them. Especially carnations as the heads do pop off fairly easily. And the extra support helps the iris also. I am very happy to say all bouquets were delivered with all their heads intact! The rest of Father’s Day was spent working on the lamps my husband is putting together. Even though I thought he should rest and not do anything, he said he really wanted to work on the lamps. So that is exactly what we did. Till it was time to leave for AMF. Hope all you Dad’s had a wonderful Father’s Day. Well, this was my project for this time. So, what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know. But, I know it will be fun!

Following a huge groundswell of opposition and ridicule, the ivory tower set in Baton Rouge decided that the sidelines of Tiger Stadium could “be made safer” by allowing the halftime appearance of both football school’s bands on a staggered schedule. They also decided to move the visitor’s band seating closer to the field to expedite the maneuver. The uproar followed a pronouncement that no longer would visiting bands be allowed to take the hallowed field of Tiger Stadium at halftime because the sideline congestion had created a dangerous situation. In nearly 90 years of games, there had been no incidents of bands creating a hazardous condition unless you consider the LSU football players who knocked

a couple of band members from the opposing team on their keisters a few years ago when the band lallygagged on the field after their allotted time was up (or was it the LSU band that did the same to a few opposing football players who refused to yield the field following their allotted time? I really don’t remember). But it was funny and justified and none of us fans were considered haters for feeling that way.

LSU had lost one band’s appearance for this year and you can bet that several other contacts from visiting programs in the past week made a “come to Jesus” pitch to AD Joe Alleva and perhaps others in the tower. Not only would this have served as another slap in the face to LSU’s loyal fan base but it was a harbinger of things to come when LSU’s Golden Band would become tarnished by not being allowed in such places as The Swamp, Bryant/Denny, Jordan/Hare and the big concrete tavern just south of The Grove in Oxford, Ms. The one thing the tower folks are savvy about is lost revenue and this would have been a real negative spigot for the Tigers’ bottom line. So the three hundred extra seats taken up by the band that the big boys might have been counting on to sell to the seatless believers will remain with the school on a pro bono basis for the band. An appearance by Three Doors Down with less than optimum stadium acoustics was no replacement match for the loss of the Texas A&M Marching Band last November. This band’s performance is worth the price of admission; only Ohio State’s halftime performance challenges the precision and pure entertainment value of the Aggies, whose movements reportedly cannot be duplicated even by a computer. Speaking of computers, maybe its time for the guys calling the shots in Baton Rouge move away from their computers and start identifying with what Tiger fans want to see and experience in their stadium….that is, fans over the age of 22. We’re the ones paying the freakin’ bills, Joe. Don’t forget it!

The other smart move of the week was the hastily created new contract for Paul Mainieri, he of the most successful athletic program over the past ten years at LSU. Mainieri, who makes more sense in one sentence than Les Miles could ever make in a lifetime, was chafing over the fact that lesser baseball coaches were making far more moolah than he. And when Texas, with its deep pockets, came calling, it was time for the Tigers to pay up or say goodbye. Fortunately, those few cooler heads with any gravitas in the athletic area were able to come up with a seven-figure contract that should keep Mainieri in Baton Rouge for the next eight seasons. Could this be the start of a trend where the boys and girls in Istrouma Town actually grow up and become responsive? We can only dream, just like we can only dream about a real contest between two SEC qualified quarterbacks for the Tigers. When’s the last time that happened? Oh….almost forgot. No Tiger athlete has been censured or arrested during this six-month offseason for such trivial

activities such as assault, theft or breaking and entering. It evens appears the Tigers may be shut out this year in the race to see which SEC school has the most thugs or immature fools in their athletic dorms. Georgia currently leads, a legacy move following the departure of Mark Richt, he of the pure heart and mind who now plies his trade in Miami, where nary a player EVER has had an issue with the courts or the law. Things are looking up in Tigertown, where only Les Miles can keep the Tigers from winning most of their games and where the baseball team probably keeps enough talent to be a preseason favorite #1 in 2017. Basketball? Say, do we still have a basketball PROGRAM?! We have the semblance of a team and no overrated Australian super hero to lead us not to the Holy Grail but to the Holy Hell of continued mediocrity. Basketball will have to wait a while longer until its leadership parts are replaced with quality stuff. Right now, the only quieter place than the Maravich Center in November through February on campus is the Library as the Tigers limp into the 2016-2017 season with little in the cupboard. Have a nice life, Ben Simmons. We won’t remember you soon.

