EXPOSITION"L’histoire de Mr B" est un spectacle de marionnettes joué entre les pages d’un livre géant, et raconté par un champignon qui vous présentera M. Bumblegrum, personnage grognon mais attachant, qui fait un voyage coloré à travers les saisons. Avec tendresse, surprises et humour, la nature tente de le réconforter. Les arbres jouent, les fleurs dansent et le soleil chante. L’aiderez-vous à souffler sur les nuages pour dégager le ciel?… Deviendrez-vous son ami?…
La première représentation de ce spectacle a eu lieu à l’Office Franco Allemand pour la Jeunesse de Berlin (OFAJ), en octobre 2014. Depuis, il a fait de chemin en passant notamment par le Fringe Festival d’Edinburgh 2016, qui lui a valu un franc succès et une petite tournée Anglo-Allemande en 2017.

tous deux établis à Berlin, et du fait que nous avons eu la possibilité de nous produire en Angleterre, Ecosse, Allemagne, Suisse,… ce spectacle a la particularité de pouvoir être présenté dans 3 langues: Français, Allemand ou Anglais.

INTENTION ET ARGUMENTUn conte philosophique, s’adressant aussi bien aux enfants qu’aux adultes
Nous souhaitions raconter "une histoire qui fait du bien à l’âme" en nous donnant comme challenge de la créer de toutes pièces et de nous adresser à un public d’enfants aussi bien que d’adultes. En partant d’un simple jeu d’incitation à l’écriture où Pierre à proposé à Jess un titre et un objet (un vieux train à vapeur) à intégrer dans le récit, Jess a rédigé le texte qui constitue la trame de ce spectacle. Tous deux enthousiasmés par cette histoire poétique, tendre et que nous estimons pertinente de par les thèmes abordés, opposant l’amour au deuil, la colère à l’espoir et la tristesse à la joie, nous avons réécrit le texte sous forme de pièce pour marionnettes avec des dialogues. Mais comme son style original est celui d’un conte, il nous a paru justifié de créer un décor représentant un livre et dont les scènes se déroulent entre les pages. Pour en faciliter la narration, le personnage de Bobby le champignon, narrateur de l’histoire a été inventé et incarné au moyen du jeu d’acteur. Il apparaît à différents moments du récit et raconte directement l’histoire au public en leur posant tour à tour des questions afin de dynamiser la narration et de la rendre plus interactive.
Notre spectacle a un certain aspect artisanal "fait main". Nous avons pris un grand plaisir en variant le plus possible les rythmes, le jeu et l’aspect visuel de chaque scène et moments de l’histoire qui se déroule à travers les 4 saisons afin de rendre son récit captivant et surprenant, tout en respectant évidemment un style et une esthétique homogène. Le décor est truffé de petites trappes, portes et rainures d’où apparaissent les protagonistes et éléments de l’histoires. De grands paravents masques des éléments plus volumineux ou un comédien. Nous nous servons par exemple de la musique, du théâtre d’ombre, du jeu d’acteur, du théâtre d’objets, d’un grand parapluie décoré qui devient un soleil, de confettis pour une tempête de neige, de bâtonnets d’encens dans la cheminée du train à vapeur aux couleurs du Transsibérien…
Pour ce projet, nous avons mis en commun et tiré profit de toutes nos qualités d’acteurs, marionnettistes, peintres, musiciens, écrivains, scénographes, menuisiers-électriciens en herbe, bricoleurs… parfois même magiciens !

SYNOPSISEté - Mr. B travaille dans un train, comme barman dans le wagon-restaurant. Il est courtois et très apprécié par son entourage. Un jour, il rencontre Lucy, une chanteuse, de passage dans la région pour un concert. Aussitôt qu’elle monte dans le train et commande un thé au citron, c’est le coup de foudre… Une scène de théâtre d’ombre présente en quelques tableaux, les épisodes romantiques vécus par les deux protagonistes, jusqu’à ce que Lucy périsse accidentellement, lors d’une ballade dans la campagne. C’est le drame pour M. Bumblegrum. Une phase de deuil commence.
Automne - Il devient de plus en plus grincheux et s’isole dans la forêt, loin de la société. Son nouvel emploi consiste à compter les arbres. Ici, des oiseaux rieurs, des champignons bavards, des arbres danseurs et un grand soleil taquin, tentent de l’amuser, pour lui redonner le sourire, mais en vain. Mr. B veut être seul, tant et si bien que tout finit par disparaître autour de lui.
Hiver - Ce qui était autrefois une forêt, ressemble maintenant à un désert où ne s’élève plus qu’un arbre. La neige recouvre le paysage et puis, c’est la tempête. La neige à tout engloutit ainsi que la petite maison de Mr. B. A ce moment, il à vraiment peur. Au coeur de cette tempête, conscient de sa solitude et de sa tristesse, il regrette sincèrement d’avoir tout repoussé autour de lui et exprime le veux de retrouver des amis. Cette émotion puissante fait fondre la glace qui enserre son coeur.
Printemps - La tempête se calme. En faisant appel à l’aide du public, il souffle sur les nuages pour les chasser, sur la neige pour la faire fondre et avec son petit arrosoir, entretient sa propriété pour refaire pousser les fleurs et les arbres disparus. Le soleil revient et constate avec lui qu’après la pluie vient le beau temps.

