RAIS is a thoroughly Danish manufacturing company which makes wood-burning stoves, inserts and accessories in a modern production environ-ment with the latest robot technology and measuring equipment.

However, the woodburning stove concept and the company RAIS has ex-isted for more than 35 years – emerging from the former Ørskov Maskin-fabrik in Frederikshavn.

The factory was founded by the Ørskov-family who later established Ør-skov Stålskibsværft, today Orskov Yard.

In the beginning the machinery works manufactured traditional machine components, and in the middle of the 1990s it was sold and taken over by the Swiss company, Attika, and got a new name. The change to RAIS A/S marked the beginning of a new era.

Today RAIS has approximately 90 employees in development, design and manufacture of woodburning stoves and accessories.

The manufacture and distribution to the entire world takes place in Frederikshavn.

ThE SwAN LAbELStoves from RAIS carry the Scandinavian eco-label, the Swan.

This means that the stoves are among the least environmentally

damaging products in the product line. The stoves meet high demands

through the entire cycle from raw material to waste.

This is controlled by the authorities who issue the Swan label.

Hereby it is ensured that:

- emission of particles < 4 [g/kg] for free-standing stoves

- emission of particles < 4 [g/kg] for inserts

- emission of hydrocarbons OgC < 120 mg/m3

- efficiency rate is at least 75 %

However, RAIS has taken it further and have efficiency rates of up to 80%.

FIREwOOD hAS A NEUTRAL ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTWhen you use dry and clean firewood, and give it enough air, you can just about see the

smoke from the chimney. And your firing has neutral environmental impact. When trees

grow they absorb CO2 from the air. When trees rot or are burned they release the CO2. It

cancels each other out. Wood is a renewable resource. In europe, the amount of planted

trees always exceeds the amount of felled trees. The sale of fuel generates revenue which

also benefits the flora and fauna in the forests. When wood is used as fuel you save on

coal, oil and gas.

With a RAIS you get 1st class firing. The combustion is first-rate and you take extra care

of the environment.

In a modern house the fireplace is typically hidden away as an insert. either discreetly one with the wall – or pulled slightly into the wall or out into the room.

A fireplace insert can also have a more prominent position as a pronounced part of the architecture. Some choose to place it between two rooms with a door on each side. That gives an especially striking fireplace and a warm centre in the home.

The inserts can be mounted with the special Air-System from RAIS, which lets the stove get the combustion air from the outside. Thus the woodburning stove does not affect the indoor climate in low energy houses where heat, hu-midity and fresh air is regulated by ingenious technology.

It is also possible to move the heat in the home, meaning the stove heats several rooms effectively.

Here is the stove which adds a new dimension to the home. As a double sided stove for building into a wall it creates an experience in two rooms: see the fire from the kitchen – and from the sofa. unique, beautiful wide format – a design with clean lines which beautifully matches a modern home. In addition to that it has a very effective combustion which even keeps the glass clean when slumbering/with low fire. And with double glass in the doors you can place furniture close to the stove. The door can be opened either to the right or the left. It is possible to lock one of the sides. The frame can be adapted to the size required.

RAIS 2:1

RAIS 2:1

At the time of writing the Christensen family from Frederikshavn has

lived in their new low-energy house class 2015 for three months.

Three winter months that is.

In the house a new technology reigns which makes sure the heat from

earth and sun is held at 20 degrees centigrade.

- But when we come back from a toboggan run and would like an extra

two-three degrees we just put on some firewood, says the father Dan

Christensen, who lives in the house with his wife Charlotte and their

children.

The RAIS always adds a little extra heat when the family wants it. In

the mornings. When they are sitting on the sofa. Spring. Autumn.

The convection technique circulates the hot air in the room very quickly.

For other heat sources it takes about a day to change the temperature.

- When we planned to live in the low-energy house we were afraid that

the woodburning stove would generate too much heat. We had lived in

a holiday house for a while and had experienced how lovely a wood-

burning stove is to have, so we kept it. And it really does not generate

too much heat. Among other reasons because it can slow burn at a

low effect. And it separates the rooms in a lovely way. So it exceeds

expectations, says the owner of the green house.

The architect Kim Bæk from ARKInORD emphasises that the insert,

which is a RAIS 2:1, gets its combustion air from the outside through

an air duct under the floor which was established with the standard

equipment.

Furthermore, he really loves the many architectural possibilities with

the elegant and streamlined insert – i.e. because of the frame. In this

case the stove is pulled into the wall a little bit. And on one side it is sup-

plemented by a brick-built firewood storage. And you cannot go wrong

with a RAIS he says: Danish brand, a thoroughly tested quality product.

