Les progrs accomplis rcemment dans les recherches mythologiques, grcesurtout aux travaux de Claude Lvi-Strauss, constituent un apport de matriauxet d'lments de rflexion considrable la thorie smantique qui se pose, on lesait, le problme gnral de la lisibilit des textes et cherche tablir un inventairede procdures de leur description.Or, il semble que la mthodologie de l'interprtation des mythes se situe, dufait de leur complexit, en dehors des limites qu'assignent la smantique, l'heure actuelle, les thories les plus en vue aux tats-Unis, celles notammentde J. J. Katz et J. A. Fodor.1. Loin de se limiter l'interprtation des noncs, la thorie smantique quichercherait rendre compte de la lecture des mythes, doit oprer avec dessquences d'noncs articules en rcits.2. Loin d'exclure toute rfrence au contexte, la description des mythes estamene utiliser les informations extra-textuelles sans lesquelles l'tablissementde l'isotopie narrative serait impossible.3. Le sujet parlant (= le lecteur), enfin, ne peut tre considr comme l'invariant de la communication mythique, car celle-ci transcende la catgorie deconscient vs inconscient. L'objet de la description se situe au niveau de la transmission, du texte-invariant, et non au niveau de la rception, du lecteur-variable.Nous sommes, par consquent, oblig de partir non d'une thorie smantiqueconstitue, mais d'un ensemble de faits dcrits et de concepts labors par lemythologue afin de voir :1 en quelle mesure les uns et les autres peuvent tre formuls en termesd'une smantique gnrale susceptible de rendre compte, entre autre, de l'interprtation mythologique;2 quelles exigences les conceptualisations des mythologues posent une tellethorie smantique.Nous avons choisi, pour ce faire, le mythe de rfrence bororo qui sert Lvi-Strauss, dans le Cru et le Cuit, de point de dpart la description de l'univers28

lments pour une thorie de V interprtation du rcit mythiquemythologique, saisi dans une de ses dimensions, celle de la culture alimentaire.Cependant, tandis que Lvi-Strauss s'tait propos l'inscription de ce mythe-occurence dans l'univers mythologique progressivement dgag, notre but serade partir du mythe de rfrence considr comme unit narrative, en essayantd'expliciter les procdures de description qu'il faut mettre en place pour aboutir,par tapes successives, la lisibilit maximale de ce mythe particulier. S'agissant,par consquent, d'une interprtation mthodologique bien plus que mythologique,otre travail consistera essentiellement dans le regroupement et l'exploitation des dcouvertes qui ne nous appartiennent pas.

II. LES COMPOSANTES STRUCTURALES DU MYTHEII.l. Les trois composantes.

Toute description du mythe doit tenir compte, selon Lvi-Strauss, de' troislments fondamentaux qui sont : 1 l'armature; 2 le code; 3 le message.Il s'agira donc pour nous de nous demander (1) comment interprter, dansle cadre d'une thorie smantique, ces trois composantes du mythe et (2) quelleplace attribuer, chacune d'elles, dans l'interprtation d'un rcit mythique.II.2. L'armature.

Il semble que par l'armature, qui est un lment invariant, il faut entendre lestatut structurel du mythe en tant que narration. Ce statut parat tre double :(1) on peut dire que l'ensemble des proprits structurelles communes tous lesmythes-rcits constitue un modle narratif (2) mais que ce modle doit rendrecompte la fois (a) du mythe considr comme unit discursive transphrastiqueet (b) de la structure du contenu qui est manifest au moyen de cette narration.1. L'unit discursive qu'est le rcit est considrer comme un algorithme,c'est--dire, comme une succession d'noncs dont les fonctions-prdicats simulent inguistiquement un ensemble de comportements ayant un but. En tantque succession, le rcit possde une dimension temporelle : les comportements quis'y trouvent tals entretiennent entre eux des relations d'antriorit et depostriorit.

Le rcit, pour avoir un sens, doit tre un tout de signification et se prsente,de ce fait, comme une structure smantique simple. Il en rsulte que les dveloppementsecondaires de la narration, ne trouvant pas leur place dans la structuresimple, constituent une couche structurelle subordonne : la narration, considrecomme un tout, aura donc pour contrepartie une structure hirarchique ducontenu.2. Une sous-classe de rcits (mythes, contes, pices de thtre, etc.) possdeune caractristique commune qui peut tre considre comme la propritstructurelle de cette sous-classe de rcits dramatiss: la dimension temporelle,sur laquelle ils se trouvent situs, est dichotomise en un avant vs un aprs.A cet avant vs aprs discursif correspond ce qu'on appelle un renversement dela situation qui, sur le plan de la structure implicite, n'est autre chose qu'une29
