Au décès d’Emile Descombes, en 1897, Perret s’associe àLouis Edouard Berthoud pourfabriquer des montres de pochecomplètes. Un an plus tard, Perret& Berthoud présente l’UniversalWatch Extra, chronographe dotéd’un compteur de 30 minutes.Avec son chronographe-bracelet,produit en 1917, l’entreprise sera lapremière à réagir à la disparitionprogressive de la montre depoche… et à se tailler une place dechoix dans l’histoire de l’horlogerie.

Upon the death of EmileDescombes, in 1897, Perret asso-ciated with Louis Edouard Berthoudto make complete pocket-watches.A year later, Perret and Berthoudpresented a chronograph equippedwith a 30-minute chronograph.With its first wristworn chrono-graph, produced in 1917, the com-pany was the first to react to thegradual disappearance of thepocket-watch… and to carve itselfa significant place in watchmakinghistory.

Désormais installée à Genève, l’en-treprise prend le nom d’UniversalWatch Co. Ltd. et connaît un belessor sous la direction de RaoulPerret, fils du fondateur. Lesmontres sont signées «UniversalGenève» et se distinguent par leurélégance et leur technicité. Un styleest né, et avec lui des modèles

de légende. Que ce soit avec leCompax, l’Aero-Compax ou leTri-Compax (1930-40), la Polerouter(1954) ou le Microtor UG 66 (1966),la marque se singularise par lanouveauté de ses modèles et deses mouvements.

Now relocated in Geneva, the com-pany was renamed Universal WatchCo. Ltd and enjoyed a spectacularboom period under the leadershipof the founder’s son, Raoul Perret.The watches carried the “UniversalGenève” signature and were distin-guished by their elegance and theirtechnical sophistication.

A style was born, and with it anumber of legendary models.Whether through the Compax,the Aero-Compax, the Tri-Compax(1930-40), the Polerouter (1954)or the Microrotor UG 66 (1966),the brand stood out for the novelinventiveness of its models andmovements.

From the 1960s onwards, in keep-ing with its spirit of innovation,Universal Genève played a pioneer-ing role in the wave of quartz move-ments, and in 1975 launched theworld’s thinnest calibre of this type.During the 1980s and 1990s, thebrand enjoyed an impressive inter-national reputation and a strongpresence on markets such asSouth-East Asia, the Middle Eastand Italy.

Headed since 2005 by a passion-ately dedicated management teambuilding on a strategy of measureddevelopment, Universal Genève issteadily reinforcing its collectionand reaffirming its style. While the2005 and 2006 models intelligentlyrevisited the House design andfaithfully reflect the UniversalGenève spirit, the arrival of the newMicrotor and the series productionof the Calibre UG 101 definitivelyconfirm the brand renewal.

Après lamythologie et l’universalité, la nouvellecollection s’oriente vers un retour auxsources, dans les deux sens du terme.Le design des nouveautés joue les traitsd’union avec celui des garde-temps histo -riques de la marque, avec pour thèmel’eau, symbole de vie et de plénitude.

Aux familles de garde-temps pourhommes lancées en 2006 – Microtor UG100, Okeanos Compax, Okeanos Aero-Compax et Okeanos Moon Chronograph– s’ajoutent des nouveautés toujoursplus horlogères: le Microtor UG 101 enacier, le chronographe Uni-Timer et leTimer Chronograph. Si les modèles pourhommes se font plus horlogers, l’Anthease fait plus joaillière avec une versionsertie de 46 diamants taille brillant etune de 132 diamants taille brillant,assemblées notamment sur des brace-lets en galuchat.

The Universal Genève style is immedi-ately recognisable. This is the third yearthat the in-house designers are dedicat-ing their talents to giving it a new lease onlife. After the themes of mythology anduniversality, the new collection sees areturn to roots, with the design of the newreleases reflecting that of the brand’shistorical timepieces and inspired bywater – a symbol of life and plenitude.

The men’s watch lines launched in 2006– Microtor UG 100, Okeanos Compax,Okeanos Aero-Compax and OkeanosMoon Chronograph – are now enrichedby even more distinctly horological newmodels: the Microtor UG 101 in steel,the Uni-Timer chronograph and theTimer Chronograph. Les boîtes desmontres hommes ont vu leurs formesredessinées afin d’offrir une esthétiqueplus contemporaine et une plus grandeergonomie: les cornes ont été légère-ment allongées et les lunettes affinées,laissant au cadran une plus grandeouverture. Tous les modèles Uni-Timer,Timer Chronograph et Moon Chronographsont équipés d’un nouveau rotor revidé,gravé en relief et doré, dont le décor –un soleil – est cohérent avec le thème del’universalité cher à la marque.

Petit détail esthétique non négligeable, leSuperluminova fait son apparition sur lesaiguilles, conférant à certains modèlesun aspect sport chic. Enfin, UniversalGenève a conçu pour son fermoirdéployant un design de boucle exclusif:une coiffe intégrant deux boutons-poussoirs latéraux. All models in the 2007/2008 collectionbenefit from the love of noble materialsand of perfect workmanship cherishedby Universal Genève. The cases of themen’s watches have been treated toredesigned shapes in order to give thema more contemporary aesthetic appealand enhanced ergonomics: the lugs havebeen slightly extended and the bezelstrimmed down to ensure a broaderdial opening. All the Uni-Timer, TimerChronograph and the Moon Chronographmodels are equipped with a newhollowed, relief-engraved and gilded rotorfeaturing a sun motif entirely consistentwith the theme of universality upheld by

the brand. Representing a significantnew aesthetic detail, the hands ofsome models are now coated withSuperluminova to give them a sportingchic look. Finally, Universal Genève hasdesigned an exclusive buckle design forits folding clasp: a kind of cap incorpo -rating two lateral pushbuttons. Unique inthat is specially built for the brand, thiscap represents a token of quality and agenuine signature feature. Its designexactly echoes that of the pin buckle onthe gold models in the 2006 collection.

