Welcome To Dogs On DeploymentYour help can assist our serving military!

Visit: http://dogsondeployment.org

Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their careers, the last thing they need to worry about is their pet’s care during their service commitments. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owner’s service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency. Join Dogs on Deployment’s mission in changing the lives of our military members and their pets.Dogs on Deployment aids pets of all types that belong to active duty, reservists, guard, honorably discharged veterans and their families. Our Goals• DoD aims at having DoD Boarders located near all major military bases in the United States. A military member should be able to find a DoD Boarder located within 50 miles, no matter what base they are stationed at or deploying from.• DoD will become a first resource for military members to turn to when they need long term boarding for their pets. This includes, but is not limited to, being recommended by military assistance organizations, base family support centers and animal shelters impacted by relinquished pets.• DoD plans to increase the rights and education that pet owners have while serving active duty in the military. This includes bringing light to the problem of pet relinquishment by military members to higher levels of the chain of command, and petitioning for annual, military-wide pet responsibility training. We want pets to be considered part of the family by military regulations, not disposable objects.• DoD will help promote the military-pet community by providing a database of partnered pet related businesses which support their troops through discount and incentive programs. Users will be able to search for local businesses which will provide them with affordable options for pet care.• DoD wants to help qualified military members with the cost of pet care during emergencies, and/or before and during deployments in order to promote responsible pet-ownership, providing financial assistance to get military pets spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and help with cost of pet care. This is known as our Pet Chit Program.

The fig was one of the first fruits cultivated by ancient peoples. It is a native of Asia Minor, and when taken to Greece and other Mediterranean countries, became so widely used fresh and dried that it was known as the“poor man’s food.” The fig tree was imported to the United States sometime during the 16th century, and it grows well in the South Atlantic and Gulf Coast areas and in parts of California. Figs are one of the most popular fruits grown in Southern backyards.Fruits of fig trees are hollow with the flowers located inside. The eye, or ostiole, is a small opening located at the end of the fig that enables the fig wasp to enter the fig fruit for pollination. The fig wasp does not exist in Louisiana; therefore, fruit is only produced by varieties that do not require pollination. Since the opening is not needed for the fig wasp, it has been possible to select for figs that have closed or plugged eye.A closed eye on the fruit is an important characteristic for the humid South. Figs with open eyes often sour during rainy weather. Some varieties with open eyes, however, are grown in the Southand harvested before full maturity for use in making preserves. Cold hardiness of trees is also a valuable trait, especially in North Louisiana.

For More Varieties-See our web site, http://www.lsuagcenter.com/Celeste — The popular Celeste is a hardy fig variety that grows well throughout the state. The fruit is small to medium and is purplish-bronze to light brown with a light strawberry-colored pulp. The fruit has a closed eye and ripens in late June and July. Celeste is excellent for eating fresh, canning and preserving.Southeastern Brown Turkey — Also known as Texas Everbearing, is a larger fig than Celeste. It has a copper or bronze skin and an amber pulp. A small breba crop of large figs usually ripens about two weeks before Celeste, followed by the main crop of medium-size figs two to three weeks after Celeste. The small eye has a reddish color from a very early stage. The fruit is goodfresh and is excellent for processing.Hunt — A bronze-to-brown pear-shaped fruit with a short neck and a long slender stalk, which allows the fruit to droop. The fruit is larger than Celeste with amber to pink pulp and few seeds. The fruit has a closed eye and begins to ripen about 10 days later than Celeste.Although Hunt continues to produce fruit about two weeks longer than Celeste, it is not a heavy bearer. It is, however, well-adapted to the rainier areas of Louisiana. The fresh fruit quality is similar to that of Celeste. Kadota — Sometimes known as Florentine, is a medium to large yellow fig that ripens at the same time as Hunt. The fruit has an open eye that is sealed with a honeylike substance. During rainy weather, the fruits split and may sour before becoming ripe enough to eat. Kadota is fair for eating fresh, but excellent for canning and preserves.LSU Gold — A large yellow fig with light red to pink pulp. Because the fruit has an open eye when mature, it should be picked as soon as it reaches maturity because fruit spoilage may occur during ripening in high moisture periods. LSU Gold has good quality for eating fresh andpreserving.LSU Purple — A medium-size, long, turbinate, glossy reddish to dark purple fig that has light amber to light strawberry-colored pulp and a closed eye. A heavy main crop is produced in July followed by a later crop that often lasts into December. The mild flavor is good, and the fruit has high sugar content.

