Once upon a time…Il était une histoire…

• Digital story-telling is defined as a digital explanation.

• Une histoire-numérique signifie une explanation digitale.

Digital Storytelling• According to the Digital Storytelling

Association (2002), Digital Storytelling is defined as:

“[a] modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Throughout history, storytelling has been used to share knowledge, wisdom, and values. Stories have taken many different forms. Stories have been adapted to each successive medium that has merged, from the circle of the campfire to the silver screen, and now the computer screen.”

An Introduction to Digital Storytelling:

• The following Web site from the Instructional Technology Program at the University of Houston succinctly describes the educational uses of digital storytelling in addition to providing a set of guidelines on how to implement digital storytelling in the classroom.

• Furthermore, there is a fascinating video clip that provides one with an introduction to digital storytelling as an educational tool of the digital era:

How digital story telling might benefit your (current or future) students?

Comment l’histoire numérique peut bénéficier vos (actuels ou futurs) élèves ?

• “One of the true values of digital media in education is its ability to empower teachers and students to develop stories using various forms of self expression” (Shelly et al., 2008, p. 306).

• Digital storytelling is a pedagogical technique of the 21st century that allows students to employ higher-order critical and creative thinking skills.

A 21st Century Educational Tool

• Digital Storytelling promotes:

1) individuality (l’individualité),

2) creativity (la créativité), &

3) fun (l’amusement)

…into the classroom (dans la salle de classe)!

The Benefits of Digital Storytelling

1) provides more variation than traditional methods in current practice

2) personalizes learning experience

3) generates explanation or the practicing of certain topics more compelling

4) creates real life situations in an easy and cheaper way

5) improves the involvement of students in the process of learning

(Gill, 2005 in Sadik, 2008)

The Downsides of Digital Storytelling

• The process of creating a coherent narrative is an intricate and challenging task to undertake.

• Even though creating original work is the heart of digital storytelling, students may heavily rely on replicating models of digital storytelling projects that are presented to them.

• The multimedia technologies utilized in digital stories can be exhaustive which requires a considerable amount of technological support and troubleshooting.

(EDUCASE Learning Initiative, 2007)

Other Downsides of Digital Storytelling

• Teachers may find digital storytelling projects difficult to assess or grade due to the mix of interdisciplinary skills and the use of sophisticated multimedia tools involved in the process of creating digital stories. *Establishing a clear and detailed rubric for a digital storytelling project is highly recommended.

• Intellectual property issues may arise if digital storytelling projects include copyrighted images, music, video, or text.
