Dear Reader, Welcome to this new issue of Infosylva. A new BBC video about the African Great Green Wall shows the ambitions of this major long-term multi-stakeholder project to stop desertification all around the Sahara desert. It illustrates the project’s current shift from the original concept of a green barrier against further desertification, into a mosaic of interventions, with different aims, which can stop land degradation. At the same time, these interventions seem to better take into account the social and economic wellbeing of the populations living in the area, which are threatened by climate change and increasing migration. (In English) During the 125th Anniversary Congress of the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO), held in mid-September in Freiburg, Germany, FAO contributed to various sessions and activities. At a major thematic session, FAO Assistant Director-General for Forestry Hiroto Mitsugi highlighted the need for greater awareness of the present contribution and the potential of forests for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), as well as recognizing the work of FAO and partners towards that end. Forestry-based UNECE-FAO Forest Communicators Network (FCN) and the IUFRO Working Party on Communication and Public Relations together highlighted the importance of science-based facts in informing the public about critical issues such as climate change, in order to disseminate sound, verifiable news and fight fake news. (In English) Forests and the SDGs were also at the centre of the debate during the 30th Session of the Latin American and Caribbean Forestry Commission. The 60 or so experts convened at the meeting from all over Latin America also pointed out the need for combined efforts by all concerned governments in the region, in order to better manage forests and reduce deforestation as measures to support food security and the conservation of the environment. (In Spanish: FAO - News) Focusing on another crucial area of the planet, a workshop held in Cairo and organized by the FAO Regional Office for North Africa and the Near East at the end of September discussed FAO support to governments in the region so they may integrate SDGs into their policies. (In French) FAO’s support through research in agricultural and forestry issues in the Republic of the Congo is proving beneficial, both to the livelihoods of its inhabitants and the country’s environment. Projects to boost the production of manioc, one of the most important local staple foods, and to provide people with seeds, both in agriculture and for agroforestry activities, are helping the country’s efforts to diversify its economy. (In French) Finally, two video contests (one for the public and one for those who use professional equipment) have been launched ahead of Mountain Day celebrations on 11 December 2017. The aim of the contests is to make people aware of the current issues concerning mountain people and ecosystems – including increasing migration from mountain areas. Un nuevo video de la BBC sobre la Gran Muralla Verde de África muestra las ambiciones de este importante proyecto a largo plazo, que involucra múltiples partes interesadas con el objetivo de detener la desertificación alrededor del desierto del Sahara. El video ilustra muy bien la transición actual del proyecto desde el concepto original de barrera verde contra la desertificación, al concepto de un mosaico de intervenciones con diferentes objetivos, que puedan detener la degradación de la tierra. Al mismo tiempo, estas

intervenciones tienen en cuenta mejor el bienestar social y económico de las poblaciones que viven en la zona y que son amenazadas por el cambio climático y el aumento de la migración. (En inglés) Durante el Congreso del 125º aniversario de la Unión Internacional de Organizaciones de Investigación Forestal (IUFRO por sus siglas en inglés), celebrado a mediados de septiembre en Friburgo, Alemania, la FAO contribuyó a diversas sesiones y actividades. En una importante sesión temática, el Subdirector General del Departamento Forestal de la FAO Hiroto Mitsugi destacó la necesidad de una mayor conciencia de la contribución actual de los bosques y de su potencial para alcanzar los Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), así como el reconocimiento del trabajo de la FAO y sus socios hacia ese objetivo. Une nouvelle vidéo de la BBC sur l’Initiative de la Grande Muraille Verte en Afrique montre les ambitions de ce grand projet multipartenaire à long terme pour arrêter la désertification dans le désert du Sahara. Il illustre bien la transition du projet actuellement en cours du concept original d'une barrière verte contre la désertification, vers un projet plus complexe qui envisage une mosaïque d'interventions, avec des objectifs différents, pour mieux arrêter la dégradation des terres. Dans le même temps, ces interventions semblent mieux tenir compte du bien-être social et économique des populations vivant dans la région, qui sont menacées par les changements climatiques et sont aussi sujettes à une forte migration. Les projets visant à stimuler la production de manioc, l'un des aliments de base locaux les plus importants, et à fournir aux gens des semences, tant dans l'agriculture que dans les activités agroforestières, contribuent aux efforts du pays pour diversifier son économie. El evento fue presidido por el Secretario Coordinador General del Gobierno de Honduras, quien expresó que el Estado trabaja fuertemente por la protección y conservación de los recursos naturales del país, muy particularmente el bosque.

New FAO publications Social protection for forest-dependent communities Since the implementation of FAO’s five new strategic objectives, social protection has become an important area of focus for the Organization. Over the last biennium (2014-2015), FAO has explored the topic of social protection for forest-dependent communities through a global literature review and three country case studies in Burkina Faso, China and Uganda. This policy brief, developed in collaboration with the United Nations University – Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT), is mainly based on these four studies.

