Chopin’s musical imagination may have been
fired by a variety of disparate sources, from
national dances and styles of his native
Poland to bel canto vocal filigree, but as a
composer writing in an age devoted to liter-
ary evocations and extra-musical referenc-
es, he stands out for resisting any specific
programmes or allusions in his music. Thefour Ballades that he wrote at intervals over
the course of a decade, f rom t he mid-1830 s
to 1843, are a case in point . N o established
instrumental form is implied in his use of the
ter m “ballade”, but i t may have been prompt-
ed by the sort of narrative number that sets
out the back-story to an operatic plot, such
as the mins trel’s explanator y ballade “Jadisrégnait en Normandie” at the beginning
of Meyerbeer’s phenomenally success-
ful Robert le diable of 1831. Nevertheless,
Chopin’s formal thinking is profoundly clas-
sical, and the pillars of sonata form remain
embedded in the musical structure. If there
is, as Schumann later suggested, a literary
source at all, it may lie in the works of the
Polish Romantic poet Adam Mickiewicz,
but the connections bet ween the music and the supposed poe tic sources , per sist entl y
explored by commentators over the years,
remain a matter of speculation.
The G minor firs t ballade, op. 23, does
open with an apparently operatic gesture: a
sonorous recitative in octaves, in prepara-
tion for t he main aria, where the compound
time signature common to all the piano bal-lades (and the Meyerbeer number) takes
over. An operatic ballade is essentially
