PASTORAL REFLECTIONS T.F. Brosnan

Hypocrisy is an equal opportunity employer. That might be an evident conclusion we could draw from today’s parable about the Pharisee and the tax collector; even though we traditionally favor the tax collector as the humbled supplicant in contrast to the proud, holier-than-thou Pharisee. Truth be told, that for all their faults both men have made the effort to get themselves to the Temple, both place themselves before God, and both engage in prayer no matter how seemingly self-serving those prayers may be. Both Saint Luke and later Christian interpreters of the parable bring a strong bias to the story – a prejudice against those Pharisees. So pervasive was that prejudice over the centuries that the word “Pharisee” has become synonymous with hypocrite. We conveniently forget the fact that Jesus and the Pharisees were closest in belief: both preached a resurrection of the dead, both acknowledged the existence of angels, and both accepted the Prophets, the Writings as well as the Torah as the inspired word of God. Another way to look at the parable might be to hear it as a call to see ourselves as inextricably connected to others; that, for better and sometimes worse, we are all in the same boat, all in it together. One linguistic clue to this interpretation: most translations have Jesus proclaim that the tax collector, rather than the Pharisee, went home justified. But it could just as legitimately be translated that the tax collector went home justified alongside the Pharisee. In other words, both entered the Temple seeing themselves in opposition to the other; but exited the Temple equally loved by God. Another clue to such an interpretation rests on the fact that both men enter the Temple. The Temple – the sacrament of the divine presence, if you will - does not prejudge sinner and saint, but is there for all to approach God. The idea is not so different from the current controversy over who should or should not be allowed to receive the Eucharist. Pope Francis has made this an issue concerning the divorced and remarried who, if their second marriages are presumed invalid, have been prohibited from receiving Communion. The pope suggests that Communion, our encounter with the divine presence - analogous to entering the Temple – should not be a litmus test, emblematic of our standing before God. The pope sees that encounter with God’s mercy as a remedy for healing, not a reward for righteousness. Parables are meant to provoke and surprise. While hypocrisy is certainly a component of the story, it paints both characters with the same brush: the Pharisee is happy to be seen as righteous because of his strict religiosity, and the tax collector humbling himself while in the Temple would later be fattening his pockets unfairly on others’ toil. The issue of hypocrisy is no surprise. But jealousy is. The idea that God could accept the

prayer of the other guy who so obviously (at least to me) doesn’t deserve it, makes me angry and downright jealous. Some years ago, when both my parents were in declining health and needed increasing attention, I had to take on the role of caregiver, medicine-man, and housekeeper. We lived in a neighborhood that had seen a good number of Russian immigrants (refugees of the Soviet Union) move in. Whenever I went to the local drug store there would inevitably be a person speaking with a Russian accent to the pharmacist as he took out a Medicaid card to pay for his medicine. Or, on line in Waldbaums, the Russian immigrant in front of me pay for her groceries with food stamps and then place them in the trunk of her Mercedes. This made me angry at what I perceived to be an unfair system, rigged against the taxpaying middle class native I figured myself to be. I might have been right: the system may well be rigged and unfair. But then again, in the grand scheme of things, what do I know of the drama and hardship that those who had fled the Soviet Union had already endured, or the scars they retain from a life from which that they doubtless needed to escape. The shock of today’s parable is not that we are all hypocrites to one degree or other (that’s a given); the shock is that, whether we like it or not, we’re all in it together. We are our brother’s keeper.

LITURGY OF THE WORD Our next Clow Mass will take place on October

30th, at the 9:30 mass. “Sometimes, moreover, if the place itself and the nature of the community permit, it will be appropriate to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word, including a homily, with the children in a separate, but not too distant room. Then, before the Eucharistic Liturgy begins, the children are led to the place where the adults have meanwhile celebrated their own liturgy of the word.”

What is CLOW? During mass, after the opening prayer, children Pre-K through 6th grade, are invited to go to the church hall to hear the readings of the day proclaimed and explained in age appropriate language. The children rejoin their families during the preparation of the gifts at the offertory. Younger children are often accompanied by their parents. Our CLOW masses have ended for the school year. Watch the bulletin for start up dates in the fall. If you have any questions regarding CLOW, please call Sr. Kathleen Masterson at 718– 224-5695.

CLOW MASS SCHEDULE FOLLOWS: November 20th, December 18th, January 22nd,

February 12th, March 19th, April 9th, May 21st & June 11th.

FAMILY MASS The next Family Mass will be held on

November 6th at 9:30am At the Baptism Ceremony parents are reminded that they are the first teachers of their children, teaching them in all things especially their faith. One of the best ways to do this is to attend Mass together as a family. At Sacred Heart each month we have two special Masses for families. We celebrate Family Mass and Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). At both liturgies the children’s readings are used. Our Parish Children’s Choir, performs at Family Mass. All children are

welcome to join. Choir practice is held on the Thursday before the Family Mass at 3:30pm in the school. Our Family Mass program has ended for the school year, masses will resume in the fall. For information, please call Mrs. Lyons, Director of Religious Education at 718-631-1307.

LAUDATO SI

REACHING OUT

All creatures are connected and all are worthy of love and respect. .

Pope Francis stresses again and again in Laudato Si that our constant push for more and more control over nature has led not only to terrible harm to the natural world but to the dehumanization of us all—those in control lose their humanity spiritually, while many of the people who are controlled lose their homes, their livelihood, their own human dignity. We have the power to reverse this, if we begin to see ourselves as the interconnected creatures we are, learning to cooperate and live together as family. PONDER Can I try today to look closely at someone I might otherwise ignore and to see them as family? PRAY God of creation, help me not to want more and more but to appreciate the many gifts you have already given me. Help me to share these gifts with others.

A special place to grow and learn…

8th grade Spotlight

With the Presidential election just weeks away our 8th grade social studies classes

are creating a mock presidential campaign within our school building.

The two homerooms have taken on the roles of the Clinton and Trump

campaign, complete with a Media team, a debate prep team, speech writing staff

and of course secret service! Our students are learning about the issues of

the campaign, and our candidates are delivering speeches on those issues

throughout the building. The students will create a commercial for each

campaign that will be shown to each grade level and we will hold our own

Presidential Debate in November. On Election Day the 8-2 homeroom will

transform into a polling station where the school population will cast their vote. Since we began this, in 2000, Sacred Heart has successfully predicted the

next President! Stay tuned to see our results….