When the Ants Go Marching In…

The red imported fire, Solenopsis invicta, has been causing issues all throughout the southeast ever since it was introduced to Mobile, AL back in the 1940s. Since its introduction, it has currently spread to 13 states in the southern US from North Carolina to Florida and westward to parts of California. One of the major concerns of the fire ant is the sting. The worker ants can sting repeatedly and will attack anything that disturbs their mounds or food sources. The symptoms of the sting resemble burning and

itching followed by the formation of a pustule. If you have ever encountered this then you know how much of a problem these pesky creatures can be. They prefer to create mounds in wide open sunny areas like parks, lawns, and meadows. Though we may not be able to rid fire ants from the south we can however do a few things to keep them out of our yards and away from our houses.

It can be confusing when walking through the ant control section at a home improvement store with all of the different products labeled for use on ants. There are two types of products that are used to help manage fire ant populations in order to keep them under control: baits and contact insecticides. When used in combination they can efficiently reduce the number of fire ant mounds in your yard. Fire ant baits are pesticides that are combined with corn grits and soybean oil and applied to the entire area. While out foraging, worker ants will take the bait back to the mound where it is then shared with the queen, which then she is either killed or becomes infertile. The downside to using baits alone is that they take a considerable amount of time before their effects are seen. They may require several weeks and even months to be effective but 80-90% control can be achieved. Some of the more popular bait products are Amdro Fire ant Bait and Extinguish Plus. Contact insecticides are used as a fast acting control method and are applied directly to the each mound. Effects can be seen within a few hours. You will find several options to choose from including Ortho Fire Ant Killer, Garden Tech Over’n Out, Bayer Advanced Fire Ant Killer, and Bengal Ultra Dust 2X. Many of these products contain the same active ingredient so instead of asking which one is the best, the better question to ask yourself is did I apply it correctly? All the safety precautions and application instructions can be found on the product label. Be sure to read through before starting a new treatment program.

Gorgeous GingersAs we look we look for new editions to our home gardens and landscapes there are many things people look for in new plants. Some prefer an exotic flower or new color while others may prefer lush foliage or a sweet fragrance. Gingers can provide several of these qualities and with their origins in the tropical areas, they can also tolerate our warm and humid climate. Don’t be fooled though. Many of the gingers we grow in South Louisiana are cold hardy. They produce below ground stems known as rhizomes which can easily be protected with a layer of mulch to provide protection from freezing temperatures. Now is a perfect time to search out ginger plants and plant them in the garden. By planting them early in the summer, you can help them establish themselves so they are well prepared to handle the cooler months of winter. Most of the gingers we grow in South Louisiana are from the Zingiberaceae family. They come in various shapes and sizes so that every gardener can chose one that fits their space well. Peacock ginger, Kaempferia pulchra, is a low growing ground cover type plant that stays under a foot tall. Butterfly ginger, Hedychium coronarium, produces lush upright foliage between 3 and 6 feet tall and beautiful white flowers that emit a tantalizing fragrance. The closely related Scarlet ginger, H. coccineum, gets slightly taller around 7 feet and produces foot long spikes of red and orange flowers. The most commonly planted ginger throughout the entire south has got to be shell ginger, Alpinia zerumbet. These gingers are some of the tallest reaching heights between 10 and 12 feet tall. Although it may not flower consistently, the foliage alone makes for an exciting backdrop. Look for both green and variegated forms to use in your garden. There are many more gingers that could be discussed here but now that I have given you a taste, you should inquire with your local nursery to see what they have available for you.