TIGERS, SEC PREPARED TO TAKE SECOND BEST IN 2015

By Tony OnellionThe Southeastern Conference has had it so good for so long in college football that 2015 is going to seem like a bad hurricane year. To begin, the conference doesn’t really have the number of All American players it has been blessed with for the past 15 years. There is no one player in the league head and shoulders above any other one player in many of the other conferences. In a league that has had a number of NFL quality quarterbacks, there are none offered to grace the 2016 NFL Draft in the first round. Even the league’s greatest strength - defensive linemen and backs - are poised to have less than a stellar year going forward to the next level.

The league boasts the best collection of coaches in America, led by Nick Saban and Gus Malzain. But all this multi-million dollar talent seems to negate the overall performance of the league, especially in the East, where a decently rebuilt Georgia team is capable of ending a two-year reign of Missouri. Aye, there’s the rub. MISSOURI leading the east? What’s up with Florida, Tennessee and South Carolina? Bad program discipline, bad recruiting and over-the-hill coaching, respectively.

None of this is true in the West, where perennial powerhouse Alabama is gearing up to stop the advances of Auburn and their cutting edge offense, while Arkansas may finally prove that the Bielema move three years ago was a wise coaching decision. Not so for Texas A&M, where the post-Manziel bloom is off the rose and Hell to the Chief comes steadily from the legal quarters of LSU as the schools fight over the moves and decisions involving John Chavis, the former Tennessee and LSU defensive guru. The man who named the Honey Badger is finding out that he can’t do “whatever he wants” without a fight.

It’s refreshing to actually see resolve from the school and Les Miles, where resolve and stubborness get interchanged and confused much of the time. Meanwhile, LSU is attempting to become the first school to win a championship with only ten offensive starters, since the quarterback position is one in name only. Good luck with that.

Tight ends have always been the ignored skill position at LSU where this reporter jokes about those playing that position not really needing their hands except to hold or fend off a defender. This year could be the same for wideouts, who will be looking as desperately for a capable passer as the Democrats are looking for an alternative presidential candidate. Good luck on bothcounts. This quarterback year is similar to 2009, where Hatch and Lee hatched a less than impressive campaign for the Tigers. Thank goodness the league is weak at this position but the offensive coaches at the other schools will actually pull a non-performing quarterback before its too late to change the course of a game. LSU, of course, won’t do that, because Bo Schembechler at Michigan wouldn’t have done it and we all know that a greater college coach never walked the Earth. Right, Les?

Year Two of the Seattle/LSU Noise Machine Stadium commences in less than two months in Baton Rouge. There will be the loaded running back tandem of Fournette and Williams, perhaps with true freshman Guice in the mix, health issues notwithstanding. There will be a good to very good secondary, battle tested defensive tackles, a rapidly developing offensive line, led by Vidal Alexander and enough potential at linebacker and defensive end to give Tiger fans their usual summer football high. But football is also entertainment and Les Miles still doesn’t understand the concept. Talk about old school. This league has changed and Miles continues to fight the changes of not only the past three years but the past ten as well. He torpedoed his best team’s quest for a national championship four years ago and nothing seems to have been adjusted. The NFL loves Les but his fellow SEC coaches love him even more. For predictability is the key to overcoming superior weaponry and although LSU has been superior to just about everyone else in the SEC for the past ten years, they have been overcome ‘way too many times because of predictability.

Predictability might have caught up the rest of college football to the SEC the past two years. However, the league possesses the football minds to alter this predictability. Not all minds, mind you. Just some. Meanwhile, poor old Mississippi and Mississippi State appear ready to rejoin the bottom half of the West after such a mind-blowing first half of 2014. Despite this, Dak Prescott may be the league’s most exciting and best overall player (a Louisiana kid, by the way, playing for the Bulldogs). Things may be looking Stark again in Starkville, not StarkVegas any more, despite Prescott. And Ole Miss’s phenomenal recruitment class of two years ago is getting banged up and hasn’t had the same quality followup. Enjoy your tailgating, folks. It might be the best part of the 2015 season.

CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM Our Freedom Charters 504-247-845Life is Good! Fishing is not a matter of life or death. It’s more important than that.Capt. Lloyd Landry IV,

Outcast Fishing Charters • 504-912-8291 I went 3 days as a deckhand with Add and Shelly Goff. As I was waiting for them to arrive at the dock I noticed some young banana trees and admired the transformation from a flower to the actual fruit.

We knew the conditions were not as forecasted. The seas would not allow us to go long for tuna so we just stayed close and found some snapper. We made only 1 stop and the bite was very quick starting with a double.

Unfortunately his daughter got dangerously over heated and dehydrated so we had to cut things short. Her condition got serious quickly. She lost color, got weak, and was loosing vision. Cool wet compresses on her forehead and the back of her neck and getting water in her stabilized her condition enough to get her back in safely without outside assistance.

We managed a few fish for our efforts. We had 2 more days to go anyway.

