Chaque année, les festivaliers demandent “Quel est donc votre secret ? Comment gardez-vous les choses fraîches et créatives année après année ?”

Et la réponse est vraiment très simple : nous nous concentrons exclusivement sur le progrès-! En fait, c’est cette même méthode de réflexion prospective qui m’a permis de démarrer le Festival il y a 32 ans avec mon ami Charles Magras. Nous nous sommes demandé “Que pouvons-nous faire culturellement l’année prochaine, qui serait très spécial pour Saint-Barth-? La première année nous avons donc fait quelque chose d’innovant : nous avons apporté la musique classique professionnelle sur notre petite île bien-aimée au milieu de la mer des Caraïbes ! Et depuis, chaque année, notre festival continue d’innover, de progresser, et toujours avec la plus haute qualité possible.

Avec l’aide annuelle de généreux donateurs comme vous, qui contribuez aux revenus indispensables sur lesquels ce Festival repose, nous pouvons bâtir notre fondation de la musique classique. Nous avons prévu de la musique classique de renommée mondiale ainsi que de l’opéra et du jazz et de la danse et des programmes éducatifs et de sensibilisation des seniors et... La liste s’allonge encore et encore ! Ainsi, lorsque vous me saluez lors d’un concert, votre don en main et que vous vous demandez ce que je pense, maintenant vous savez-! Nous sommes impatients de jouer, d’échanger culturellement, de démarrer les programmes éducatifs qui sont stimulants, engageants et excitants autant pour nos artistes que pour les spectateurs... et les progrès futurs à venir !

Every year, supporters ask “So what IS your secret? How DO you keep things fresh and creative year after year?”

And the answers are really very simple: we concentrate exclusively on progress! In fact, that method of forward thinking is exactly how the Festival got started over 32 years ago when I began this work with my friend Charles Magras. We asked one another “What can we do next year, culturally, that will be very special for St. Barth?” And so in the first year we did something brand new: we brought professional classical music to our beloved little island in the middle of the Caribbean Sea! And every year since then our Festival has added new aspects that are innovative, progressive, and always of the highest quality possible.

With the annual help of generous sponsors like you, who contribute the much-needed monies that this Festival relies upon, we can build our classical music foundation. We have included world-class classical music and opera and jazz and dance and childrens’ educational programs and senior outreach and... The list of progress goes on and on! So when you greet me at a concert with your donation in hand and you’re wondering what I’m thinking, now you know! I’m thinking that we’re looking forward to performances, cultural exchange and educational programs that are stimulating, engaging and exciting for our performers and generous audience members alike... and the future progress to come!

FESTIVAL DE MUSIQUE 2016

Depuis 1985, le Festival de musique scande la vie de notre île et s’inscrit presque naturellement dans notre paysage artistique et culturel. Cette évidence ferait presque oublier que cet événement existe grâce à la passion, au travail et à l’exigence de ses organisateurs. La programmation proposée sera encore une fois de grande qualité, tant par le choix des œuvres que des interprètes.

Le Festival de musique est une de ces pierres fondatrices sur lesquelles s’édifie patiemment une vie culturelle et artistique riche à Saint Barthélemy.Chaque année, l’offre s’enrichit, se diversifie et se complète. Cinéma, littérature, musique, danse, théâtre, peinture, sculpture : tous les arts ou presque ont désormais leur place, soit à l’occasion d’événements culturels, soit au travers de nombreuses associations, de galeristes ou de mécènes. Ces initiatives formidables se complètent et résonnent entre elles. La programmation du Carnaval des animaux de Camille Saint-Saëns pour cette 32ème édition du Festival fait écho aux sculptures de l’artiste Bjorn Okholm Skaarup exposées sur le parvis de l’Hôtel de la Collectivité depuis novembre 2014. De ce foisonnement naît le dialogue des œuvres. Je suis certain que l’année 2016 ouverte en beauté par le Festival de musique poursuivra cette dynamique vertueuse.

ST BARTS MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016

Since 1985, the Music Festival has been a key feature of our island life and has become almost a natural part of our artistic and cultural landscape. We could thus almost forget that this event exists thanks to the passion, hard work and diligence of its organizers. The program is once again of high quality, in terms of both the repertoire and the artists.