ÉLÉMENTS DU SPECTACLE• Les marionnettes sont nommées dans le jargon
« marionnettes sac », mais elles ne manquent pas de charme! Elles sont constituées d’un petit sac rempli de sable, pourvues d’une boule pour la tête et une tige qui sert à les manipuler depuis dessus. Certaines d’entre elles ont des fils qui commandent l’articulation des bras. Elles sont de petite taille (env. 25-30 cm de haut).
• Le théâtre d’ombres. Afin de varier le procédé de narration, et de démontrer d’une façon poétique la romance et l’amour naissant entre 2 protagonistes, trois scènes sans paroles et accompagnée de musique sont jouée en théâtre d’ombre sur des écrans miniature dissimulés dans le décor.
• Le narrateur guide le public à travers l’histoire. Son nom est Bobby et
c’est un champignon, incarné au moyen du jeu d’acteur par Pierre. Il intervient tout au long de l’histoire et interagit directement avec les marionnettes et le public, leur posant des questions et contribuant à l’action du spectacle.
• La musique est entièrement composée, enregistrée ou jouée en live par nous-même, pour les besoins de ce spectacle. Nous nous servons d’un ukulele et de quelques instruments numériques et effets-spéciaux réalisés au moyen d’un programme informatique.
• Le décor que nous avons entièrement fabriqué à l’aide de bois, carton et beaucoup d’imagination,
représente un grand livre posé à la verticale. Au début du spectacle le livre est présenté fermé. Puis on ouvre le livre. Les différentes pages illustrées constituent les fonds de scènes devant lesquelles les marionnettes évoluent. Le livre est construit à la manière d’un livre animé ou à système (pop up book) c’est à dire que les principaux éléments du décor peuvent se déplier et ressortir des pages pour former une table, une maison, un arbre,… Le tout est posé sur une structure de 180x65 cm et haute de 60 cm. Le plateau es perforé, pourvu de rainures et de trappes d’où peuvent surgir (pousser) des arbres, fleurs…

We require the following materials: • Electrical outlet 220V. • Masking / draping fabric (preferably in black) for the background of the set. • 4 chairs for our props.• Possibility for black out, for the shadow puppet scene Depending on the location: • For over 40 people in audience: Podium stage approx. 50 to 80 cm high / or tiered seating.• 1 spotlight 250W or 500W with shutters, amber gel and possibility to be turned off from the stage.

Créer et partager un travail artistique unique fait à la main et avec le cœur
Shake Shake Theatre est le nom du duo formé en 2014 par Jessica Nicholls (Australie) et Pierre Filliez (Suisse) ils
résident à Berlin. Shake Shake Theatre produit des pièces pour marionnettes ou de théâtre utilisant des masques et propose occasionnellement des stages / workshops. Ils créent l’intégralité de leur spectacles: concept, script, accessoires, décor, marionnettes, masques, musique…
Leur première production commune était un spectacle de rue de commedia dell’arte "Du bist mein Sonnenschein" présenté au Château de Merode en 2014, puis "Igor’s Travel" lors d’une visite dans une école supérieure en Australie (NSW) suivie par "The Story of Mr B" pièce pour marionnette traduite en 3 langues (FR-DE-ENG) qui a eu beaucoup de succès au Festival Fringe 2016 d’Edinburgh. Leur dernier spectacle en date est "L’Oiseau-Lyre" pièce pour marionnettes, masques et ombres, inspirée par les textes de Jacques Prévert et commandé par le Musée de Bagnes, le Châble (Suisse), présentée dans le même lieu, en mai 2017.
Ensemble ils travaillent également comme marionnettistes pour la compagnie Drehbühne Berlin depuis 2015 - Mis en scène par Lorenz Christian Köhler, leurs productions sont "Der Kleine Prinz", Admiralspalast, Berlin et Capitol Theatre Düsseldorf , "Das Dschungelbuch", Botanischer Garten, Berlin.

