(Eph. 2:14-22) Brethren… For He is our peace; He has made both into one and has broken the dividing wall, hostili-ty, through His flesh. His teaching has abolished the Commandments of the Law, that He might create in Himself a new man in place of the two, thus mak-ing peace, that He might reconcile both groups to God in one body through the cross, thus putting to death that hostility through it. A NOTE REGARDING COMMUNION – The Holy Orthodox Church under-stands Communion to mean that we have all things in common, sharing an identical Faith, and only those who are members of the Orthodox Church and who have prepared themselves through prayer, fasting and recent confession may participate in Holy Communion. ЯК НАМ РОЗПОДІЛИТИ ЧАС НАШОГО ЖИТТЯ

Прокинувшись вранці, лиш тільки засяє сонце і дасть нам змогу почати вико-нувати покладені на нас обов’язки, ми перш за все повинні подякувати Господу Богу, Який зберіг нас минулої ночі здоровими і неушкодженими, за Його невимо-вну милість до нас. А потім із оновленими силами приступимо до виконання ко-рисного не тільки для нас, але і для інших, починаючи кожну справу із благосло-вення і молитви.

Ми повинні намагатися в усіх обставинах чинити так, щоб закликати на себе Боже благословення і щоб наше серце завжди було зігріте любов’ю до Творця і Промислителя усього. Тому, коли настане полудень і наші сили, зміцнені нічним спокоєм, знову дещо вичерпаються і потребуватимуть підкріплення, постарає-

мося пригадати всі наші вчинки, які ми зробили зранку до цього часу, подумаємо і оцінимо, чи настільки вони корисні для нас, суспільства і Батьківщини, щоб остання давала нам поживу, оскільки їжа є нагорода за нашу працю, і через це, за словами апостола Павла, хто не працює, нехай не їсть (2 Сол. 3, 10). Немає такої людини, яка б могла себе вважати вільною від праці, тому що на кожному лежать обов’язки: господарчі, сімейні і щодо себе самого, тож для того, хто живе правильно, не може залишитися часу на ледарство і порожні слова. А тому ми повинні якомога суворіше провіряти себе в тому, як витрачаємо час. Для цього, завершивши день, поміркуємо: скільки ми зробили добра? Чи не знехтували чи-мось, чи не зашкодили комусь, чи не зробили щось безрозсудно? І якщо за щось нас буде докоряти сумління, подумаємо, у чому ми повинні себе виправи-ти. Зробимо із самих наших вчинків правило обережності, і якщо у чомусь буде-мо зустрічати труднощі, то звернемося у молитві до Господа Бога, що подає нам розум і сили, і з особливою старанністю попросимо Його допомоги. “One should not seek among others the truth that can be easily gotten from the Church. For in her, as in a rich treasury, the apostles have placed all that pertains to truth, so that everyone can drink this beverage of life. She is the door of life.” — + St. Irenaeus of Lyons, Against Heresies

From the parable, it is quite certain that souls when they leave the body do not still linger here, but are forthwith led away. And hear how it is shown: ‘It came to pass,’ it is said, ‘that he died, and was carried away by the angels.’

Not the souls of the just only, but al-so those of sinners are led away.

This also is clear from the case of another rich man. For when his land brought forth abundantly, he said within himself, ‘What shall I do? I will pull down my barns and build great-er,'(Luke xii. 18.) Than this state of mind nothing could be more wretched. He did in truth pull down his barns; for secure storehouses are not built with walls of stone; they are ‘the mouths of the poor.’ But this man neglecting these, was busy about stone walls. What, however, did God say to him? ‘Thou fool, this night shall they require thy soul of thee.’

Mark also: in one passage it is said that the soul is car-ried away by angels; in the other, that ‘they require it;’ and in the latter case they lead it away as a prisoner; in the former, they guard and conduct it as a crowned victor. And like as in the arena a combatant, having received many wounds, is drenched with blood; his head being then encircled with a crown, those who stand ready by the spot take him up, and with great applause and praise they bear him home amid shouting and admiration.

In this way the angels on that occasion led Lazarus also away. But in the other in-stance dreadful powers, probably sent for that purpose, required the soul. For it is not of its own accord that the soul departs this life; indeed, it is not able. For if when we travel from one city to another we need guides, much more does the soul stand in want of those who can conduct it, when it is separated from the flesh, and is entering upon the future state of existence. — + St. John Chrysostom, Four Discourses, Chiefly on the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, Discourse 2.1-2

A brother asked one of the Fathers, What shall I do? My thoughts are always turned to lust without allowing me an hour’s respite, and my soul is tormented by it. He said to him, Every time the demons suggest these thoughts to you, do not argue with them. For the activity of demons always is to suggest, and suggestions are not sins, for they cannot compel; but it rests with you to welcome them, or not to wel-come them. Do you know what the Midianites did? They adorned their daughters

and presented them to the Israelites. They did not compel an-yone, but those who consented, sinned with them, while the others were enraged and put them to death. It is the same with thoughts.

The brother answered the old man, What shall I do, then, for I am weak and passion overcomes me? He said to him, Watch your thoughts, and every time they begin to say some-thing to you, do not answer them but rise and pray; kneel down, saying, Son of God, have mercy on me.

Then the brother said to him, Look, Abba, I meditate, and there is no compunction in my heart because I do not understand the meaning of the words. The other said to him, Be content to meditate. Indeed, I have learned that Abba Poemen and many other Fathers uttered the following saying, The magician does not understand the meaning of the words which he pronounces, but the wild animal who hears it understands, submits, and bows to it. So it is with us also; even if we do not understand the meaning of the words we are saying, when the demons hear them, they take fright and go away.