The Music Festival is one of the foundation stones upon which the rich cultural and artistic life of St Barts has been progressively built.Each year, the repertoire of island events is enriched, diversified and enhanced. Films, literature, music, dance, theater, fine art and sculpture - practically all the arts can now be found, through cultural festivals or numerous associations, galleries or patrons. These amazing initiatives complement and resonate with one another. For example, as part of this 32nd annual Festival, ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ by Camille Saint-Saëns echoes the sculptures of the artist Bjorn Okholm Skaarup, which have been exhibited in front of the Hôtel de la Collectivité since November 2014. From this wealth of ingenuity emerges a harmonious dialogue of creativity. I am confident that 2016, with its grand opening by the Music Festival, will see the continuation of this exemplary dynamic.

“Unforgettable”, a reçu 7 Grammy Awards. Monty a

joué “Rhapsody in Blue” de George Gershwin sous

la direction de Bobby McFerrin au Festival Verbier en

Suisse, il a enregistré la plage sonore du film à succès de Clint Eastwood “Bird”, un film qui relate la vie du géant du jazz Charlie Parker. Il a accompli plusieurs des

tournées musicales à travers le monde avec son Trio

pendant quarante ans. Alexander a un programme très chargé : il joue dans des clubs, des salles de concert,

ainsi que dans des festivals internationaux de jazz.

Monty Alexander’s collaborations span multiple

genres, styles, and generations. His projects have

been as varied as assisting Natalie Cole in her tribute

album to her father, Nat “King” Cole, in 1991 - the

resulting album, “Unforgettable”, won 7 Grammy

awards. Monty has performed George Gershwin’s

“Rhapsody in Blue” under the direction of Bobby

McFerrin at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and

he recorded the piano track for the film score of Clint Eastwood’s “Bird”, a movie about the life of jazz titan

Charlie Parker. He has been touring worldwide with

his Trio for over four decades. Alexander maintains

a rigorous touring schedule playing in jazz clubs,

concert halls, as well as at international jazz festivals.

In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere

Carson Becke has performed in Canada, England, Scotland, Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, Poland, Latvia, and Trinidad and Tobago. He has performed in the Verbier Festival, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. For the past five years he has been artist in residence and then

Originaire de St Barth, Guillaume étudie aux Etats-Unis et arrive à Paris en 2002. Attiré par le cinéma depuis son plus jeune âge, il suit alors plusieurs formations théâtrales (Bob McAndrew, Patricia Sterlin,...). On peut le voir dans des courts métrages, des téléfilms ainsi que des pièces de théâtre en France et en Angleterre telles que Ne m’envoyez pas de fleurs de Norman Barasch et Carroll Moore, Incendies et Littoral de Wajdi Mouawad, Les Parents terribles de Cocteau, the Zoo Story d’Edward Albee.

Born on St Barth, Guillaume studied in the United States and arrived in Paris in 2002. Attracted by the cinema at a young age, he does several theatrical trainings and coachings in front of the camera (Bob

McAndrew, Patricia Sterlin,...). We can see him in short movies, television films as well as plays in France & in England such as Send me no Flowers from Norman Barasch & Carroll Moore, Incendies & Littoral from Wajdi Mouawad Les Parents Terribles from Cocteau, The Zoo Story from Edward Albee.

Robertbrophy Alto T Viola

On peut voir et entendre Robert Brophy à l’Opéra et au Philharmonique de Los Angeles ainsi que dans plusieurs orchestres de musique de chambre de la Côte Ouest. Robert Brophy joue avec Nigel Kennedy dans un quartet pour la nouvelle version des meilleurs titres de Kennedy sous le label EMI et a joué aux côtés de Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Michel Dalberto et Dimitri Sitkovetsky. Il a remporté l’audition de violon Alto avec le Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra en décembre 2011. Avocat de la nouvelle musique et ancien membre du Enzō Quartet, Robert Brophy a travaillé avec plusieurs grands compositeurs du 20ème et du 21ème siècle y compris Joan Tower, William Bolcom, Tan Dun et Bernard Rands. A Los Angeles, Robert Brophy continue sa vie de musicien de quartet en tant que membre du New Hollywood String Quartet, se produisant avec eux dans le

Southland depuis ces six dernières années.

Robert Brophy can be seen and heard playing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and Opera and many Californian chamber music series. He is featured with Nigel Kennedy in a quartet for Kennedy’s new release Greatest Hits on the EMI label and has performed alongside Martha Argerich, Mischa Maisky, Michel Dalberto and Dmitri Sitkovetsky. He won the viola audition with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra in December 2011. An advocate for new music and former member of the Ensō Quartet, Robert has worked with many leading composers of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Joan Tower, William Bolcom, Tan Dun and Bernard Rands. In Los Angeles, Robert continues his quartet life as a member of the New Hollywood String Quartet, performing with them throughout the Southland for the last six years.