Jessica Nicholls est une comédienne et marionnettiste australienne. Elle est diplômée de Charles Sturt University, Bathurst , Australie (Bachelor of Arts in Theatre/Media), ainsi que de l’École Internationale de Théâtre Atonio Fava, en Italie, où elle a appris la commedia dell’arte, jeu et fabrication de masques traditionnels en cuir. Elle a tourné en solo ou en compagnie (Vision Mechanics), différents spectacles de marionnettes en Australie, Irlande et Grande Bretagne. Elle a travaillé en 2012-13 en tant que Team Leader auprès des communicateurs scientifiques au Festival de Science de Abu Dhabi. En
2013, à Berlin, elle a crée « Chookas Theater », mini théâtre d’ombre, s’adressant à un spectateur à la fois.

Pierre Filliez comédien diplômé de l’École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, Paris 2008-2010. Actif sur les scènes suisses et européennes, il s’est produit seul ou en
compagnie dans des pièces de théâtre, comédies musicales, spectacles de marionnettes, en tant que récitant, ou lors de de lectures. Il
développe ses propres spectacles et enseigne. Il sculpte le bois, travaille le cuir, le papier mâché pour créer masques et marionnettes. Il est également
peintre autodidacte dans un style représentatif entre l'expressionnisme et le surréalisme. Il est né en 1978, originaire de Suisse (Valais), actuellement il vit à

The Story of Mr B A tiny tale, told with love in a giant pop-up book

Brave, tragic, compassionate and hilarious by turns, Shake Shake Theatre’s The Story of Mr B lifts its audience into its heart and holds them there. With great humour and a real sense of how the minds of youngsters over about three-years-old work (while making sure any younger siblings won’t be bored), it tells of life, love, forgiveness and regret.
Mr B is Mr Bumblegrum, a wonderfully dumpy puppet of an old man who lives alone, deep in the forest. Not even the mushrooms are his friends and he spurns the birds’ beauty. His job is to count the trees, and that is what he does. But where did he come from? And how did the once- friendly waiter in the restaurant car of a local train arrive in this lonely place?
If grown-ups will admire the daring with which The Story of Mr B addresses the big issues in life – just as any great theatre should, whatever age it is aimed at – everyone will be fascinated by the intricate, cleverly constructed book through which the story is told.
Open it up and it becomes a forest where Bumblegrum’s house pops-up, out of the page. Turn a page and a tiny train puffs over distant mountains then out onto the stage, big enough for young Mr B to climb aboard. Windows open to reveal his adventures told in crisp, precisely illuminated shadow puppets. Above, a giant parasol sun twirls in anticipation, singing to Mr B in a vain at-tempt to cheer him up.
It is the telling, though, which is so engaging. Puppeteers Jessica Nicholls and Pierre Filliez have a natural rapport which makes the theatre itself an easy place to be as their audience arrive – before they gently take them into their world and reveal the many splendid things which happen there.

This is an enchanting, beautifully crafted piece of theatre by people who understand children and know how to engage them completely in the world that has been created.
The story of Mr B is contained within a huge, velvet covered book in the middle of the stage. The book is opened and the pages within become the backdtop to the story. We begin by finding Mr B, a dumpy, grumpy old puppet all by himself in the middle of a forest counting trees. How did he come to be like this? To find out we go back to the start of the story where he’s happy and friendly, working in the bar on a local train. One day he falls in love with one of the passengers,the beautiful singer Lucy, but after an all too brief romance she is killed in a thunderstorm by a falling tree. Mr B, sad and angry retreats from the world and, at the point we first saw him, is bitter, angry and alone. Things get worse for Mr B as the trees and the sun leave when they are shunned by him and he ends up in a barren winter land. At this point he realises that this is not what he wants and he starts to make things better – brnging back flowers and then trees and making friends with the sun. We all blow him a kiss and wish him well on his way.
The story, and the big issues it contains of love, tragedy and regret, is told with humour and charm by the two skilled puppeteers who invest the puppets with real character and life. The book in which the story is set is exquisite. At one point it opens up and is transformed into an alpine sceme where a tiny train comes over the hills and then a full (puppet) size one, complete with a tin can engine and real smoke comes through the tunnel that has opened out from the page. At another point doors are open and we see a beautifully rendered shadow play of the romance. The elements of the story telling are cleverly combined and the audience was utterly rapt for the whole 40 minutes.
Both children and the adults lucky enough to accompany them will be enchanted. Do try to see this.

Mr Bumblegrum is very grumpy, in fact he’s never happy, ever. And so, to help us understand why, two cheeky toadstools bounce on to the puppet stage to introduce The tory of r . n this tale for children about finding happiness, Australian Jessica Nicholls and Swiss Pierre Filliez strike an enchanting balance between funny and sad, told through a huge book that opens up to become Mr B’s universe.
eopled by expressive sandbag puppets, moving forests and fluttering butterflies, the pages open to reveal r s house, an alpine railway station, a winter forest or a little window through which we see a shadow play candlelit dinner. We see how Mr B fell in love, travelled, had adven-tures and how tragedy befell him. But being reminded of all the wonderful people he met and places he visited doesn’t make him feel any better, so all the animals and trees in the forest where he lives join together to show him how to be happy.
The innocently simple delivery addresses big themes boldly but sensitively, filtered through a fairytale narrative. The result is an endearingly thought-ful show from Shake Shake Theatre where both puppets and performers connect magically with the audience.
Endearing puppet show addresses big themes to connect magically with its audience.

