MNS is a switchgear system, which is based on long term expertise and experience, reliable and extensively tested technology, as well as carefully selected modular components.
This makes MNS, undoubtedly, the most flexible and expandable switchgear systemon the market.
Wide scope of applications
MNS is tailored according to the specific needs of ourcustomers. Its application areas are metal, petrochemicaland pulp and paper industry, power plants, marine- andoff-shore applications, as well as demanding infrastructurebuilding requirements.
Expertise
The switchgear can be delivered as a stand aloneproduct or a part of a total project. ABB expertise is atyour service for both the engineering of low voltageswitchgear, or for the electrification of large plants.By contacting ABB already in the pre-engineeringphase, we will help you to find the most cost efficienttechnical solutions.
Minimal life cycle costs
As a leading manufacturer of electrotechnical equipment,ABB invests in customer-focused product developmentand long-term customer service. A comprehensivemaintenance network and fast spare part service keepthe wheels turning.
Reliability
Reliability of power distribution is the keyword in allprocess control. For example, in marine applicationsoperational reliability is extremely important, whenthe processes run in severe conditions and a powerfailure means high economical losses, or could evenlead to dangerous outages. The ABB worldwide servicenetwork provides assistance wherever you are.

Personnel Safety and Operational Reliability
Safety for the operating and maintenance personnel is the key issue in our development efforts.New designs emphazise safety, and diversified testing and verification procedures are broughtinto the focus when we supply our customers with the safest possible switchgear system.
High-quality materials
In the selection of materials for MNS, special attentionhas been paid to environmental friendliness and recycling.
The frame parts are made of zinc galvanized sheet steel. The busbar material is aluminium or copper dependingon the rated current. All plastic materials are recyclable.
Safe design
The MNS switchgear is divided into separate equipment, busbar and cable compartments (Form 4). The designsolutions used (Arc Free Zones) clearly decrease thepossibility of damages occurring. In the unlikely event ofarcing, damage is localized in the compartment wherethe arc occurred. This allows fast repair andrecommissioning of the switchgear.
Extensive tests
The safety of the MNS switchgear has been verifiedby extensive type and arc tests according to the IECstandards. Additional tests confirm the suitability ofMNS for seismic areas, shelters and marineapplications.
High-quality of end product
The whole manufacturing process ofMNS is certifiedaccording to an authorized quality system, based on theinternational quality standard ISO 9001. The quality systemin the manufacturing process was introduced as earlyas in 1991. Annual quality audits are performed byan independent inspection organization.

Functional Economy
The MNS switchgear system offers a wide range of solutions for space saving and serviceability. The selection of switchgear according to its function helps you to achieve significant savings inthe switchgear room and switchgear life cycle costs, as well as in the total investments.
Ready modular solutions
The two most common main switching devices usedin MNS switchgear are a load switch breaker or an aircircuit-breaker. Earthing switches are used for earthing.
Auxiliary devices are located in separate compartmentsclose to the feeder cubicle.
Fixed outgoing units (F)
The MNS switchgear with fixed outgoing units andscrew and bolt connections has proved to be a reliableand maintenance-free solution. The front door is locked, when the circuit breaker is in the I-position. The doorcan be opened for visual inspection of the equipmentwithout interrupting the supply by using a speciallydesigned method.
Removable outgoing units (R)
The MNS switchgear with removable units is aninexpensive solution. The fuse switch is equipped withan integrated plug-in contact block for the connectionto the busbar system. In this solution the units can be changed or addedwhen the switchgear is live.
Withdrawable outgoing units (W)
In the MNS switchgear with withdrawable outgoingunits, all electric connections are made using slidecontacts, which makes fast changing or adding ofunits possible. This solution undoubtedly savesmore space than other solutions.

Optimal Life Cycle Costs
The initial investment is only one part of the total switchgear life cycle costs. In the designand development ofMNS, special attention has been paid to low service, maintenanceand disposal costs.
Optimal current-carrying conductors
The current-carrying conductors ofMNS are madeof copper or aluminium bars. The choice of materialdepends on the load of conductors, and most of all,the environmental conditions.
Aluminium has many advantages compared with copper:- lightness- corrosion resistance without special coating
- environmental friendliness- lower price
Busbars with slide contacts are made of tinned copper. This achieves:- good corrosion resistance- good sliding properties
High quality components
MNS solutions are based on high quality ABBcomponents, with availability ensured all over theworld. The components have passed extensive testingand attention has been paid to the continuity oftheir use as well as their replaceability in productsof new generations.
Environmental friendliness
A Life Cycle Analysis has been made on MNSswitchgear in order to ensure that it can be safelyremoved from service and the materials recycledas much as possible. None of the materials usedcreates a problem for the environment.

IndustrialIT- Information Technology in the MNS Low Voltage Switchgear System
Today large technological processes to be controlled and monitored have developed intoprocess area automation, in which asynchronous motors, automation equipment and interfacesform a functional entity.
All process control functions, especially protection, control and collection of information
from asynchronous motors and associated units, as well as communication interfaces, can befully tested prior to commissioning. This ensures the integrity and simplicity of the product, and the functioning of IndustrialITconnections can be ensured beforehand. Commissioningbecomes faster and in addition, the total responsibility for the operations, minimization of errorsand clearly specified interfaces benefit all parties. The supplier handles the delivery faster, errors are minimized, the customer can start production sooner and different planningphases are intensified.
The process area is seen by the user as a server to which wired or wireless technologycan be connected. As data security and authentication is included, data from the process areacan be utilized safely and reliably by means of standard devices.

ICU (INSUM Communication Unit) is a modular unit, which links the internal buses together and translatesthe communication protocol to the process control systemvia TCP/ IP Ethernet, Modbus RTU or Profibus DP, LON.
The internal buses are connected to a maximum of fourrouters. Each of the four switchgear buses can have upto 32 motors connected. In the protocol translation unit(Gateway) the protocol is translated for the processcontrol system.
By means of a control, protection and monitoring system, based on bus technology and ensuringthe uptime of motor starters so vital for the technological process, the uptime of the total processis improved. Investment costs for the automation and electrification are reduced significantly. In addition, cost savings are achieved through optimization of design, directed preventivemaintenance, as well as the reduction of spare part stocks. The INSUM System saves material,
work and space. No oversizing of motor starters, cablings or motors is required.
MCU (Motor Control Unit) is located in each motor starter to beprotected. The starter type is selected according to its use.
MMI (Man Machine Interface) is installed on the door ofthe switchgear and used for the control and collection ofinformation from the system units. Parameters of motorstarters and gateways can also be changed or newparameters entered for new units to be integrated intothe system.