Timothycobb Contrebasse T Double Bass

Tim a commencé à jouer de la contrebasse à sept ans et en a fait son métier vers treize ans. Il a intégré l’Institut Curtis de Musique et a rejoint le Symphonique de Chicago au cours de son année senior. Il est devenu membre de l’Orchestre du Metropolitan Opera en 1986 en tant que contrebassiste principal jusqu’en 2013. Il est actuellement Contrebassiste Principal au Philarmonique de New York. Il enseigne à l’Ecole de Musique de Manhattan et préside la section Contrebasse de l’Ecole Julliard. Tim participe chaque année au Festival de Musique de Sarasota et a donné une master class et un récital à l’Université des Arts de Tokyo.

Tim began playing the double bass at age seven and was playing professionally by thirteen. He attended the Curtis Institute of Music and during his senior year joined the Chicago Symphony. He became a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in 1986 and was principal double bassist there through 2013. Currently, he is principal double Bassist with the New York Philarmonic. He teaches at the Manhattan School of Music, and is Chairman of the double bass department at the Juilliard School. Each year Tim joins the Sarasota Music Festival to play as well as coach, and gave a master class and recital at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Robertacooper Violoncelle T Cello

Roberta Cooper a gagné la compétition Internationale des Artistes dont l’organisme a financé ses débuts au Carnegie Hall. Elle est membre du Walsh-Drucker-Cooper Trio qui se produit de façon soutenue dans des séries majeures à Washington D.C, à la Nouvelle-Orléans et à New York; trio parti depuis peu à la conquête de l’Europe. Mme Cooper est la violoncelliste assistante principale de l’American Symphony Orchestra, de l’American Composers Orchestra et du Westchester Philharmonic. On a pu la voir dans les Philharmonics de Berlin et Brooklyn, le New York City Opera et les orchestres du NYC Ballet et de l’ABT. Durant de nombreuses années, avec le claveciniste Kenneth Cooper, Mme Cooper a joué au sein du Berkshire Bach Society. Elle a également été l’invitée de l’Emerson Quartet.

Roberta Cooper won the Artists International Competition which sponsored her Carnegie Hall debut. She is a member of the Walsh-Drucker-Cooper Trio, which performs extensively in Washington, D.C., New Orleans and New York City and most recently Europe. Ms Cooper is the assistant principal cellist of the American Symphony Orchestra, the American Composers Orchestra and the Westchester Philharmonic. She has performed with the Berlin and Brooklyn Philharmonics, the New York City Opera and the ballet orchestras of NYC and ABT. Ms. Cooper has performed alongside harpsichordist Kenneth Cooper and the Berkshire Bach Society for many years. She has also been a guest with the Emerson Quartet.

Depuis 1970, Frances a établi sa résidence secondaire à St Barth. Elle est présidente et cofondatrice du Festival de Musique de Saint Barthélemy. Anciennement présidente de l’Association Symphonique de Pittsburgh, elle préside aujourd’hui la Société de Musique de Chambre de cette ville. Elle a été pendant longtemps très active au sein du Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. Elle a été en charge avec Morton Gold de composer deux oeuvres destinées au Jeune Public (“The Jogger and the Dinosaur” et “Hosedown”) qui ont été jouées de nombreuses fois au niveau international. Elle a fait partie du Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra et en 2011 elle a reçu la Médaille française de Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres.

Since 1970 Frances has lived part time on St-Barth. She co-founded and is president of the Saint Barth Music Festival. She is honorary president of the Pittsburgh Chamber Music Society and former president of the Pittsburgh Symphony Association. For many years she has been an active board member of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. With Morton Gould she commissioned two compositions for his program called Young Audiences (“The Jogger and the Dinosaur” and “Hosedown”), which have had many international performances. Passionné par l’enseignement, Francis Gouton est professeur au Conservatoire de Trossingen, en Allemagne et enseigne partout dans le monde.

French cellist Francis Gouton has given concerts as a soloist and chamber musician in most of the major concert halls and festivals on all continents. As a soloist he performs with the Stuttgart State Orchestra, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. He performs the 6 Bach Suites as well a contemporary music, made several radio and CD recordings of unknown masterworks of the French repertoire. For many years he has explored the world of Bach in close cooperation with Helmuth Rilling and as a solo cellist of the Stuttgart Bach Collegium. He travelled to Haiti in January 2011 to teach in a school in Port-au-Prince. Francis is professor at the Trossingen music conservatory (Germany) and teaches world-wide.