When one of our distinguished, Danish industrial design-ers decorates his rooms in a Swedish holiday cottage, it should come as no surprise that both the whole and the details are considered.

naturally, Mads Odgård lives up to his own slogan: design should be human and logical in form.It would not be considered a difficult Trivial Pursuit ques-tion to connect Odgård with the Danish companies Raad-vad, Holmegaard and Louis Poulsen. But what is the answer, when Odgård is asked why he chose a RAIS wood-burning stove?- It is a beautiful inset, RAIS 700. So, of course I chose the one that I think is best looking on the market.

In this connection beautiful means among other things the very narrow, minimalistic frame which does not make a fuss about the term wood-burning stove. not that it should not be there, on the contrary: the designer has his own idea here as well, and he builds in the RAIS in a way that pulls it 20 cm. into the room, in line with a floorboard. De-tail and whole.- When you look into the stove you do not see plates cut to measure. no, they are shaped for the stove. And that small horizontal handle works perfectly, with a small arrow on it. Any Mercedes owner would love that solution...

And then something magical happens when the gas is burned off at the top of the combustion chamber – burning off the remaining gasses; the other manufacturers cannot do that – that is impressive, says Mads Odgård. Something to think about...- And it rarely soots, and that the combustion keeps the glass clean on the very wide door. Furthermore, it can re-ally heat up if you light a fire in both sides of the combus-tion chamber.

A good thing in the cold Swedish winter.

The short story is that the designer can say exactly why he chose his RAIS. Without mentioning the word design. Because it is a matter of course, grand design.

DESIgN ICONWhen the designer Bent Falk created the first RAIS on

the sketch-pad in 1970, he probably did not know how

sustainable his design would turn out to be. He had cre-

ated an expression which not only exposed the spirit

of the times, but which also expressed something that

appealed to people all over europe for more than a gen-

eration.

When the original RAIS-design was introduced the basis

was a strong ambition to create a new type of wood-

burning stove – or fireplace which was more commonly

used at the time – which was carefully planned in form,

function and design. And they succeeded.

The shape effectively broke with previous heat sources

which were often decorated or created to look like fur-

niture. now all that was put aside for a more stringent

style without superfluous details.

The functionality determined the tripartition with the

heat chamber at the top with built-in circular draught

for better emission of heat.

In the chamber you could also bake or fry, or even heat the

teapot. Later, when barbecuing became popular the de-

signed was altered to accommodate this function. In the

middle was placed the fireplace itself with the door. natu-

rally, the firewood chamber was placed at the bottom.

The functional and pure design for both the square and

round initial models would turn out to be the role mo-

del for most other woodburning stoves manufactured

since. Bent Falk created a classic.

His designer colleague, erik Herløv, once said: ”You

have designed an archetype. That it was also the quint-

essence of quality in the workmanship probably did not

make its fame any smaller.

Since Bent Falk designed the first stoves RAIS has con-

tinued the development based on functional and pure

design.

STOVES FOR NEw hOUSESModern homes have extra insulation, they are tight and equipped with

sustainable energy from sun, wind, earth or air – plus a woodburning

stove. It gives extra heat quickly when it is needed. The other energy

sources cannot be turned up at short notice.

When the woodburning stove is lit only to give a cosy ambience, the

combustion has to function even at low effect – and keep the glass

clean. A RAIS stove also has that quality.

USES AIR FROM ThE OUTSIDE... In order to ensure an optimum indoor climate, woodburning stoves

from RAIS can use air from the outside for combustion. This technol-

ogy also makes it possible to use woodburning stoves in low-energy

houses where it is important to be able to control heat and air qual-

ity technically. This is done with the so-called Air-System, which is in-

stalled either in the floor or in the wall behind the stove. That way it is

invisible. The system is standard or available as an accessory.

It is also possible to purchase the so-called Air-Kit, which is installed

from the stove and out. A discreet cover hides the connection behind

the stove. From the outside you only see a discrete grate (not sup-

plied) in the wall.

TThe idea behind the Q-20 came as a natural exten-

sion of the design spirit in a modern house.

- Here we see that the architect typically creates a

more open house with large window sections and a

beautiful view. So we created a stove which lives up

to the idea in this mentality with large, simple sur-

faces as well as an open a beautiful view of the fire.

A woodburning stove which fits the larger rooms in

a modern house, says erwin Hauenstein, designer

for RAIS.

So, the minimalistic style with clean lines and sim-

ple means in the modern architecture is also the

recipe for the modern woodburning stove?

- Yes, exactly. The simple lines. The beautiful height

and closed shape all the way around. The width

and height of the glass door. And the perfect shape

which also characterises the back.

Furthermore, there was a wish to be able to place

the stove in the middle of the room and to be able

to turn it as needed.

- We not only wanted good design. Form and func-

tion also had to come together.

