Academic Regalia

The bachelor’s degree graduates are wearing a “Wolfpack Red” cap and gown, a tradition that began in 2010.

The master’s and doctoral graduates are wearing the traditional black cap and gown and a colored hood. Of all the components of the academic costume, the hood is most symbolic. The hood’s coloring and size represent the level and subject of degree earned, as well as the institution from which it was awarded. The hood has colors on it in two different places. On one side of the hood there are patches of velvet, and on the other side there are large patches of silk. The silk patches are the colors of the institution that gave the degree. The velvet indicates the area of study.

Faculty typically wear the regalia of the institution from which they earned their highest degree.

The graduates wear a cap or “mortar board” with a tassel. The tassels for the PhD degree are gold, and those for other graduate and professional degrees may correspond to the trimmings on the hoods.

The stoles and cords represent a rich variety of honors and associations in which the graduates have participated during their time at North Carolina State University.

Undergraduate honors are designated by stoles in the following colors:

White * Cum Laude GPA of 3.250 through 3.499Silver ** Magna Cum Laude GPA of 3.500 through 3.749Gold *** Summa Cum Laude GPA of 3.750 and above

Student Commencement Speaker

Jordan Dawn Feeney Poole College of Management, Class of ‘19

Jordan is from Boxford, Massachusetts. She graduates today summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in economics, as well as a Bachelor of Science in business administration with a concentration in finance. In addition, she has completed the Global Perspectives Certificate and a Spanish minor.

Jordan has distinguished herself as an exceptional scholar and leader during her time at NC State and in the Poole College of Management. She is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society, a University Scholar and an economics honor student. She has served as a Study Abroad Orientation Leader, an International Student Mentor, treasurer for the International Business Club, president of the campus Relay for Life Committee and a member of the Women in Business Club and Finance Club.

Jordan also competed in the Deloitte FanTAXic competition and the Global Storytelling competition. During her time at NC State, Jordan studied abroad in both London and Italy and held internships with WilmerHale LLP and Holland & Hart LLP as well as a bookkeeping position with Charles River CFO.

Upon graduation, Jordan will remain in Raleigh as a corporate risk analyst for Credit Suisse with the ultimate goal of advancing further within the field of investment banking.

All graduates are considered candidates for graduation until final graduation clearance is completed on January 20, 2020. Diplomas will be mailed to graduates by the NC State Office of Registration and Records during the last week of January 2020.

In accordance with The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, the names of students with a full privacy block have been withheld from this publication.