The Universal Genève watchmak-ers were among the pioneers inthe development of self-windingmovements, particularly bymeans of an integrated micro-oscillating weight that madethese calibres ultra-thin and gavethem a unique aura of elegance.In the 1930s, the watchmakers ofthe Manufacture presented amen’s wristwatch equipped withthe UG 138 movement and dis-playing the hours, minutes andseconds.

Le 27 mai 1955, l’entreprise dépose lebrevet no 329805 pour une montre àremontoir automatique très plate com-prenant une micro-masse avec axe derotation excentré: le 1er Microtor (calibreUG 215) produit par Universal Genèveest né. Il n’affiche que les heures et lesminutes. Cette innovation technologiquemajeure est rendue possible par les pro-portions parfaites des mécanismes dedémultiplication du remontoir automa-tique. La micro-masse, couplée à unbarillet de grand diamètre et pivotantdans les 2 sens, permet une réserve demarche de près de 48 heures.

La technologie du Microtor ne cessed’être améliorée. Ainsi le 30 janvier 1957la Manufacture dépose un nouveau bre-vet pour un mouvement automatiqueavec mobile de seconde au centre, com-prenant une masse rotative avec axeexcentré. Ce mouvement dispose d’unsystème de remontage automatiquesimplifié, réduit l’épaisseur et améliore leconfort au porté grâce à l’absence dechoc au niveau de la masse oscillante.Le réglage fin est néanmoins absent.

On May 27 th 1955, the company filed apatent Nr 329805 for an extremely thinself-winding watch comprising a micro-oscillating weight with an off-centredrotation axis: the first Microtor (CalibreUG 215) produced by Universal Genèvewas born. It displayed only the hoursand minutes. This major technologicalinnovation was made possible by theperfect proportions of the mechanismsdedicated to the reduction of the auto-matic winding. The micro-oscillatingweight, coupled with a large-diameterbarrel pivoting in both directions,ensured a power reserve of around48 hours.

The Microtor technology was consis-tently improved. On January 30 th 1957,the Manufacture filed a second patentfor a self-winding movement with centralseconds wheel and pinion, comprisinga rotating oscillating weight with off-centred axis. This movement featured asimplified self-winding system, reducingthe thickness of the movement andenhancing wearer comfort thanks to theabsence of shocks on the level of theoscillating weight. It did not howeverenable fine adjustment.

En 1966, à la Foire de Bâle, UniversalGenève présente une nouvelle gammede montres équipées du calibre automa-tique Microtor le plus plat du monde – 28 mm de diamètre pour 2,50 mmd’épaisseur: l’UG 66, affichant seule-ment les heures et les minutes. La familledes calibres UG 66 évoluera tout au longdes années 1960 et jusque dans lesannées 1970, avec la création de deuxnouveaux Microtor, l’UG 71 et l’UG 72.

At the Basel trade fair in 1966, UniversalGenève presented a new range ofwatches equipped with the world’sthinnest self-winding Microtor move-ment measuring 28 mm in diameter anda mere 2.50 mm thick: UG 66, display-ing only the hours and minutes. Baselworld 2006. After over two years ofresearch and development, UniversalGenève presented a Microtor movement– Calibre UG 100 – featuring a resolutelynew conception. This “tribute” move-ment with automatic winding via anoff-centred micro-oscillating weight ischronometer-certified by the COSC.Since the parts are made accordingto extremely rigorous quality criteria,the movement has achieved consider-ably enhanced precision. The UG 100is the smallest Microtor (11 1/2 linesor 25,60 mm) endowed with similarfunctions that Universal Genève hasever produced.

Dérivée d’une petite seconde à 3h surles calibres précédents, la seconde estramenée au centre. De plus, un axespécifique permet d’atténuer les vibra-tions lors de l’avance de la grandeseconde, d’éviter l’utilisation de rouesintermédiaires et de réduire l’épaisseurdu mouvement. Le pont de balancierest muni de deux vis pour un réglage finet d’un système d’absorption des chocsempierré. Fonctionnant à la fréquencede 28’800 alternences/heure, le mouve-ment dispose d’une réserve de marchede 44 heures.

Derived from a small seconds displayat 3 o’clock on the previous movements,the seconds are brought back to the cen-tre. Moreover, a dedicated axis makes itpossible to diminish vibrations when thelarge seconds hand is moving forward,thereby avoiding the use of intermediatewheels and reducing the thickness ofthe movement. The balance-bridge isequipped with two screws enablingfine adjustment and with a jewelledshock-absorption system. Operating at afrequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour,the movement has a 44-hour powerreserve.

Deux années de recherche et de déve-loppement ont été nécessaires pourfabriquer ce nouveau calibre-hommageà remontage automatique par micro-masse excentrée, certifié COSC. Lescomposants étant fabriqués selon descritères de qualité très rigoureux, le mou-vement a gagné en précision et affichedésormais une seconde au centre.
