Key to crochet symbols / Beginning loop / Holding the crochet hook 7

Tip: Would-be crocheters witha nickle alergy dont need toworry. Crochet hooks are alsoavailable made in wood orbamboo. These crochet hooksare also easier on your wrist, since they bend slightly andslide well.

Pull the yarn ends to tighten the loop.

Each person who crochets holds the hooka little differently. We recommend tryingvarious positions (such as the two shownhere) to determine which is the mostcomfortable for you.

Holding the crochet hook(right hand, if you are right-handed, andleft hand, if you are left-handed)

    Beginning loop

Lay the yarn in a loop. Run the crochet hookthrough the loop, hook the yarn, and draw itthrough the loop.

Key to symbols in the crochet charts (Key to crochet symbols)

Tip: Crocheting evenly is the secretto attractive crocheted objects.

The oundation chain should notbe worked too loosely or too tigh-tly. I the oundation chain is tootight, it will be difcult to insertthe crochet hook in the stitcheswhen working the next row. I theoundation chain is too loose, thebeginning edge will have holesand loops.

Repeat this movement several times to make a lineof ch. Such a line of ch at the beginning of a projectmay be referred to as the foundation chain. We have written a line of numbers below theillustration of the foundation ch. These show howch are counted. This is important for determiningthe insertion point for the hook in the next row. Forexample the instructions may say to insert the hook

in the 3rd or 4th ch from the hook i.e. not includingthe loop on the hook. Before you count the ch, makesure that the foundation chain is not twisted and thatyou are looking at the front of the foundation chain.Always begin counting at the ch closest to the hook.

Holding the yarn / Chain stitch 9

First make a beginning loop at thebeginning of the yarn. Hold the crochethook with this beginning loop in yourright hand. Spread the ngers of your lefthand slightly apart. Now run the workingyarn (leads from beginning loop to ball ofyarn) behind your little nger and acrossthe front of your ring and middle ngers, and wrap it twice around your pointernger, to regulate the tension. Holdthe yarn end below the beginning loopbetween your thumb and middle nger.

    Chain stitch (ch)

Almost all crochet projects begin with a chainstitch (ch) or with a line of chain stitches(which will show you where this stitch got itsname). The crochet hook is lying in the yarnloop. Wrap the yarn over the hook (or hold

the yarn still and manoeuvre the hook). Thisis called 1 yarn over (1 yo). Now draw theworking yarn through the loop on the hook.

Insert the hook in the next ch, hook theyarn, and draw it through the ch andthe loop on the hook. You have justcrocheted the 2nd slst.

Begin with a foundation chain. If the pat-tern is 10 stitches wide, crochet 10 ch. Thelast ch replaces the rst slst. This means, that you must now work 9 slst. Insert thehook in the 2nd ch from the hook.

Hook the working yarn with thecrochet hook and draw it throughthe ch and the loop on the hook inone smooth motion.

11Yarn (or thread) ring / Slip stitch

Yarn (or thread) ring Slip stitch (slst)

Lay the yarn in a loop and use thecrochet hook to pull the workingyarn through this loop, as describedfor the beginning loop.

Do not pull the yarn to tighten theloop. Leave the loop in a loose ring, make one yarn over (yo) and drawthe working yarn through the loop onthe hook (1). Run the hook throughthe thread ring and pick up anotherloop (you now have 2 loops on thehook). Hook the working yarn anddraw it through both loops on thehook (2). This last stitch is called adouble crochet (dc), see page 12/13.

Work as many dc around the threadring as indicated in the text or inthe crochet chart. Then insert thehook in the rst stitch which wasworked in the ring and draw theworking thread through the rststitch and the loop on the hook inone smooth motion (this is called aslip stitch, see page 11). Now pullthe end of the yarn to pull the ringtightly closed.

    Feste Maschen A

Hook the working yarn again anddraw it through both loops on thehook in a single, smooth motion.

You have just completed one dc.

Continue in this manner, working one dc ineach ch of the foundation until you have rea-ched the end of the foundation chain. Workone ch after the last dc and turn the work.

The ch you just worked replaces therst dc of the next row. Now insert thehook under both top threads of the2nd dc and work the next dc.

    Double crochet 13

Work dc to the end of the row. Thelast dc of the row is worked in the topch at the beginning of the rst row(or, in later rows, in the turning ch ofthe preceding row).

    Double crochet (dc)

Again, begin with a foundation chain. If thepattern is 10 stitches wide, crochet 11 ch.

The last two ch replace the rst dc. Insert thecrochet hook in the 3rd ch from the hook anddraw the working thread through. You nowhave 2 loops on the hook.

    Tip:

    When crocheting a oundation

    chain, leave a relatively long

piece o yarn hanging at the

    beginning. This can then be

used to sew the fnished piece

    together.

    Treble (tr)

Once again, begin with a foundation chain. When you have crocheted enough ch (13 inour illustration), make 1 yarn over (yo) andinsert the crochet hook in the 5th ch fromthe hook.

Draw the working yarn through the ch. Younow have 3 loops on the hook.

Hook the working yarn and draw itthrough the rst two loops on thehook. There are now 2 loops left onthe hook.

Hook the working yarn again anddraw it through the remaining twoloops on the hook.

Continue in this manner, working onetr in each ch of the foundation chainto the end.

After completing the last tr, crochet3 ch to replace the 1st tr of thefollowing row.

Turn the work. For the next tr, insertthe hook under both top threads ofthe next tr of the preceding row.

Continue in this manner until you havereached the end of the row. Work the lasttr in the 3rd of the 3 ch worked at thebeginning of the preceding row.

    Tip:

    Would-be crocheters with a

    nickle alergy dont need to

    worry. Crochet hooks are also

    available made in wood or

    bamboo. These crochet hooks

are also easier on your wrist,

    since they bend slightly and

    slide well.

    19Double treble

    Double treble (dtr)

Hook the working yarn and draw it through the rsttwo loops on the hook. There are now 3 loops lefton the hook.

Hook the working yarn a 2nd time anddraw it through the next two loops.

Then hook the working yarn a 3rd timeand draw it through the last two loopson the hook.

    This completes the 1st dtr.

Continue in this manner, working 1 dtr ineach ch of the foundation chain to the end. After completing the last dtr, crochet 4 ch toreplace the 1st dtr of the following row.

Turn the work. For the next dtr, insert thehook under both top threads of the next dtrof the preceding row.

Continue in this manner until you have rea-ched the end of the row. Work the last dtr inthe 4th of the 4 ch worked at the beginningof the preceding row.

Once again, begin with a foundation chain. Whenyou have crocheted enough ch (14 in our illustration),make 2 yarn overs (double yo) and insert the crochethook in the 6th ch from the hook. Draw the workingyarn through the ch. You now have 4 loops on thehook.

    Tip:

I you fnd that you crochet very

    tightly, only wrap the working

    yarn once around your pointer

    fnger.