And the Q-20 was also required to represent the

best possible combustion technology and the low-

est possible emission of residue out of respect for

the environment. Furthermore, it also had to be

frugal in fuel consumption, says erwin Hauenstein.

Finally – after all the high-tech challenges – there

was one basic requirement to meet: The handle had

to be placed in the most practical place and live up

to the ambitions for design and function. It sounds

simple, but it rarely is...

But even that succeeded, and it was a real pleasure

when the Q-20 was a reality and ready for the cus-

tomers, says head designer erwin Hauenstein.

All RAIS woodburning stoves have a streamlined, classic design with an eye to the modern home, functional and simple.

Our wide selection of models represents a range of choi-ces for almost any need. From castle to a detached house and flat, and even the small wooden holiday house. See the following pages. get more ideas on our website - www.rais.dk.

All models can be connected to the Air-System, ensuring that the stove gets the combustion air from the outside.

The optimised combustion in RAIS stoves gives a number of advantages: clean glass due to a special air system, great figures in connection with environmental consid-eration, good utilisation of the fuel and good combustion even at low firing.

Added to this, is the air-cooled handle which makes the woodburning stove user friendly – it is not necessary to use a glove.

The artists Inger and Jørgen Pedersen from Herning just wanted to replace the woodburning stove in their living room.As they were walking around the stove shop among all the available models, they actually felt that one could be as good as the other. But when the dealer lit a RAIS Pilar something happened.- It has an amazing view of the flames, says Inger Pedersen. At the same time they saw a photo of the oxidised version which has a rusty red colour. At home the couple has just finished building their 450 square meter stu-dio with between 3 and 6 metres to

the ceiling, copper on the outside and brown steel structure on the inside.- We really fell in love with that stove. We thought about the price – but there was no way around it… now it is an invaluable part of the studio – I really, really love it.When Inger starts work in her smaller part of the room, she lights a fire in the Pilar and turns the fire so it faces her. It is almost a ritual. When the flames start moving behind the window it gives heat and a sense of peace. Peace to work and well-being.- Inger wants a bit higher temperatures than I do, so it is perfect that we can face it toward her corner.

And then when we have visitors for a lecture about art we turn it towards the room. Then it just stands in the back-ground emitting heat and life, says Jørgen Pedersen.Since the studio is thoroughly insu-lated and has a lot of light coming in through the large windows, making the heat from the windows, from the pellet burner and the Pilar sufficient enough to heat the studio for a substantial part of the year without the use of the floor heating. So here the stove is part of the heat supply and of the creative atmosphere in the room. But not only that.- no, because I think it is so beautiful

and striking, brilliantly constructed in its high, slim shape with a pipe to the ceiling, that it is part of the art – it is a sculpture in its own right, says Inger Pedersen.

It should also be mentioned that the couple later bought a new RAIS for the living room, a Q-20.

The new integrated stoves are a strong architectural tool which combines the charm of the fireplace,

the usefulness of the woodburning stove and the architectural aesthetic, and I am thrilled about the

hEAT ACCUMULATIONFinnish natural stones retain the heat...

From ancient times it has been a well-established fact that heated stones re-tain the heat. The same thing happens when you line a woodburning stove with Finnish natural stone: the stove accumulates the heat and gives off radiant heat for a long time, thereby utilising the firewood better.

For example: you get eight hours of afterheat if you place four kg of firewood in a PILAR 172 equipped with 94 kg of stone.

natural stone is also available for Q-20 and Avant, also known as soapstone.

The models geO and POLeO Soapstone are covered on the outside with stone.

For example: once the RAIS geO has been heated it will slowly give off its heat for 15 hours.

Practical, simple and timeless steel

rack for e.g. firewood. Timeless and

simple. High-quality product.

Can also be turned over to be used

as a bench or similar with cushions.

Available in two versions – with two

or three rooms.

RAIS CONVECTION gRATESAll RAIS products are created to achieve a quality design. That also applies

to our accessories – e.g. convection grates which are built-in with an insert.

Inserts represent two types of convection. Partly the convection which is

built into the stove, and partly the convection which, according to regula-

tions, must be established when building-in the stove – beneath and above

the stove.

For inserts there is a minimum convection area which must be respected de-

pending on the type of material used. This way it is ensured that the stove

will be air cooled, thereby preventing overheating of the wall.

In order to make it easy to meet the criteria RAIS has designed convection

boxes with grills that fit the size of the individual inserts and insets Q-BIC

Insert, RAIS 2:1 and RAIS 700. We also have convection grates which fit the

size of the stoves. This way a whole is created when the grills are flush with

the insert.

The grills are available in two versions – with long grooves and with holes.

vertically the grill is the equivalent of a course, bricks with joints.