Mr. Ha’roz is a frequent clinician at trombone conferences world-wide and has given master classes and recitals in Israel, the USA, Europe and Asia. His recording “Towards The Light” was released in 2004. Mr. Ha’roz serves on the faculty at the Curtis Institute of Music and the Temple University in Philadelphia. And in 2015 he returns as Principal Trombone in the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Alex a commencé ses études de Musique dans son Brésil natal à 9 ans et ses débuts de soliste en orchestre l’année suivante. Il a fait ses débuts de Chef d’Orchestre à 14 ans et à 16 ans il était Chef d’Orchestre Adjoint de la Chorale Pro Musica de Curitiba. Hautbois principal du Symphonique de Chicago de 1995 à 2004, son enregistrement du Concerto pour Hautbois de Strauss avec Daniel Barenboim a remporté en 2002 le Grammy Award du meilleur soliste avec orchestre. Il est diplômé du Conservatoire Oberlin où il est professeur de hautbois. Il a été nommé récemment Directeur Artistique de l’Opéra de San Paulo et Chef d’Orchestre du Symphonique de San Paulo. Il est actuellement Directeur Artistique du Festival de Musique de Santa Catarina et Directeur Général du PRIMA (un programme du “el system” pour l’intégration sociale par des orchestres de jeunes au Brésil.)

Alex began his musical studies in his native Brazil at age nine and made his solo orchestral debut the following year. He made his conducting debut at fourteen, and at sixteen was Assistant Conductor of the Pro Musica Choir of Curitiba. Principal Oboe for the Chicago Symphony from 1995 to 2004, his recording of the Strauss Oboe Concerto won the 2002 Grammy Award for best instrumental soloist with orchestra. He graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory and has been Artistic and Programming Director for the Sao Paulo Opera and chief conductor of the Sao Paulo Symphony since 2009. He is currently Aritistic Director of the Santa Catarina Music Festival and the General Director of PRIMA (an “el system”-based program of social inclusion through youth orchestra in Brasil.)

Robert Langevin occupe le poste de Flûtiste Principal au Philarmonique de New York. En mai 2001, il réalisa son premier solo avec orchestre lors de la première en Amérique du Nord du Siegfried Matthus’s Concerto pour Flûte et Harpe avec pour Harpiste Philharmonique Principale Nancy Allen et en Directeur de Musique Kurt Masur. Sa performance en Solo d’octobre 2012 dans le Nielsen’s Flute Concerto a été enregistrée afin de faire partie du Nielsen Project, traversée orchestrale multi-saisons des symphonies et concertos de tous les compositeurs Danois. Bien avant le Philharmonic, M. Langevin a occupé la fonction de Flûte Principale du Pittsburgh Symphony, et fut le partenaire privilégié de l’Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal durant 13 longues années, tout en participant à plus de 30 enregistrements.

Robert Langevin is the Principal Flute of the New York Philharmonic. In May 2001, he made his solo debut with them in the North American premiere of Siegfried Matthus’s Concerto for Flute and Harp with Philharmonic Principal Harp, Nancy Allen and Music Director Kurt Masur. His October 2012 solo performance in Nielsen’s Flute Concerto was recorded for inclusion in The Nielsen Project, the Orchestra’s multi-season traversal of all of the Danish composer’s symphonies and concertos. Prior to the Philharmonic, Mr. Langevin held the Principal Flute Chair of the Pittsburgh Symphony. Mr. Langevin served as associate principal of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra for 13 years, playing on more than 30 recordings.

Musicienne de chambre prolixe, Tessa Lark s’est produite dans plusieurs festivals d’été comme le Steans Institute à Ravinia, le Yellow Barn et le Music@Menlo. Originaire de Kentucky, Tessa a eu aussi beaucoup de plaisir à jouer du Bluegrass ainsi que la musique des Appalaches en récital. Mme Lark a également obtenu son Master en 2012 au Conservatoire de la Nouvelle-Angleterre sous la tutelle de Miriam Fried et de Lucy Chapman.

Le Lutosławski Quartet a reçu le nom du grand compositeur polonais Lutosławski. Il est devenu un des Quartets les plus en vue de Pologne. Il a acquis sa renommée dans des festivals mondiaux. Named after the great 20th century Polish composer Witold Lutosławski, the Lutosławski Quartet is one of the leading polish quartets. The quartet has appeared in leading world Festivals. The ensemble has cooperated with IRCAM – Centre Pompidou in Paris. Lutosławski Quartet has enjoyed collaborations with Garrick Ohlsson, Kevin Kenner and many other artists. Jeffrey Lyman has been on the faculty of the University of Michigan since 2006, and has earned a reputation as both an eminent performer and historian of the bassoon and its repertoire. Recent activities include his membership in the Rushes Ensemble, which in the fall of 2012 recorded and gave the premier performances of a groundbreaking 50-minute work for 7 bassoons by New York composer Michael Gordon. Also in 2012 he launched a publishing venture with TrevCo Music, and so far has issued 9 editions of works for bassoon by the great French, Italian and German bassoon pedagogues of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the summer of 2013, he and his colleagues Nancy Ambrose King and Martin Katz recorded five classic duos and trios for oboe, bassoon and piano, including works by Jolivet, Villa-Lobos, Poulenc, Grandval and Planel.

