    Safety Rules:

    School Bus Stops

School buses are the safest way

    to get to school.

School buses are nearly 8 times

    safer than passenger vehicles.

    But children must take care

    when boarding or leaving the

bus. While an average of 7

    school-age passengers are

    killed in school bus crashes

each year, 19 are killed getting

    on and off the bus.

Most of those killed are children,

five to seven years old. They are

hit in the danger zone around

the bus, either by a passing ve-

hicle or by the school bus itself.

It is illegal for a vehicle to pass a

bus with its red light flashing.

    Young children are most likely

    to be hit because they:

*Hurry to get on or off the bus

*Act before they think and have

    little experience with traffic

    *Assume motorists will see them

and will wait for them to cross

    *Don't always stay

    within the bus

    driver's sight, or ...

    *Drop something

    as they get off the

bus and run intothe path of the

    bus to pick it up

cadets are aged 12 to 20

and wear the blue uniform of

the U.S. Air Force. Most aremotivated by an interest in

the military and a love of

    airplanes. Each is astonish-

    ingly serious about being a

cadet and living up to what

    the uniform represents. Dur-

    ing the 4-day competition,

    theyll compete in a one-mile

    run, test their knowledge of

    aviation through a written

exam and a game like Jeop-

    ardy, stand for an inspection

of their uniforms, and per-form complex military drill

Military drill was not the only

competitive activity at CivilAir Patrols National Cadet

    Competition. In the midst of

    a ham sandwich and rigatoni

    dinner, an arm-wrestling

    match breaks out between

    two teenaged Texas cadets.

At first I think the male is

letting the female win, but it

    quickly becomes obvious

that this struggle is real. Im-

    mediately a dozen cadets

    gather round and begin

    cheering, Hannah! Han-

    nah! A minute later, she

    pins the well-built 17 year

    old. If anyone is wondering

what kind of youth event is

    about to begin, this prelude

    is their warning. These ca-

    dets are fierce.

NCC, as its known to the

    cadets, involves eight drill

    teams and eight color

    guards from around the

country. Each team earnedthe right to compete here in

    McMinnville, Oregon (home

    to Howard Hughes Spruce

    Goose) by winning regional

    Do you guys know Maver?

I ask. Dave Maver was our

national cadet of the year in

2007. Four or five cadetsstart telling me everything

    they know about The Maver,

making him out to be a 5 4

    living legend. He did flutter

    kicks and pushups at the

Dining In at Club Dix, one

    cadet reports. Hes an AP-

    JOC grad hes rappelled

    Australian style, upside

    down. Perseus beheaded

    Medussa. Maver flut-

    terkicked at a dance.

In this group, the center of

attention is a 13 year old girl

    with red hair and braces,

    Sara Peisch. Shes wearing

the insignia of a cadet chief

    master sergeant eight

stripes is a lot for such a

young kid. As the team is

    summoned to the field for

    the Innovative Drill, she says

to me, Sir, stay and watch

    the professional side of us.

found himself soaring over the Eng-

lish countryside strapped to the topof his grandfathers 1942-vintage

    biplane.

What was going through my mind

was why Im doing it, the lad said

in a live interview with his proud

    mum, Zoe, from England.

    OK, Curry said: Why?

But Tiger, who seemed more intimi-

dated by the television camera than he

had been by his historic flight, only

    shrugged.

    Family affair

Fortunately, his mother jumped in to

explain that wing walking is in the fam-

ily blood. Her father, 61-year-old Vic

    World Records, the diminutive dare-

devil donned his flight gear, which

    looked remarkably like his hanging-

    around-the-house clothes: baggy,knee-length pants, sneakers and a

    black T-shirt. His head unencumbered

by a helmet, he wore just a pair of

goggles to protect him from the wind

and whatever bugs might be in his

    flight path.

    Members of Normans wing-walking

team strapped Tiger to a stanchion

fixed to the middle of the upper

    wing of Normans red-and-white

    1942 Boeing Stearman biplane.

It was a perch his mother hadstood in when she was just 18.

My dad took his pilots license on

his 17th birthday, she said. Hes

been flying all his life. He has a

wing-walking team that hes had for

many years. Ive been wing walking

    when I was 18.

    Safety first

Though it looks scary, its actually

quite safe, Zoe Brewer said. Although

its called wing walking, its really wingstanding; once Tiger was strapped in,

he couldnt have walked anywhere if

    he wanted to.