Miscellaneous Call for good and promising practices for Europe and Central Asia region

FAO and the e-agriculture Community of Practice have launched a call for good and promising practices in the use of digital technologies for agriculture in the Europe and Central Asia region. The call aims at collecting lessons learned and recommendations for the use of information and communication technologies – digital technologies – in agriculture initiatives in Europe and Central Asia, and sharing them among members and followers of the e-agriculture Community of Practice and beyond. The good or promising practice you wish to document should be about the use of ICTs for agriculture, livestock, fisheries, forestry or rural development in general, and it can cover a wide range of topics such as the value chain, agrometeorological information, or precision agriculture. -------------------------------------------- Enter the #MountainsMatter video contest - Español - Français - Русский To bring attention to the plight of mountain peoples and ecosystems for International Mountain Day (IMD) on 11 December, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is asking you to make a one-minute video on the theme of ‘Mountains under pressure: climate, hunger, migration’ for the #MountainsMatter video contest. Almost one billion people live in mountain areas and over half the human population depends on mountains for water, food and clean energy. Yet mountains are under threat from climate change, land degradation and natural disasters, which in turn affects mountain peoples, exacerbating hunger and forcing migration. Help tell these stories by entering the #MountainsMatter video contest. Winners will receive a trip to Rome, Italy to see their videos screened at the IMD concert. Individuals 18 or over (see the Terms and Conditions for details) may enter the contest by uploading a video about mountains to YouTube with the hashtag #MountainsMatter and then providing the link to the video through the online submission form. Participants can choose to compete in one of two categories: general or professional: • General: No professional equipment? No worries! Grab your smartphone and record a message about mountains, film yourself explaining how climate change has affected a mountain you know, interview someone from a mountain community in a rural area about the difficulties they encounter, or think of another idea that inspires you around the concept of mountains under pressure. • Professional: This category is open to people who would like to produce entries with professional video and editing equipment. You do not have to be a film-maker to enter, but you may be competing with them! The deadline for entries is 20 October 2017. The two categories will be evaluated separately: • The winner of the general category will be the entry with the most views on YouTube. • The winner of the professional category will be chosen by a panel of judges including professionals working in mountains and communications who will judge the entries according to their relevance to the mountain theme as well as for aesthetic and technical excellence. The number of views on YouTube will not count in the judging of this category. Winners will be notified by 30 October and will be officially announced on 11 December.

Rwanda plans to boost forest cover Rwanda Eye 21/09/17 Rwanda will plant millions of trees in the next three years, as it tries to restore dwindling forest cover to 30 percent by 2020. Portugal's biggest wildfire: 'We all thought we were going to die' The guardian 19/09/17 On 17 June, a fire swept through the forests of central Portugal, killing 64 people and destroying more than 480 houses. After a summer of record numbers of wildfires across southern Europe, the Guardian travelled to devastated villages in Portugal to find out why the June fire was so deadly, and what can be done to prevent it happening again. United Kingdom Red squirrel sees off grey invaders in Aberdeenshire wood The Scotsman 19/09/17 It has been a long struggle by the native red squirrel to see off the invasion of its grey cousins. Now, in woodland near Aberdeen, “team red” appears to have won this fight for survival. Recent results from feeder boxes and camera traps in Countesswells and Foggieton woods have indicated that the smaller red squirrel is dominating these forests once again. Venezuelan vet's fight for the harpy eagle BBC News 24/09/17 One of the world's largest eagles, the harpy is surrounded by legends. It is known by indigenous people in South America as the "god of the wind". They need several square kilometres of undisturbed forest to thrive. They used to be found from southern Mexico all the way to northern Argentina but years of logging, destruction of nesting sites and poaching have had a huge impact on numbers. World Agriculture holds the key to unlocking Africa’s vast economic potential The Guardian 17/09/17 Let’s help farmers better manage their soils and improve yields on existing agricultural land, preventing the need to push into the forests. Let’s create jobs right along the supply chain – from cocoa bean to chocolate bar – and lift thousands out of poverty. Make agriculture about more than just subsisting and surviving. Alarm as study reveals world’s tropical forests are huge carbon emission source The Guardian 28/09/17 The world’s tropical forests are so degraded they have become a source rather than a sink of carbon emissions, according to a new study that highlights the urgent need to protect and restore the Amazon and similar regions. Does forest certification really work? Mongabay.com 21/09/17 Based on a review of 40 studies, we found that certified tropical forests are overall better for the environment than forests managed conventionally. But there wasn't enough evidence to say if certified tropical forests are better than, the same as, or worse than conventionally managed tropical forests when it comes to people. Forests versus hurricanes Forests News 18/09/17 Evidence suggests that by importing atmospheric moisture from the ocean, forests deplete the vapor available to generate and support cyclones. Given their high vapor emissions, it may seem logical that forests themselves should generate and support cyclonic storms. But this does not occur because the severe drag-friction over forests absorbs energy and slows down winds. Is your favourite chocolate fuelling deforestation in West Africa? African Independent 23/09/17 Your afternoon chocolate bar may be fuelling climate change, destroying protected forests and threatening elephants, chimpanzees and hippos in West Africa, research suggests. “Every consumer of chocolate is a part of either the problem or the solution: You can choose to buy ethical chocolate. Or you’re voting with your dollar for deforestation,” said the Director of Mighty Earth campaign. Need for a scientific basis of EU climate policy on forests Euractiv.com 25/09/17 A group of scientists has sent an open letter to EU decision-makers, warning that a planned increase in

harvesting levels of forests for bioenergy use risk having a negative impact on the climate.