At the mid-point of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, with more than 150 shows under its collective reviewing belt, we asked our critics to name just the two best shows they’ve seen at this year’s event. Here’s what they chose...

THE HURLY burly of the Fringe doesn’t always feel a welcoming habitat for very young children, nonetheless there are wee gems for early years theatre-goers. Chiffonade is one of them. Choreo-graphed by Michele Dhallu and performed by Suzel Barbaroux for Carré Blanc Cie, it’s like a living picture book for tinies (aged 1 and over).
A ginormous squishy ball of many colours sits alone on the stage. It’s actually the patchwork house of a mercurial sprite who gives the sphere lively legs, turns it into a snail-shell home, and finally wriggles out of it into the Big World. That’s when the material mag-ic begins: the ball harbours a rainbow whisk of differently textured fabrics which Barbaroux fashions into clever surprises – even a tropical beach is twisted into shape under her fingers. Uh oh! why is the cloth getting wet? The final texture turns out to be water, with Barbaroux dancing and splashing like a free spirit.
Even if the very young don’t quite twig that it’s an adventure in growing up, from safe cocoon to (merrily aqua-planing) adulthood, the captivating visuals are a joy for all ages.

Fringe Children’s Theatre reviews: The Story of Mr B.
MR B – short for Bumblegrum – has no friends. Doesn’t want any. Go away... But Shake Shake Theatre’s puppeteers, Jessica Nicholls and Pierre Filliez, know that his lonely story has a happy ending, one that audiences (aged 3+) should see for themselves.
It’s all inside a very big book, the pages not just colourfully illustrat-ed but enriched with pop-up additions or little windows that reveal cameos of shadow-play. Time was, Mr B was young and in love with a singer. He met her in the restaurant car of a train. And there it is, tiny and distant at first but then - puffing smoke – arriving on-stage, big enough for them to climb on board. When a lightning flash fells a tree, fatally crushing Mr B’s sweetheart in full view of everyone, he becomes the snarly, solitary grouch we encounter at the start. The loss of future happiness, the corrosive effects of profound grief – adults, and many works for little ones, would shy away from these dark and doom-laden topics.
But the unfailing joy of this production lies in seeing Mr B realise, from within his own heart, that he has to emerge from such futile misery. Whereupon the snow-shrouded book bursts into a spring-time of sprouting flowers, leafy trees and sunny beams. The miniaturised details are so entrancing, I’m not sure if the kisses we blew at the end were for Mr B – or for the puppeteers.

ShakeShakeTheatre present the tale of a man named Bumblegrum in a quirky and enjoyable puppet show for children.
The story explores the question of just why Mr Bumblegrum is so grumpy all of the time, delving into his surprisingly tragic past and then looking at the consequences of his subsequent decision to reject all forms of friendship. Although Mr Bumblegrum prompts a lot of laughs and giggles with his grumbly mumblings and amusing squishy movement, the show does touch on darker territory from time-to-time. In many ways, the best children’s theatre often does and the show manages to prompt a few insightful conversations between parent and child about what’s just happened. The two halves of the story aren’t quite as seamless as they could be, with several aspects introduced in the first half seemingly forgotten about in the second, but it’s still good fun.
The design is gorgeous. The storybook genuinely feels magical, with wonderfully painted backdrops and a pop-up element straight out of a dream. Flowers grow from the grass lining the front of the stage before your very eyes to maintain a sense of wonder. The puppets too are lots of fun, foregoing legs in favour of squishy bottoms which make for a very amusing movement style which is portrayed with perfect puppeteering and timing.
The two performers, Pierre Filliez and Jessica Nicholls, explore different styles of storytelling, putting a bit of shadow-puppetry into the regular puppetry mix, as well as full-blown costumed acting. The costumed acting by Filliez forms the narration section of the play, which has its up and downs. Although most of the meaning is evident, some of the English is a bit jumbled or mispronounced, which could prove a problem for children not yet entirely fluent in English them-selves. Yet Filliez and Nicholls are entertaining till the last; in par-ticular, Nicholls’ wide range of amusing squeaky noises never gets old as far as the children’s giggles can attest to.The Sun himself attests in the show that “Sun will always follow rain” and this indeed proves to be the case as The Story of Mr B will bright-en up any rainy Edinburgh afternoon. Highly recommended to parents with children aged four and above.