Née au Chili, Josefina a eu son diplôme de musique à l’Université d’Indiana et a joué avec l’Indiana Chamber Orchestra. Elle a reçu le premier prix de l’International Chamber Music d’Osaka et du concours Pasadena. Elle a rejoint le Chamber Orchestra de Los Angeles en 1999 comme Principal Deuxième Violon et se produit désormais en soliste avec cet orchestre. Elle a participé à de nombreux Festivals : Aspen, Tanglewood, Santa Fe, Schleswig-Holstein et Villa Musica en Allemagne. Elle a fait des tournées en Europe et en Asie avec l’Ensemble de Jazz Uri Caine.

Originally from Chile, Josefina earned her music degree at Indiana University and performed with the Indiana Chamber Orchestra. She was a prize-winner in the Osaka International Chamber Music and Pasadena Instrumental Competitions. Chrystal Williams a commencé sa carrière de chanteuse dans un grand nombre de compagnies d’Opéra y compris l’Opéra de Philadelphie, l’Opéra de Birmingham, l’Opéra de Knowville, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Norrkoping de Suède et le Festival Glimmerglass. Il est retourné au Wigmore Hall et au Sage Gateshead et a également joué avec le Posnan Philharmonic Orchestra. Il est Directeur Artistique du groupe Small Nations, Big Sounds. Comme soliste Bartosz a joué avec le Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, le Bristol Ensemble et beaucoup d’autres. Il a été auparavant Premier Violon du Philharmonique d’Oklaoma et a joué avec le Symphonique de Boston à Tanglewood. Chris a joué avec un large pannel d’artistes tels que Nancy Wilson, Joshua Bell et le Muir String Quartet. Il est membre fondateur du groupe innovant de musique de chambre Innuendo. Il est actuellement résident aux Facultés de Duquesne et de Carnegie Mellon. Son violon a été fabriqué en 1727 par Nicolo Gagliano.

A graduate of the Eastman School of Music, Chris joined the first violin section of the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1988. He previously served as concertmaster of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and has performed with the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood. Chris has played with a wide range of artists including Nancy Wilson, Joshua Bell, and the Muir String Quartet. He is a founding member of the innovative chamber group Innuendo. He is currently on the faculties of Duquesne and Carnegie Mellon Universities. Chris’s violin was made in 1727 by Nicolo Gagliano.

Elle est aussi la première musicienne de chambre à être décorée du Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Violinist Sandy Yamamoto has dazzled audiences in concert performances around the globe for the past three decades as a soloist and as a member of the Miró Quartet. Ms. Yamamoto has appeared with orchestras throughout the US and Europe to critical acclaim. With the Miró Quartet, she has performed on the major concert stages of the world, regularly concertizing in North America, South Ameri-ca, Europe and Asia. She was a recipient of the Naumburg Chamber Music and Cleveland Quartet Awards, won First Prize at the Banff International String Quartet Competition and was one of the first chamber musicians to be awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant.

OwenyoUnG Violoncelle T Cello

Diplômé d’une licence et d’un master avec mention de l’université de Yale, Owen a été Violoncelle Principal du Symphonique de Yale et Soliste pour sa tournée européenne en 1986. Il a été membre des Symphoniques de New Haven et de Pittsburgh, puis a rejoint le Symphonique de Boston en 1991. Ses interprétations ont été enregistrées à la Radio Publique Nationale et il a souvent joué en concert avec l’auteur/interprète James Taylor. Il joue un rôle actif dans le projet STEP (un programme d’entrainement et d’éducation pour cordes dédié aux étudiants de couleur).

A Cum Laude graduate of Yale University with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, Owen served as principal cello for the Yale Symphony and was soloist for its 1986 European tour. He was a member of the New Haven and Pittsburgh symphonies until joining the Boston Symphony in 1991. His performances have been broadcast on National Public Radio and he has frequently played in concert with singer/songwriter James Taylor. He is currently active in Project STEP (String Training and Education Program for students of color).