The next day Barry and Mike showed up so Kendal stayed back at the camp. Conditions were still on the uncomfortable side and reports from the previous day not good offshore. We went looking for mangrove snapper first. Current was strong and the water was dirty but through hard work we did manage a few. As we were going to an area looking for some grouper I noticed something floating and went looking for maybe some Mahi-Mahi under it. There were no fish around it but I picked it up and notified the Coast Guard of it’s location.

We continued on looking for some grouper but found only red snapper. 2 were released in good health but I had trouble releasing the other. Although it appeared to go down in good shape we decided to go into state waters and find some red snapper we could keep. We had 1 single rig and 1 tandem grouper rig. The fishing was slow at first but I soon found the depth and the game was on. There was a boat tied up right next to us and as we were bailing on the snapper he was struggling to bring up very nice 83 pound grouper. Just the luck of the draw. Mike finished off our day with a double. A 15.4 and the other about 13-14 pounds.

LLOYD LANDRY - 504-912-8291 The end of July in Plaquemines Parish is a nerve-wracking time of the year with everyone keeping their eyes on the tropics. But it also brings us plenty of new and exciting opportunities for fishing. Trout have slowed up on the inside on the west side of the river, so turn your attention towards the Sandy Point Rigs. You can catch reds, speckled trout, white trout, cob, triple tail and many more species. You never know what’s gonna bite once you drop your lure down on the side of the rig legs. Remember, you can’t keep any redfish past the Green Monster. If unsure, ask someone and pay attention to where you are so you don’t make a mistake by getting in trouble and ruin your outing. The east side of the river is still red hot with redfish. Fish all points from Ostrich to Baptiste Collette with Gulp! or dead shrimp under a cork. Watch the thunderstorms because they sneak up on you fast this time of the year. Be safe and tight lines. LLOYD LANDRY. OUTCAST FISHING CHARTERS. 504-912-8291.

Capt. Louis “ROK” Rossignol, Venice Guide Service, 504-481-7529 • TAKE A KID FISHING!I couldn’t be happier that Brice’s birthday present from Mom and Dad was a fishing trip with me! He’ll be 13 years old, in a few more days, and for being that young, Brice fishes better than most grown men I take. He never once got stuck in the canes and he baited, casted and set the hook, many, many times. His dad and I did coach him in the beginning but this young man is a natural.Brice caught a 3’ bull shark, a 4’ alligator gar, a couple of sheepsheads, some hardheads (unfortunately), a black drum, 2 flounders, and several nice redfish, while fishing with me.It was a pleasure having you, and have a Happy Birthday. Until the next time.TAKE A KID FISHING!!!Capt. Louis Rossignol

Back at the dock a hanging and a fish cleaning party. When I got finished I went to the Coast Guard station and gave them the strut from the chopper that had gone down a few days before. I had already given them all the information on the radio earlier in the day.

The next day Shelly had some work to do and stayed back. Just the guys today. A front had gone through last night and changed things. There were still a lot of pop up storms around.

We went out looking for some weeds or maybe some tuna. It was not long before we knew we went the wrong way and the front had pushed the blue water out of the area. After some almost clean water attempts at tuna at Elf and 109 the decision was made to settle for mangrove and red snapper again. The tuna were there but not feeding.

As we pulled up to the rig we found the mangrove yesterday Mike Butler from Venice Marina pulled up and tied up where I wanted. I tied up close by and we settled in for some hot action. The conditions were not the same as the day before. There was a lot of current and the surface water was dirty. Mike had a lot of live Croaker for bait and after over a half hour only found 2 mangrove. I in the mean time was struggling with the red snapper until I found the thermocline they were in.

A 16 ounce sinker 30 seconds down was the ticket. As soon as you lock it in it was game on. If you miss the bite the bait was gone. I told Mike where the snapper were and he limited out quickly. He then gave us the rest of his live croaker and he headed for the barn. When you spend that much time there with live croaker and only 2 fish, they are not hungry.

We tried very hard but were only to find one mangrove the rest of the time. It ended up being 3 days of red snapper.

Thank you LADWF for granting us this opportunity to enjoy our state waters and it’s excellent fishery as it should be. CAPT HOOP -- OUR FREEDOM

It’s a “Sit Back Chair”– for reading, watching TV and resting

It’s a “Lift Chair”– that puts your feet safely on the floor – you’re ready to go!

It’s a “Sleep Chair”– for a comfortable and relaxing night’s sleep

It’s a “Chair”– for crafting, eating, visiting with friends and family

Wow! It has really been hot! I guess it will get a lot hotter in the coming weeks. I am certainly not looking forward to that. So, I have decided to stay in doors as much as possible and continue to clean out the craft room. I have decided to eliminate a lot of wreath making materials. Have to make room for new things that Carlea’ is interested in. I just love her creative mind. So that means I need 2 craft tables in the room so she can become as creative as she would like.

