Identifying communication issues in this entire scenario
0he communication issues %ithin the scenario include errors from Marilyn and *r+ #+
Marilyn is presenting nonver2al communication through her unhappiness and 2ody language+ 3t
has only 2een four %eeks %ith *r+ #, and Marilyn is already feeling unhappy %ith her position+
*r+ # is e4cluding Marilyn from the line of communication5 ver2al and %ritten+ !e has assumed
many of the roles that Marilyn had previous, this sent a nonver2al message of lack of trust+ *r+
# and Marilyn need to have a serious conversation a2out the role of Marilyn as the assistant+ 0he
pro2lem in this situation is %ith *r+ # 2eing the only one that is communicating his %ants+ 6or
an effective relationship %ith communication each person needs to communicate efficiently+
(1) How can Marilyn get clarity about her own wants and desires for her roles and
involvement in what goes on in Neurology?
Marilyn needs to communicate her %ants and desires a2out her roles through a private
meeting %ith *r+ #+ he should %rite do%n every item that she use to do for the previous Chief+
he should plan %hat she %ants to say+ *uring the meeting she should speak precisely %ith fe%
pauses, ho%ever allo% for *r+ # to inter7ect %hen needed+ he should not 2ring up fact that she
had 2een part of the department revie%s due to the sensitivity of information that is presented
during annual revie%s+ Marilyn should re8uest a ne%, %ritten 7o2 description and assigned tasks
for clarification of her role as an office assistant+
(2) How can she work to meet the desires she has given the !new culture" in the
de#artment?
6irst, she needs to change her attitude to%ard her ne% 2oss and the situation in general+
he needs to 2ecome part of the solution to the chaotic environment that *r+ # is used to, and

come to the office ready to learn and to share the kno%ledge that she has ac8uired in the past five
years+ econd, to 2e a2le to accomplish her goals in mind %hich are very similar to *r+
Christophers, it is important that she %ins *r+ #s respect and attention, so she can guide him to
a more effective organi;ed environment instead of the chaotic and restless one he is used to+
<er2al and nonver2al communication plays a 2ig part in accomplishing her goals, she %as
sho%ing sadness and %as hopeless, and therefore her ne% 2oss %as reading these signs from her
demeanor, %hich gives place to *r+ #s possi2le resolution to not engage in any conversation
%ith her+ 3n her conversation %ith her 2oss she needs to open herself to listen, to 2e a2le to help
his routine to 2e 2etter organi;ed, this means, respectfully understanding his standards too+
Constant communication %ill 2e imminent to accomplish these goals and have a 2etter
relationship %ith her 2oss+ )hen a person has %on the trust of the other, it is easier to make
suggestions that %ill 2e valua2le to enrich the %ork performance+
($) %hat can Marilyn do to get across her concerns to &r' ? How should she go about
doing it? hould she rehearse? *r should she +ust !shoot from the hi#"?
Marilyn has 2ecome so over%helmed %ith not 2eing a2le to fully participate in her
previous 7o2 duties that she %ants to finally confront the ne% chief to discuss her concerns of the
office+ Marilyn has to 2e careful of the %ay she confronts her ne% chief 2ecause if she comes
across rude she could give the ne% chief a negative impression of her %hich could ultimately
7eopardi;e her position+ 0he 2est recommendation for Marilyn %ould 2e to rehearse the key
points of her discussion and the %ay she is going to present her concerns rather than go in 2lindly
and leading her discussion 2ased on her rage and emotion+ Marilyn should have a face to face
discussion %ith the ne% chief since he appreciates personal meetings and address her concerns+
he should inform the ne% chief that she appreciates the ne% changes he has made for the

department ho%ever she feels as though she has not 2een a2le to fully assist the ne% chief as he
needs+ At this time she can asks the ne% chief %hat his e4pectations of her are and ho% she could
2etter assist him %ith his daily %ork tasks+ he could also present her ideas of ho% she feels she
could help the ne% chief and see if he o27ects or accepts her ideas+
=&> %hat ty#e of conversation has the best chance of giving her the outcome she wants?
6or Marilyn to 2e happy at %ork she needs to sit do%n and talk to her ne% 2oss+ !e does
have an open door policy+ Marilyn should start %ith talking to her 2oss a2out %hat she is feeling+
he should address the concerns as soon as possi2le+ !er conversation should also 2e direct and
2e open to change on her part+ he must 2e %illing to discuss the changes+ he should have some
notes to make sure she covers everything that she needs to discuss+ he should 2e clear on the
%ay she feels a2out ho% the %ork is 2eing done+
