The islands, which hav e been pivotal to trade and communications around the north Atlantic over thousands of years, are served by frequent air and sea links, making them easily accessible throughout the y ear. A wide range of business, engineering, marine and specialist consultancy services are available locally which meet world- wide standards of quality and experience. The European Marine Energy Centre was set up to provide developers of wave a nd tidal energy devices with a purpose-built performance testing facility. Over £15 million has been invested in providing the world class wave and tidal test facilities. The location around Orkney, has been chosen because of the proximity of an excellent oceanic wave regime, strong tidal currents, grid connection, sheltered harbour facilities and a “centre of excellence” for renewable energy and environmental issues that exists within the local community. EMEC’s combination of world class f acilit ies and excellent location gives developers an ideal grid connected and UKAS accredited sites for the evaluation of w ave and tidal technologies.
