MADHVACHARYA
Madhvacharya was a Hindu philosopher
born in 1238 and disappeared in 1317. He was an
incarnation of the wind god Vayu. Once, before he
was born, his parents Bhatta and Vedavati went to
the market and saw a man climb a flag pole in front
of a temple, and announce that Vayu would be
born to them. Madhvacharya was born soon
thereafter, and was named Vasudeva at birth.
Madhvacharya was a prodigy and excelled
in studies, running, swimming, wrestling, and
many other things. Once one of his students was
attacked by a tiger, and Madhvacharya wrestled
the tiger. The tiger went away with its tail in
between its legs.
Madhavacharya was the chief proponent of
the Dvaita school of Vedanta, and established the
Krishna Mutt at Udupi. Dvaita’s main teaching is
the eternal difference between Brahman and
Atman (the individual soul). Hindus believe that
Atman is part of Brahman, just like a drop of water
is part of the ocean. The Dvaita school is a
proponent of Vaishnavism, and identifies Lord
Vishnu as Parabrahman or the Supreme Self.
Madhvacharya composed works on philosophy of
Tattva-vada and commentaries on the Vedas,
Upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita and the Brahma
Sutras. Through his life, Madhvacharya taught
followers of Sanatana Dharma many valuable
lessons.

NAYANMARS
Nayanmars were a group of 63 Shaivite saints who lived in the 6th through 8th centuries. They were a very diverse set of saints who had one thing in common: their intense devotion to Lord Shiva. Their lifestyles differed greatly, because they were both men and women, both nobility and peasants.
An important fact to note is that although there were many men in this set of saints, there were only 3 women, and their status was usually honorary, such as Isaignaniyaar, who was the mother of the Nayanmar Sundarar (he compiled the list of Nayanmars). Also vital is the fact that some of these Nayanmars were converted into Hinduism such as Ninra Seer Nedumaara. He was originally a Jain, but 2 other Nayanmars influenced him to become a Hindu when they cured a sickness that Jain doctors could not.
Each Nayanmar worshipped Lord Shiva in their own way. One of them, a saint called Sakkiya, unconsciously threw a stone at a lingam while he was ardently worshipping Shiva. Afterwards, Sakkiya felt that it was Shiva’s wish that he should worship the lingam by throwing a stone at it daily. This shows that Shiva can be prayed
to in any way.