Well, on to today’s project. I decided to show you something I did for a very vivacious young lady awhile back. When she enters a room everyone notices her and that is what she wanted on her special occasion. For this wristlet we decided to go with the regular size roses instead of the sweetheart or spray roses. And the Freedom Rose accented her gown perfectly. I did decide to add some spray roses to accent the larger roses along with white limonium, black spray pearls and black feathers. Very little black sheer ribbon was added to this. And a crystal stone to the center

of the rose. I wanted the flowers to be the main attraction. We decided we would add this to a designer bracelet that she would be able to wear later after the flowers died. That way she had a keepsake of her special night.

Well, that’s it for this time. Hope you have a very crafty two weeks. So what will your next craft project be? Mine…I don’t know. But I know it will be fun.

It will also allow students to forge unique and lasting relationships with our dedicated employees and staff. At the end of session, we guarantee that attendees will truly understand and appreciate the importance the law enforcement-public partnership,” said Sheriff Greco. The goal of the Academy is to give residents and business owners a better understanding of police work and a greater awareness of the daily challenges faced by our officers. The program will be comprised of classroom and interactive instruction, as well as a variety of scenarios. In addition to an overview of all the integral divisions of the PPSO and components of the criminal justice system, class attendees will receive information and instruction on topics to include use of force, defensive tactics, narcotics enforcement, criminal investigations, crime scene/evidence gathering techniques, and much more. All of this is enhanced by the opportunity to ride-along with a deputy and engage in target practice with some of the PPSO’s specialized weapons.Citizens at least 18 years of age, with no serious criminal history, and who live or work in Plaquemines Parish are encouraged to attend. Civic and business leaders, Neighborhood Watch, and those interested in making our community a better place to live are encouraged to apply.Class size is limited. Please submit your application by Friday, August 7th to register.Additional details, including an application, can be found on the PPSO’s website, www.ppso.net, under the Information tab or picked up from the Special Services Division located behind the Belle Chasse High School, at 8344 Highway 23. Completed applications should be dropped off at the Special Services Division. For additional information or questions, please contact the Special Services Division at 504-391-2004.

Monday by appointment only

Meet Emma Lou! She is a 1 and a half year old Black-Mouth Curr. Emma Lou had a tough life before coming to PAWS, she was found by Animal Control as a very skinny and very pregnant stray. When she first came to us she only let 2 employees get anywhere near her, and she quickly came out of that shell! 1 week after coming to us, we helped her deliver 8 healthy puppies! She was the best Mamma to those babies and 7 weeks later they have all been adopted in to fantastic homes. It is now Emma Lou’s time to find her forever home that she so deserves. She is learning how to play with other dogs and she is still scared of cats. Unfortunately Emma tested positive for heart-worms, she has been treated and is now on the kennel rest portion of the treatment. She has been spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on her medical.

Meet Dom! He is a 9 year old Lab mix. Dom was found as a stray from Plaquemines Parish Animal Control. Like most dogs, he was terrified upon arriving to the shelter. After a few days Dom quickly adjusted. He now enjoys playing fetch and swimming in our baby pools when it is warm outside. Dom is learning how to play with other dogs and he doesn’t mind cats. He has been neutered, micro-chipped, and up to date on all of his medical.

Meet Nani! She is a 2 year old Lab/Chinese Shar-Pei Mix. Nani enjoys playing in the yard with her other furry friends here at PAWS. Nani also enjoys playing fetch and playing tug-of-war with our staff. She has been spayed, micro-chipped, and up to date on her shots. Nani is currently at Camp Bow Wow, so if you have any questions or need to ask about her availability, please call Camp Bow Wow at 504-891-3647.

This handsome guy is Blade. He is a friendly, outgoing guy looking for his forever home. He enjoys cuddling and being with you. He would love to hang out with you and enjoy the day. He loves all kinds of toys and being curious. Blade tested positive for FIV (Feline Aids). Because of this disease, he has to be the only cat in the home or with another cat that is FIV positive. His life expectancy is 10-12 years. Sometimes it can be longer, depending on the health of the cat. This disease is not contagious to dogs. Blade is up-to-date on shots, micro-chipped, and neutered. Can you give Blade a forever home?

Salem is a beautiful sleek black cat who has so much love to give. She came to PAWS as a stray, was adopted, then returned because a family member was allergic. She has been at PAWS ever since. Black cats are very hard to adopt out. I don’t know why. She is one of the friendliest, lovable cats here at PAWS! Salem has been at PAWS for 1308 days, that’s over 3 years! She would be a great addition to any family home. She is lovable, friendly, and would enjoy sitting on your lap. Salem is up to date on shots, micro-chipped and spayed.
